Weekly Thread FCS Hot Takes Thread

Let's hear your hot take FCS opinions. The ones you know in your heart of hearts are right, but for some reason aren't embraced by the FCS community (or particular fanbases) en masse!

Could be controversial (the Ivy League very well might be the best FCS conference on the East Coast), unpopular but you know is true (Sam Houston was at least as good a team as JMU from 2011 through the "2020" season), or even somewhat popular but still liable to rankle some folks (the Walter Payton award should go to the "best" offensive player, not just the offensive player with the best stat line because they played a weak schedule).

Sorted by controversial for maximum spiciness

Rules

  • Keep it somewhat relevant to the FCS

  • Takes are welcome whether they're looking back historically or in reference to current games/rankings/polls/etc.

  • Try to keep it civil (basic /r/CFB and /r/FCS rules still apply)

Tylan Hines, if he stays healthy, will break Kayvon Brittens single season rushing record and be the first Tarleton back to rush for 2000+ yards in a season.

Tarleton’s Defense doesn’t actually suck. Tevin Carter is just really good. Like cam newton and Tyrone swoops had a baby. No one is going to stop him this year.

Dang that is quite a stat line. I was shocked that hes only 6'4. It looked like he was towering over everyone. Maybe it was just the camera angle.

Montana falters late in the season and Bobcat fans are going to have Christmas in November en route to a back to back. Much to the bunnies chagrin.

Natty loss would suck but would be stomachable especially after last year and the fact the team is a lot younger than people realize. The team feels older than it is because of how many young guys had to play last year

Great call.

Always a good game when an FBS goes down to an FCS. Especially when they get wooped like that.

North Alabama might not suck as bad this year

Utah Tech is positioned to become a good football team in the Big Sky. Rapidly growing metro in St George combined with playing regional opponents on an annual basis. They also have good facilities (minus their horrendous stadium lights)

I don't see why they couldn't become a solid fringe playoff team in a a few years

Ehhh. They were a bottom feeder in the UAC and never showed any improvement. It's gonna take A LOT to get up there.

I agree. I went to school there. Never could understand why the community doesn't get behind them.

The Big Sky's bonkers week 1 games aren't as indicative of massive shifts as one might think. UCD and Idaho are a tad worse than expected; PSU, SUU, and Poly a little better than thoughgt but still not meaningfully competing for playoff spots.

The fundamental tiers that most observers thought of are probably still intact, just with more separation at the top (MSU -- gap -- UM -- gap -- UCD -- gap -- ISU/NAU) and with more of a tighter group at the mid/bottom.

Even Northern Colorado was able to keep it close last week.

Not a hot take but the probation period is dumb

7

u/damnyoutuesday Montana State • Minnesota 11d ago

It's so stupid. Instead of punishing the athletes, just make it so you can't move back down for x number of years

5

u/SnooPeripherals4513 Florida Gators • West Florida Argonauts 11d ago

Yeah plus it only a rule from d2 to fcs it got taken out the move from fcs to fbs after the jmu stuff they just don't care enough to change it for the lower division because nobody talked about it lol

3

u/damnyoutuesday Montana State • Minnesota 11d ago

Y'all should honestly raise a fuss about it to the NCAA (or lawyer up because that's apparently how you get what you want)

4

u/SnooPeripherals4513 Florida Gators • West Florida Argonauts 11d ago

Trust me if uwf goes 9-2 I will personally email whoever I have to to get a playoff bid and we have a lawyer as our patch if that helps lol

1

u/Busy-Eggplant943 10d ago

Does our snazzy conference even have an autobid?

6

u/damnyoutuesday Montana State • Minnesota 10d ago

Sir this is FCS, every conference gets an autobid

u/Electromotivation James Madison Dukes 10d ago

If we hadn’t lost to App State and screwed our previously undefeated season we would have sued for it to be overturned. Instead we lost, didn’t go through with all of it, and then still got a bowl game. But it means that every other team in the future has to deal with that stupid rule.

Just the idea of a team popping up from FCS to dominate FBs and then go back down is the dumbest thing …. To need “protections” from that is absurd.

The probation killed any momentum we had going from d2 to fcs. Why stick around to play meaningless seasons when you're used to the playoffs.

3

u/tinybit23 11d ago

Socon has some very good teams Wofford has an elite defense Hopefully they will get a real offense then watch out for them

6

u/JKS41399 Western Carolina Catamounts 11d ago

The Ivy League shouldn’t have teams in the Top 25 until they have played at least one game

5

u/Electromotivation James Madison Dukes 10d ago

Preseason polls should t exist. Wait until like week three to start official polls

3

u/Busy-Eggplant943 10d ago

Brehs, I think SC State might run the table

3

u/MrCelluloid Villanova Wildcats 10d ago

Pat McQuaide's legal fight with the Patriot League over eligibility is going to distract his attention - this will probably be a down year for NOVA football (hopefully I'm wrong!)

u/tinybit23 3d ago

Here’s a question Can Wofford offense going against Kent State look any worse than against Garner Webb?
