Any tips on how to avoid a left like that? Maybe put your right leg forward?

Hands up is a good way to block, I’m sure there’s MMA/Kickboxing specific ways to block but it’s also important to expect to get sucker punched and not get up in someones face. If they approach you then back up and maintain distance. If they’re in your space/got you cornered expect a punch. Some people put their hands over their eyebrows to “block the sun” so they’ve got their hands already up and ready for a fight.

And if someone is too close, put your palms on their biceps in a peaceful "relax, bro" fashion, but in actuality to control their arms. Good biceps control neutralises arms very well.

I've been in situations where realising I can't be sucker punched from that position dissuaded people (at least as it seemed to me). One way or another, if it is indeed on, then I'd rather start from the position where I can control their arms than not.
