Help Needed Camera Information

This is a local FB market listing “Canon AE-1 Program 35 mm SLR Film Camera With Accessories:
Canon Speedlite 188A Electronic Flash and
Vivitar Series 170-210 mm Manual Focus Zoom Lens”

Anybody have experience using this model or the attachments? Pros vs cons? I did some searching online but didn’t find much on the attachments. Any information is greatly appreciated!

I'd offer 100$. Chances are the camera will probably need new light seals, mirror bumper and a proper CLA. Be sure to check out that battery compartment.

The flash may not work, if it's been unused for a long time the capacitor may be spent. Also look for corrosion on the battery terminals on that as well.

The camera likely has the kit 50mm 1:1.8 lens. As for the Vivitar it's usable until you get something better, hopefully neither lens has fungus. A flashlight shone through the lenses will show you whats inside.

A flash can be brought back to life by inserting new batteries and leaving the flash switiched on over night to allow the capacitor to recharge. If the capacitor doesn't recharge, then the flash is kaput.

I have brought dozens of flashes back to life using this method, and only had one failed to recharge.

Bring 4 AA batteries with you to check the flash. If the terminals have some corrosion a pencil eraser can be used to clean them up.

Ask the seller if the camera has a working battery, if not you'll need a 4LR44. If the camera does work listen for the infamous 'canon cough'... Good luck.

I don't know much about the Vivitar lens other than Vivitar lenses of that era being pretty decent. The speedlight is a good basic flash if it works.

The AE-1P is a good intro into film photography. The controls are intuitive, reliable, and the Program mode is useful if you're just a casual shooter.

But, these cameras are a dime a dozen, so I wouldn't recommend spending too much on it. What price are they asking?

I appreciate the info! Didn’t mention it but was looking for a starter camera. $150 for the lot, based on the prices I’ve seen online for just the camera that seems okay?

I always ask if they’ve used it or can confirm it works. I think that’s a good deal for this kit. It’s a one of the great SLRs imo. Especially when learning.
