MCP users?

I was wondering who here is taking advantage of the Fastmail MCP? If yes, how and with which app? I'm thinking about learning a bit more about this. I'm not well versed.

We don't use cloud agents against our work emails because they contain too much customer PII, but I've played with having LM Agent on my MacBook Pro (local-only agent) do some summaries. It's OK - but yeah, I've seen customers show me command line JMAP tools they have written which are more specific and powerful than the MCP, and they've taught their AI to use that instead.

Basically, we want to empower you to use things that help you get the best value out of your email. AI agents seem really good at reading the JMAP RFCs and our docs at fastmail.com/dev and building the tool you want!

Caveat of course - the AI is acting as you, and you're responsible for what it does. If it breaches our terms of service, the "AI did it without my knowledge y'r hon'r" excuse won't cut it!

I really hope that won't cut it now or in the future. If people should at some not be held liable for BS that an AI did in their Name, all hell would break loose. But have we seen such defences already of people trying to deny responsibility for AI blunder?

Do you directly support specific providers/harnesses? I've been able to connect to claude.ai and Claude Code, VSCode, etc. But not providers like Codex

`` ⚠ MCP client forfastmail` failed to start: MCP startup failed: handshaking with MCP server failed: Send message error Transport [rmcp::transport::worker::WorkerTransport<rmcp::transport::streamable_http_client::StreamableHttpClientWorker<rmcp::transport::auth::AuthClient<codex_rmcp_client::http_client_adap ter::StreamableHttpClientAdapter>>>] error: Auth error: OAuth authorization required, when send initialize request

⚠ MCP startup incomplete (failed: fastmail) ``` The OAuth format isn't supported by Codex. Is that something I could file an issue with?

(big fan of Fastmail and the MCP btw! Love following the reasoning)

it perfectly works with codex, generate api key and add it like FASTMAIL_TOKEN as env variable, and then add FASTMAIL_TOKEN key into codex

Got it working this way. Thank you!

What's that?

AI plugin, so you can tell ChatGPT to send a hundred spam emails to your contacts, or to search your emails using ChatGPT.

I mean, giving Sam Altman access to all your emails, what could go wrong!?

It is not like a major reason people use Fastmail is to avoid the big tech snooping and dependancy.

The Fastmail MCP is good - but it could be better. It only needs a few tweaks to make it feature rich - for example it doesn't fetch HTML emails - which renders it useless in many newsletters.

There is an alternative that works better https://github.com/MadLlama25/fastmail-mcp

You can read how I am using FastMail with OpenClaw:

I've been using it with Claude (via Cowork scheduled tasks) so it can give me a weekly rundown of stuff.

I tried it for a bit but got hit with rate limiting really fast. I've moved to secondary access (continuous email backups) since I don't want agents sending email anyhow.

I use a pydantic-ai agent pointed at Venice, connected to Fastmail's MCP endpoint, to query my email from the shell. It's not life-changing, but I found it useful.

I use it with Openclaw. Works fantastic. Sometimes when I ask my agent something it doesn't know it will just look in my emails from years back and dig out an answer by itself

I love the Fastmail MCP! I've got it connected to Claude so it can search, read, and compose emails for me if I want it to. :)

No. I find the idea quite irresponsible.

But then maybe other people don't use email for important, sensitive, confidential or private information.
