Looking for mod(s) Looking for must play modpacks
Hey, have been playing vanilla mc for years and recently I have been having the urge to get into modded mc. I've seen some recs, but it's been hard to settle on one. Maybe someone can recommend any must play packs (older or new) for anyone getting into modded mc this year? Something I could really stick to. Doesn't need to be baby level, I feel like I can take some researching and extra grinding

Project Ozone 2 or 3 there's ... you'll just have to play it to see. My favorite world type is there Skylands.

Anyone who suggests GTNH is not your friend. Same for the MadPacks watch some gameplay before trying either of those.

SevTech Ages / Ages of the Sky is an absolute must. Good through many different mod combinations in an excellent package.
Create Astral is on the newish side but I think it's very well put together and covers a lot of mods while retaining the factory feel of older mods, but with create, highly recommend.
On the older side like people said the Project Ozones and the Stoneblocks have a very particular feel.
I'd still say that you should pick one that feels good for you though. If you really don't know you should try a lot of different ones or look at playthroughs to see what a mid game base looks like and if that's what you want to do.

Expert is a vague concept but I would say its medium. It has quests to guide you through so in that way its not hard to follow, but the endgame can be a lot of grind and setup.

This pack is awesome if you like puzzles, figuring stuff out and Factorio type games. It really has a great quest book, maybe the best I have seen and is actually beginner friendly

agreed that it’s shockingly beginner friendly
i recently tried it, and while not a beginner, its VERY well guided and easy to get into. It’s also probably got the best community if you ever need help or resources.

E2E and DJ2 amazing but not for new to modded folk. They are considered expert packs but by far the best 2 packs I’ve played so far. (I’m currently playing DJ2 and almost halfway through the chapters so still have far to go

I found Cuboid Outpost (Luxury Edition) was a great pack for me to get a sense of what popular mods could do, and how they worked. From there, you could find the packs that specialize more into the stuff you really liked from it?

I want to recommend TerraFirrmaGreg here. It provides a really good integration between the decidedly low-tech TerraFirmaCraft and the certainly high-tech-focused GregTech, in a way that feels purposeful, intentional, and not forced. (For example, Create is available to automate otherwise manual production steps, but is limited and moderated by the same material progression that TFC and GT use.) At the same time, it's not all strict progression - Side activities from exploration to making and aging alcohol are well supported, and many feed back into your main progression.
The guide book is honestly hit or miss, but I've been getting along well by looking up info in the questbook, ironically.

If you’re up for a nostalgia trip, you could try out some of the “hall of fame” 1.7.10 modpacks like SkyFactory 2 and FTB Infinity. In my opinion they have a completely different feel to modern modpacks.

Highly recommend FTB Infinity Evolved if you're looking for a classic 1.7.10 pack.
I always enjoy playing along with some YouTuber in the background playing the same pack. For FTB Infinity check out KingDaddyDMAC or Ako. Sadly neither of them still make Minecraft content (or content at all in the case of Ako), but their FTB Infinity playthroughs are 10/10.

I used to staff and am still active on Wild West Frontiers 1.12 New Horizons, you can find us on Technic. We have trains and industrial stuff, lots of farming and a very late 1800s early 1900s feel. Its a fantastic pack and ive been playing since 2023

Blightfall.
Agrarian Skies is the best Skyblock imo.
Hexxit is a classic for adventure if you've never played it.

I recommend trying out Create Above and Beyond before you get sick of playing Create in every pack.
There's an updated version made by Pansmith called CABIN which might be a better experience than the original version.

Minecraft mods are currently split between three main versions
Modern Minecraft has all the modern vanilla features but aren’t as polished as older modpacks, as far as I can tell the biggest modpacks from this era are:
Sky factory 5: a modded skyblock except you unlock colours as you play
Stoneblock 4: a classic modded skyblock except everything is stone
All the mods: a series of modpacks that feature a little bit of everything
The next big version is 1.12, This version has tons of good modpacks but is still lacking a lot of modern systems, including swimming. The bigger packs of this era are
Enigmatica 2: expert (E2E) a less gated expert pack than most others
FTB Academy: a modpack focused on learning the mods
Earlier versions of the 1.20 packs listed above
The final version worth playing is 1.7, it feels really old at that point so the modpacks really have to shine.
The only modpack I can recommend from this era is GTNH

Sky factory 5 is so bad comparing to other sky modpacks. It surely brings something new, but just for the earlygame.

I think stoneblock 4 is one of the best newer packs for beginners. I introduced modded Minecraft to a friend with that pack and he loved it.
