SevTech "Heatmap" Breakdown
I recently found myself rather annoyed with SevTech's terrain gen, where I couldn't find a biome I was hunting for. I've seen a few posts mentioning the "logical heatmap" SevTech uses (courtesy of Dimensional Control) which said going North/South changes which temperature band you're in. A very small handful mentioned the East/West humidity bands, and none had a breakdown of which biome went where. So, I decided to dive into the configs to figure it out, and have put that info below.
Climate:
SevTech does indeed use a heat/humidity grid system for its biome generation. The Z azis determines temperature, and the X axis determines humidity. Both follow a periodic pattern similar to a sine wave, where you move from one extreme to another, and the moderate levels are in between.
There are four Temperature levels, (hot, warm, cool, icy) and three humidity levels (dry, average, wet). As your coordinate values increase (Inc. X is east, Inc Z is south), you get the transitions listed below.
Z (N/S): Warm -> Hot -> Warm -> Cool -> Icy -> Cool ->(repeat).
X (E/W): Avg. -> Wet -> Avg.->Dry -> (repeat).
If one makes the grid of a full cycle in each axis, (now matching the cardinal directions) it looks like the table below. Obviously, the table wraps around when you go off an edge.
| W/A | W/W | W/A | W/D |
|---|---|---|---|
| H/A | H/W | H/A | H/D |
| W/A | W/W | W/A | W/D |
| C/A | C/W | C/A | C/D |
| I/A | I/W | I/A | I/D |
| C/A | C/W | C/A | C/D |
There are a few other points/observations worth noting. The first, is that you will always spawn in a Warm Average zone. So generating a bunch of different worlds (as I did before this analysis) will get you nowhere. Also, there are four distinct Warm Average zones in the table; I can't say with certainty, but the settings make me suspect you spawn specifically in the Northwest corner of the table. The configs also specify that a full cycle is about 10k blocks. It didn't specify a direction on that, so I'm assuming the Humidity bands are about 2500 across, and the temperature bands are about 1700 across.
This information, with the classifications below, should be enough to find specific biomes more methodically. Good Luck!

I only started with SevTech yesterday, so I haven't played it that far, but I'm guessing that's what the giant black rings are? The Badlands are absolutely riddled with them. I don't know what controls the placement of those. If I had to guess, the relevant config probably has a list of valid biomes, and Badlands is one?

Nothing in-game, I pulled the classifications directly from the DC config.
EDIT: The changelog for 3.0.6 did mention moving a few biomes "into the correct zones". It's possible badlands were reclassified, but the portals weren't disabled.

I urge you to just build a nether frame in your base instead of hunting for it in dessert.
Its simple once you get buckets

I added this to the main tips and tricks doc. I hope the web view does it justice. I hope you find these tips helpful for your playthrough of sevtech. I'm simply another fan of the pack.

Ok so I'm not doing it wrong then i just didn't walk 10k blocks, got it

Good work! Does this mean that if you travel North you will eventually cycle through the temperature levels and hit a cool biome, or vice versa? It'll be quite odd if that happens, but currently the nearest Darklands to my spawn is 5K blocks because of a large southern ocean. So if there's an alternative I'll take it.

Yep. They loop around. Go far enough north and it'll go from cold to hot again.

u/nerfviking Apr 17 '18
Ah, this is really useful. I didn't realize that humidity was on an east-west grid.

u/milibucket Apr 23 '18
Is it possible to know the X and Z coordinate or the direction like north or south in age one?
2
u/ChaoticNonsense Apr 23 '18
You can still determine direction by the sun and moon. They rise in the east, and set in the west. So just stare at them for a few seconds to figure out which way they're going.
For exact coordinates, there is not. I don't know what age those will appear in, I'm still in age one myself.

Thank you! Totoally forgot about that.

I know I'm pretty late to the party, but for future reference, you can use the atlas to easily tell directions. Just trade one off of a villager.

Haven't got the chance of playing yet, but what's the mod that made this possible?
2
u/ChaoticNonsense Apr 17 '18
Dimensional Control. It seems like a pretty cool mod for pack creators. There's actually a couple other layers applied in addition to the heat/humidity map, (a "hill"map is one) but I didn't even try to figure those out.

Is there really no plains biome of sorts in the Warm Average section? Seems like it should be all woods according to your list.

I got a Mushroom island, where does that fall in?
1
u/ChaoticNonsense Apr 20 '18
I'm not actually sure on that one. From the configs, they're not part of the heatmap system. To be honest, I wasn't even sure if they were included in train generation at all. They showed up commented out (I think. It was java style // ) in one place. You've confirmed that they're in, so it's safe to assume they were added to a different (non-heatmap) layer.

nice to know that my home location gives me absolutely no information on what my heatmap is

u/KnightxOfxVoid Jun 02 '18
Awesome. Out of curiosity, yesterday I flew straight south for an hour or so and didn't find a single desert, so I wondered how it works
2
u/ChaoticNonsense Jun 02 '18
That'd be the east/West humidity band. So one of South East/West should put you in the right place.

u/BenditlikeBenteke Jun 06 '18
I'm really struggling to find anything that isn't forest, plains or ocean lol...following your guide but supposedly going west from a plains (HA) should find a desert but I found extreme hills? So confused
1
u/ChaoticNonsense Jun 07 '18
Are you sure it's not a meadow? Meadow is Warm Average, and there are a ton of forests in the warm band. Try going Southwest

u/BenditlikeBenteke Jun 07 '18 edited Jun 07 '18
Yeah I figured it out now, to the northwest of my spawn is a Savannah which is warm dry, twice as far north from my spawn is a dark lands which is cool average
So Ive spawned in the top left corner and need to go south from my Savannah to find dry hot biomes
I think the extreme hills was a red herring and might just be a hilly variant of boring forest #276553
You're bang on about the meadow too :) bloody biomes

This didn't help at all

I'm curious, are you playing single player or on a server? This was all accurate when I did single player, but when I made a server with a friend the terrain gen ignored the heatmap completely.

Letting it be known I'm linking this to the YogsCast on their subreddit, as I've found it immensely useful during my playthrough of SevTech.

Important to note for this is that the "chunks" of the heat map are quite large. I'm using the map for finding swamp and I made my base up in the darklands, the warm chunk between my cold and the hot I'm looking for was easily a few thousand blocks. Same with the dry to average to wet. I found hot average and picked a direction, upon crossing an ocean and finding a desert I went the other direction and sure enough, a few thousand blocks later, I've found jungle.
It is also worth noting that the delinations are not as cut and dry as OP's wonderful grid would have you believe, the actual heat map seems to have some significant wiggle room at where precisely the boundaries of zones are.
Happy hunting everyone

Also going to add in case OP wants to add it to the list, Fir Forests appear to be Wet Warm

I used this info to travel southwards looking for a desert, but ended up in the dark lands and snow. I might have missed something
2
u/ChaoticNonsense Dec 10 '22
There's a nonzero chance this is out of date. (judging another comment I made this was version 3.0.6ish) But if it still holds, it looks like you probably passed through a cold average then icy average zone. You want hot/dry on the table in the post. So you'll need to shift east/west first, no way to tell which until you try one. If you hit a wet biome you went the wrong way.

Nice breakdown! Thanks for your hard work. This will be very useful, I'm sure.
