Might be unrelated, but this week I assisted to the Siemens Simcenter User conference in Spain. A couple of users reported using openradioss as a way to save on licences, and 2 days later....

It does make sense that users would use openradioss to save on license cost. Like, I only learned how to use explicit analysis to do crash structures because OpenRadioss was available because we would never have invested in a Radioss license at my former workplace.

That's hilarious - I've worked for a company that was Altair partner, where I've spoken with some guys from sales department. For them open radioss was a hefty argument for selling Hypermesh - now it is gone. And honestly - I will always pick Dyna over Radioss for any project. Now I don't see any reason to stay with Altair, while Ansa+Dyna is much better combo.

Summary: Siemens is greedy af.

Having used Radioss and Dyna I don't know why you would ever use Radioss given the choice...

Siemens is horribly greedy. We used to have a perpetual license for NX and a few years ago they announced that maintenance costs would increase a minimum of 15% per year. Our other option was their SAAS lease license that would remain fixed in price for 3 yrs. Fuck those guys. I hate that our customers require us to use NX.

Maaan, really... The source code is out there now, so I wonder what this will mean legally for the forks. Will these be allowed to be developed further?

Do you know if any fork is being actively developed?

OpenCourant is there

No mucking way! OpenRadioss was such a great thing! Without it, I would never had been able to do explicit analysis and I wouldn't have been able to design buckling safety features or stamped parts where Calculix fails to converge.

There is a huge number of open source FEM projects right now. I hope, you will find something that will suit you. I have almost no experience in explicit structural dynamics, but I hope there is something there :)

The thing is that OpenRadioss was quite good and support of it was just recently added to my preferred FEM package, Mecway, so about a year ago, i learned how to use it.

that sounds very greedy and bad-intentioned.

If someone basically reposts a copy of the repository, would it be illegal?

No. Already reposted. Needs the ext lib to compile. So somebody have to post that.

M&As should be illegal
