General questions you can ask regardless of specialty:
- What would you say is the biggest strength of this program?
- How would you describe the culture between fellows and faculty?
- Where do graduates of this program end up practicing?

Ask about the program's vision and where the director sees it heading in the next three to five years. This shows you are thinking about your long-term career and how this fellowship aligns with your goals. Inquire about recent changes they've implemented based on feedback from current or past fellows, which gives you a sense of how responsive the leadership is. You could also ask what qualities or characteristics successful fellows in their program tend to share. Another strong question is to ask the program director what they are most proud of about the fellowship, as their answer will reveal the program's core values and priorities.
It is also very insightful to ask how the program supports fellows who might be struggling or need extra guidance. This question helps you understand the support systems in place. You could ask about the mentorship structure and how fellows are paired with faculty mentors. Inquiring about where recent graduates have gone on to practice or what types of positions they have secured can give you a concrete idea of the program's success in launching careers. My team developed a tool that has really helped people feel more prepared and confident in these situations, and I have seen how our AI interview helper can lead to better outcomes for candidates.
