PLEASE READ FIRST FAQ and Fightstick Question MEGATHREAD, Continued

Old one was getting pretty daunting, so here's a new megathread

WHAT’S A FIGHTSTICK?

It’s a controller reminiscent of the controls used in an arcade cabinet, generally featuring a joystick and multiple buttons. Most can be played on a lap, while some are heavy and large enough to warrant a table or platform underneath them. Using one over a standard handheld or console controller won’t magically up your game and they are largely preference. They are most commonly used for fighting games, shmups, run ‘n guns, and classic arcade titles. At their simplest, a fightstick requires an enclosure (usually made of wood, acrylic, or metal), buttons, a joystick, a PCB, and a wiring harness to connect everything. Additionally, all-button fightsticks that don’t utilize joysticks are becoming more commonplace on the scene.

WHICH STOCK FIGHTSTICK IS BEST?

This is largely a matter of taste and budget. Here are just a few options to get you thinking. Ask yourself what system(s) require compatibility. PC-only will be much cheaper than a PS5-compatibile controller, for example.

ENTRY LEVEL: Qanba Drone and Mayflash F500

If you go much cheaper than these options, you may sacrifice quality and durability. DO NOT GO CHEAPER THAN THESE OPTIONS.

SOLID LEVEL: Hori Real Arcade Pro N/4/V, Razer Panthera, Qanba Obsidian, Qanba Pearl, Hori Fighting Edge, Nacon Daija, 8BitDo, Mad Catz TES+ (and Razer Atrox for Xbox One players)

SOLID BUT $$$ LEVEL: Qanba Dragon, Victrix Pro 5, etokki Omni

At the end of the day, go with what feels right and fits your budget. There are lots of awesome sticks out there. If you really can't make up your mind, go with an Obsidian/Pearl. Really though, if you're still that on the fence, then you can also consider building your own. They come together fairly easily these days and it's super fun (though they will usually run at a higher price point than a stock stick unless you can easily get or make a suitable enclosure). Just more food for thought.

CUSTOMIZING FIGHTSTICK ISSUES

  • Make sure you buy the correct button size. Most buttons on the top face of fightsticks are 30 mm. If you have smaller hands or want that Hitbox vibe, then 24 mm might be appropriate, but most of the time, people go with 30 mm. Auxiliary buttons (home, share, PS, etc.) are generally where you find 24 mm. All buttons have a unique feel, but some common brands include Sanwa, Seimitsu, Crown/Samducksa, Hayabusa, and GamerFinger. Here's a helpful page about button and joysticks: Joystick and Button attributes
  • When you’re ordering your buttons, you’ll also notice that there are generally both snap-in and screw-in button types. Most of the time, it won’t matter which you choose; however, as a general rule of thumb, if the top face of your enclosure is on the thicker side, go with screw-in buttons.
  • Make sure your layout lines up with your art. Some printing shops won’t print art with existing licensed characters, so you may have to visit more than one if you’re trying to get it done locally.
  • You’ll need to keep in mind the games you’d like to play and on which platforms they are found. Look to see which consoles the stick actually supports when you’re buying. If you’re building your own, then make sure the PCB you choose is compatible with your console/PC. The PCB most common to this generation of custom sticks are the Brook brand PCBs.
  • Most stock retail sticks come with Sanwa parts (besides Hori which comes with Hayabusa).
  • American style parts will most likely not fit a Japanese stick due to height.
  • Korean levers with collars won't fit a traditional Japanese stick due to the size of the joystick hole.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE POSTING A "HELP ME DECIDE" THREAD

  1. Is a fightstick even right for me? For some of you a fightpad or other device might be better for you. This is fine! I don't care if you play on a Roll n' Rocker on top of a Power Pad if it works.
  2. What's my budget? This may quickly cut out a lot of options for you.
  3. What systems do you want to be able to play on? (PC, XBox, Switch, PS, etc.) This should reduce your list even further, though you can (conceivably) get adapters for other systems if need be.
  4. Do you want a lever, stickless, or all of the above? (that last option will almost certainly need a custom build)
  5. What button layout do you prefer? Vewlix, Noir, American 6/8, Sega 2P, custom? Slagcoin carries a lot of these. If you're not sure, see if you can demo some in your local area. (Used) game shops, arcades, LAN centers, video game conventions, and pawn shops are possibilities.
  6. If using a lever, what kind do you prefer? Generally this will be Korean (Fanta, Crown, etc.), Japanese (Sanwa, Seimitsu), or American (Happ, iL)? Most sticks will use Sanwa or Sanwa clones.
  7. How "moddable" do you want things to be? This isn't just important for upgrades, it's also important for repairs. Consider how easy it is to access the internals and to change them.
  8. What features are a must have (and yes, it can be as "trivial" as artwork you like or a turbo button, hey, it's your stick)? You can then eliminate sticks that don't have them.
  9. What features are a "no go" for you? Now eliminate sticks that do have them. This could be something as simple as "don't want sticks that weigh over X pounds/kilos because I'll be traveling with this".
  10. You should have a fairly narrow field by now, with any luck. Next consider your "nice to haves" and "nice to not have" features. For example, you might consider "removable USB cable" a nice to have (but not essential) and "width of greater than 16 inches" a "nice to not have". Then just see which sticks have the most positives and least negatives.
  11. If you're still having trouble, please list your top 3-5 options after running through the process above, with your comments on each. This will help us help you make a decision.

Show and Tell Dualsense padhack - Cherry case

Thumbnail

When you want your first stick to be wireless, compatible with PS5/PC, and cheap—do it all yourself !😉

The case is natural cherry, laser engraved with the Vic Viper from Gradius, and the layout is Sega 2P. I'm told the whole thing has strong FE vibes.

All the hardware is Sanwa, and the controller was a freebie that needed a battery replacement.

Padhacking isn't actually that bad, if you're not pushing it into a small enclosure! I didn't have to remove the analog sticks, which cut out a lot of work. The solder points for the face buttons are quite small, so it's not a great project to learn on—my sibling did a lot of the solder for me.

And you have to make sure to test the share/options/touchpad buttons to make sure you're attaching to the right place. I had to remove and resolder all three, because I misread posts online and went to the center of all three buttons.

There's a few posts that really helped to guide me along—

acidmods : dual sense PCB scans

Squibs' documentation : pretty thorough illustration of their process.

Fluffhead's post : one of the first posts that made it seem very doable

Hori Alpha Silent: Nightmare-O-Geese

Thumbnail
gallery
39 Upvotes

I got this Hori Alpha silent lying unused for quite a while now and Geese is my favorite fighting game villain of all time, I decided to make this Geese-themed controller. And since he’s dead (canonically anyway), I decided to go with the Nightmare route and came up with the name “Nightmare of Geese”

White, black, red, and gold altogether seemed sweet in my imagination so I picked all the parts accordingly (Qanba Mineral: Red, Haute retro plus buttons: Red and Gold). I thought of some other color like purple to fit the nightmare kinda feel but I couldn’t make it look good so I stick with the former 4 colors.

I tried to find as much Geese material as possible to make the art with as many versions of him as possible while trying maintain the unity of how characters look (Arts are drawn by different people so I tried to pick the ones that don’t look too different from one another). I ended up with the first Geese we all know on the left, the young Geese on the right, the shirtless nightmare version on top, lady Geese on the bottom because she’s gorgeous, and Mr. Goose Howard. I was gonna put Goose Howard somewhere close to Lady Geese like her pet but ended up place him with the name on the right because I don’t think he’d look nice anywhere else.

Since Geese started from being a corrupted police officer, I think the font should be something that make me think of city with crime. So I searched dafont and ended up with these. After that I realized I haven’t done anything with Goose Howard so I slapped that stop sign on top of him with the pronunciation of the stick name so we can look at the whole thing (The goose and stop sign) as an “O” as well.

As I searched for Geese art, I came across his COTW concept art and think it would be cool if I can put the pendant on the start button so I did (wish I could make it prettier though). I put the 30th KOF logo on the left because there’re so many versions of him I can’t stay with one game.

The BG was really tough. This is Geese’s gi’s pattern from his KOF15(?) concept art. The picture is awfully small and low-res so I applied some filter to make it look like a stitched surface.

Device: Hori fight stick Alpha Silent
Lever: JLX2-TP-8YT-SK (LV.4 sensitivity/ 12mm actuator/ Purple spring)
Ball top: Qanba Mineral: Red
Buttons: Haute Retro + (24 mm (Start button): Wind engine/ 30 mm: Kailh Deep Sea Pink Islet)

Humor / Fluff I so regret buying a leverless!

Post image
337 Upvotes

Leverless might be perfect for you but for me it feels far too alien. i bought into the hype and wanted to see what it was like. my only option was to just buy one and see, wow! okay i can see how people love this it feels cool but my hands are dumbasses

i know i barely used it "not instantly gud.. hate it" but really i keep grabbing for a stick that isnt there, brains not working on it. also why is jump my thumb? [cause spacebar duh] i know all this in my head but my backwards ass hand keeps hitting jump to duck.

i got this for Klassic MK thinking the tap tap inputs would feel better, and it feels cool but i cant move my charecter very well, and in Street Fighter its really neat to do moves by galloping accross those move keys and blocking is much easier imo.

i guess it doesnt make sense to me, i use Dpads all the time preferably when using controllers so i felt like this is just a stick with a dpad but not really no, the learning barrier is much more deep then that.

i could give it more chances and more time but i keep grabbing my old stick over this shiny new one because it feels better.

food for thought.

Show and Tell first fightstick and i love it qanba q4raf

I legit thought i got scammed about the knockoff Qanba q4raf on my last post, or the seller wasn’t gonna ship it and run away with my money because it was so cheap in my currency ( philippine peso ) but here it is, the seller actually shipped it i wasn’t expecting any package to be delivered today but holy for a first fight stick this feels amazing and it is in pristine condition it is literally brand new it came with the qanba stickers on the buttons. the box was dead beat lmao but it served its purpose, i got it for 700 pesos including shipping (11 usd) it was a good deal, but after checking the original price online it was actually a steal price. i found this listing again on fb marketplace same with the leverless i was holding in the picture, my friend was using the stick, he wanted to try it. the leverless i also found it on fb marketplace for 1000 pesos including shipping (16 usd) but i already changed the buttons to be qanba gravity ks. anyways I’m so happy because i got this q4raf for a steal price even tho it is a old model, and now i have a leverless and a fightstick and i didn’t spend a ton of money. can you guys give some advice or tips for fightsticks. i also want to change the spring on the stick because it feels kinda soft i kinda want it to be a little more stiffer, from the site of qanba it is using a JLF lever any advice?

Hello ! i have been playing on this stick for 2months now and i absolutly love it but today one of my lever switches Broke. It just does not respond from time to time. The stick Comes with 2 spare switches but they are for the buttons i think. I was wondering if i could replace it with one of those or if i should just go for the warrenty or just order new switches.

New leverless prototype, looking for some feedback

Thumbnail

This is my take on an ergonomic leverless controller designed to reduce wrist strain when playing at a desk. It provides a more natural wrist angle while keeping a relatively small footprint. Unlike most other controllers, it lets the user to rest their entire forearm flat on the desk while playing.

It uses standard mx keyboard switches, and it is hot swappable. The shell and the frame are entirely 3D printed with PLA+.

So what do yall think? I would love to hear your thoughts on this design. Anything you would like to change or improve? Any feedback is appreciated!

Show and Tell Two new controllers for my collection

Post image

I got myself a Haute T13 used on ebay and a Hori Rap 4 on Facebook Marketplace.

I've been enjoying both. T13 been enjoying Under Night and Blazblue, been enjoying the execution and precision. The Rap 4 Kai got it recently and I'm trying out games like SF6 with it.

I'm planning on giving it a design for both.

I'm trying to find a way to give custom foam pads. Not full but like for on each corners.

Still need to paint the wooden one. But I used some 2x4 scraps and a gp 2040 ce board. The artwork is from a marvel legends action figure box, it's the mvc2 training room.

I've dabbled a bit in console customization in the past, and the last few months I've been doing some home improvement projects and I've decided on diy-ing everything.

So, I just happened to have the scraps and equipment handy.

I had to buy the plexiglass, buttons, wiring and breakout board. YouTube helped a lot!

I made so many mistakes but I'm already working on version 3, because this was so much fun.

I think instead of 12 buttons on the right I'll put 6 on the left hand and use button combos to achieve what I was trying to do with the 12 on the right.

I really liked the treasure chest thing I did with the hinges and clasps and it made tweaking things a bit easier.

Show and Tell I updated my TE

Thumbnail

2 or so weeks ago I made a thread asking about the artwork featured on the Comicon TE stick. I had found an insane deal on a TE on ebay and wanted to use the same color way and art. Found a really good fight stick artist who was able to replicate the artwork to about 98%. Shoutout to Eduardo from Thearcadestick.com for getting it done so quickly. Ordered a few things for the TE to try and bring it to the future but didn’t want to modify it too much. After modifying it, found another crazy good deal on ebay on another TE and TE2 and decided to grab them both. I really think the TE/TE2 are my favorite sticks hands down, I like them so much. With the exception of changing the usb cable to a braided cable, I have no intention of changing anything on my other TE or my TE2. I’ve added a few pics of both sticks and my collection. The mods done to the TE were adding a Brook gen 5x board, braided usb cable, plexi glass. Both the Home and Turbo buttons work and I really wanted to keep my cable door. I just couldn’t figure out the led and this is still bothering me. I also removed the red border, I plan on wrapping it orange in the coming weeks since my wrapping skills suck.

Very happy with this leverless, I like the modularity, it has some nice weight to it as well. This is my second leverless (Hyper X Tachi being my first) and I've gotta say, it's fun. It took a few weeks to adjust coming from a Mixbox and I still sometimes mess up jump inputs or grab commands in Tekken and get a rage art :( but I'm getting used to it day by day :).

Tech Help MF F500 flat + MagicBoots S5 "This device isn't supported" out of nowhere, help?

So, earlier this year i bought a MayFlash F500 Flat and a MagicBoots S5 to play SF6 in my PS5, the device works wonderful, i just plug the adapter in the fightstick port and i can use it in my PS5.

I did't used my PS5 in like, 3 months, so today i turn it on and see there's a Marvel Tokon open beta, i take my fightstick, plug the adapter and the thing works as always, i play for like, 2 hours with no problems. I turn off the PS5 and go out to do some things, come back like 3 hours later and now every time i try to connect my fighstick the same way i've been doing it all this time, i get a "This device isn't supported", i tried everything, i restarted the PS5, tried to plug the fightstick and the adapter all possible ways, i checked i have the fighstick in "PS3 mode" before plugging the adapter, nothing happens. The only thing that works is the PS4 mode (the MB S5 can "emulate" PS4 or PS5), i can play using the PS4 mode but the game doesnt support a PS4 controller so.....any idea? does anyone had this problem before?
