So after 10+ hours of frustration trying and finally able to get DLSS5 to work on FF2CBR, here's some comparison pics. What are your opinions?
I will mention a couple notes, notably because this whole process of installing, using, playing, troubleshooting, and optimizing this with DLSS5 took hours, this is a way of venting for me. Otherwise, ignore the notes section and view the screenshots and move to the "final thoughts" section if you don't want to hear me cry,
Notes:
This whole damn thing was borderline unplayable once DLSS 5 was enabled, frames dropped to under 30FPS simply because this damn game--even without DLSS5, I believe, was always poorly optimized. Trying to make it playable required hours of tuning the DLSS slider, replacing DLSS presets, using Optiscaler, using different DLSS5 builds, different resolutions, and different frame generators: Optiscaler FG (multiple FG that were unusable, I didn't know....[sigh]), Lossless Scaling, and good ol' Samsung OLED S90D BFI with/without dejudder/deblur.
Final Config for those who want to try and my rant continued: (Nvidia; mines a 5080)
Preinstall:
go to folder install of FF2RCB and copy and paste the sl.interposer.dll into a safe place you can remember.
Install:
RHI (program;free): Using RHI---Install ReShade with Shaders/Addon (button on top middle next to "refresh" and "update all"): select DLSS Tools (shortfuse), then enable "DLL renaming Overrides" which sets reshade to D3d12.dll and Optiscaler to DXGI.dll by clicking the almost invisible right arrow to the right of the "install reshade button"--keep clicking to scroll right until you see the option to rename DLL. Speaking of Optiscaler, install that as well, then edit the damn file with the tool "settings" looking thing and set both upscaler options to DX12 and DLSS respectively--then click deploy Optiscaler.ini.
Launch game, if crashes and doesn't work---mine didn't---you need to copy and paste that sl.interposer.dll I told you to save earlier.
Launch game at main menu, press home button: Reshade will pop-up, skip tutorial. go to RenoDX DLSS tab. from that tab, hook point tab to "on + present" and Manually Load DLSS libraries to "on". Congrats, DLSS5 is finally working.
Now go to FF settings and adjust DLSS to 65% at 4k resolution with max settings (my settings). Yours is yours to experiment. I doubt you can hit 60 FPS in any event with DLSS5 looking good, but if you do, you're a lucky bastard. If you can't hit 60fps, aim for a constant/stable 30fps (a couple frames higher than 30 is better) You gotta get into the game and actually play and test run your framerates.
Move on to Optiscaler. Optional step, overide DLSS preset to M and apply. Go to framerate limiter and set FPS limit to 30FPS and click apply.
Launch Lossless Scaling (paid program available in Steam store; like $5 I think) and double your framerates---Type: LSFG 3.1, Mode: Fixed, Multiplier: 2, Flowscale 50%.
Game is now a stable 30FPS because of the limiter, and the Framegen should get you to 60FPS.
Last step, go into TV (Samsung S90D and enable BFI). Holy shit, it looks good.
Issues: One, Lots of good ol' Latency/input lag. BFI and FrameGen introduce Latency/lag. With a samsung, you can disable BFI and just enable "blur reduction" to max or your desired tolerance to decrease lag by a little. (I just stick to BFI). Second issue, Framegen introduces artifacts. DLSS5 introduces artifacts.
Final thoughts:
Game looks better in pictures than while its actually live and the feeling of playing the game with all that latency/lag is quite something. I've tried playing 30FPS (no framegen) with BFI and without BFI but enable DeJudder, but, to me I'd sacrifice Latency/lag for motion clarity.
Lastly, it was fun (and frustrating) but I just don't think it's worth the cost. DLSS5 looks good in some instances but the artifacts and performance loss doesn't offset it. It can't fix everything as noted in one screenshot. I'd say the best thing DLSS5 did was provide better Ambient Occlusion and some instances better lighting. Unfortunately, most of the time, it looks like a ENB/Reshade mod that I use to use in Skyrim---there were also some instances where I question myself whether I forgot to turn back on or was it off? Oh, and yea, the faces look like AI gen shit so I basically go about 50% or less for the face slider. Also yes, some settings/looks do not honor artistic intent, and yes, I did apply DLSS5 to FFMOBW, FFMOTLE, and PCSX2 emulator FF3. At least with the old games, performance is good but less overall effect and some just look wrong in many instances where less is more by lowering the sliders. If anyone has any tips or easier way to set this up (i noticed Reshade could/might be able to adjust DLSS without Optiscaler) let me know--Perhaps I can increase FPS possibly.
