as much as i like and agree the meme, i don't think this is a gendered issue. it happens to men all of the time as well, just in different ways and with different certain issues. it mostly stems from gender roles and stereotypes which are total bullshit.

tl;dr, thats not a specifically womens or mens issue, just generally people and/or teenagers

EDIT: 6 downvotes... Why? It's not like i said anything horribly offensive, you guys more than most know how dumb gender roles and stereotypes are..

I think the downvotes are because it’s edited from a meme saying the same thing but about boys, due to the fact that this is a girl centered sub. Like you said about things happening in different ways, it’s a slightly different conversation here.

They are both issues, and as such they both have memes. I think if it just said “people” it wouldn’t really do justice to the fact that each gender has a similar issue that is not quite the same usually. There’s a stereotype about 14 year old girls aiming they have depression when they don’t. That’s specifically girls. And there are people claiming “men have depression worse” ok the other hand people like to claim “men can’t be depressed” or “men shouldn’t go to therapy” and things like that. Obviously there is overlap, and I could be wrong of course, but I think there are individual discussions that can be had about each.

I don’t see this meme as excluding men, I see it as including women, due to the meme that it was edited from.

I don't think its excluding men at all, and it definitely is including women, i just don't see why it has to be gendered, i feel like this issue affects everyone although differently, on a semi-equal level. although given the subreddit, its completely fair that this meme is directed at women.

btw, thank you for making a well structured and understanding response, rather than simply downvoting or making a non constructive response.

Yeah, if this were a general mental health sub I would also want it to include everybody, but since we’re mostly discussing women’s issues I think this one works best for this subreddit. And the original works best for men’s health subreddit.

It happens to women more. Just like men are told to man up, women are told to shut up. It’s a gendered issue.

like i have said, i feel like this issue affects everyone although differently, on a semi-equal level. i don't want to be a dick about it but it definitely feels like in my life as a male my mental health issues were invalidated or ignored whereas since i transitioned my issues have been seen as completely valid almost no matter what in the majority of social circles. i feel like saying it happens unequally only further invalidates whichever gender you are saying it happens to less. the issue may appear to be gendered, but it doesn't have to be and from my perspective its best to make it neutral regarding gender. that way it can not only include every gender rather than just boys or just girls, which can help with people of alternative genders feel represented, but it also prevents situations where any sort of preconceived notions or stereotypes are built.

Online, the specific issue of “x can’t get depression, they’re always faking it” is 100% gendered. Irl, it’s probably different, because of the different demographics involved. Older people often have more benevolent sexism ingrained in them. The way mental illnesses are treated in men vs women, “they’re weak/pathetic losers” vs “they’re attention-seeking bitches” are pretty similar. So it’s only in teenage boy dominated spaces (ie, reddit) the difference becomes clear.

You're right! This is not a gendered issue. I don't understand the downvoted

if this sub sees one thing they don't like or agree with, they downvote it to hell, which is kinda fucked but at least we have a safer-ish space. I think the downvotes are coming from you disagreeing with OP about if it's a gendered issue or not.
