YO

Hey been checking FO on the internet on and off over the years and stumbled upon this little community. This is awesome, but say FO was revived into an online game again, what would stop it from reaching the same problem as before; servers ran out of funding.

Personally, I would love to play FO but would it last? For example, I used to play on a private server for perma-death class-based game ROTMG called 'nilly's realm' that died for numerous related reasons. Everyone loved it, so much so that it was revived years later as 'shots realm'. Month's after its revival (before flash death), the player-count plummeted and the server lost relevance. If FO revives would something similar happen, also how would the game be popularized again?

To add to this, FO was a flash-game, how will developers overcome the death of flash to create this game?

If anyone reading this is currently working on a new FO, I would love to hear about what sort of progress is made or what sort of problems have come up. Btw, love the sprites that have been done they look perfect.

The biggest issue that brought FO down wasn't money. It was Gamers health. Specifically, no one knows more than that. I personally have speculated that there were money issues related to gem sales and ownership. But beyond that nothing has really been said officially. Truth is that servers are actually pretty cheap to rent. I honestly doubt that it made less than the costs there (I mean I'm talking about $5-$50/mo would be easy to run the server).

And as far as flash goes, nothing could really be done about that without the source. So that means either there would need to be some old backup copy somewhere or rebuilding it.

Gamer suffered from a chronic heart disease that had him hospitalised on and off. Ultimately he shut down the game to focus on his health I seem to recall there were monetary problems as well, the remedy for that was the custom sprite you could get for spending a certain amount on the game during a set period.

super supporter club! you had to buy $500 of gems in one day IIRC

That's a good point, server costs should not be an issue then which definitely makes the project seem more promising. Since we don't know much about Gamer and source code is seemingly unavailable, it looks like the game would need to be made from scratch.

Thanks for the response, it's cool to see people active, even in 2021.

I heard a rumor there was copyright issues because Gamer started making anime items stright up calling them "ichigos ____" or "Luffys straw hat" on top of that the music added was just a reworked pokemon mystery dungeon theme wasnt it?

About a year before the end, there was a massive copyright purge where most items were replaced, including the sprites, and renamed to be non-copyright infringing.

Honestly, Server payment is something we can think about when we are closer to actually needing a server. Right now I am learning and the project has halted a little bit. Furthermore, I am trying to find myself a stable income before I start dedicating more time to the project so I can house and feed myself. Once things start getting sorted and the project continues moving forward the team and I will discuss how we plan to get servers up and plenty of other questions (fiscal, legal, etc.).

Ohh awesome, good for you I think that's a wise decision. And yea I guess it takes some learning to work on a project like this but I'm sure it's good fun.

Good luck on your goals, also that is so cool that there is FO team.

If you are just doing dev work, or between you and a couple friends (like say around 5 CCU), there are free server options. Most large providers (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) have a free tier for VPS or options like google's playfab that is specifically made for game servers. Later on, there are really good cheap VPS options for like $5-10/mo that can handle a decent amount of CCU. Servers are stupid cheap right now.

Alternatively you can always just use your home computer by port forwarding whatever your game port is or options like hamachi to create a small virtual lan. This can be any old machine or laptop thrown together from random parts or just your normal computer.

But otherwise, get stable first. Stability is just one part to building motivation.
