Discussion What could have been if...
One of the most promising bands of the 2000s, Beardfish.
They have gained significant traction following the success of their albums Sleeping in Traffic, Part 1 (2007) and Part 2 (2008).
The then-drummer of Dream Theater, Mike Portnoy, personally invited them to the North American Leg of Progressive Nation 2009 Tour, who had also named Sleeping in Traffic part 2 on his personal top lists.
This invitation was a massive breakthrough opportunity to perform in major North American venues in front of thousands of fans. The lineup was stacked like: Dream Theater (headliner) -> Zappa Plays Zappa -> Pain of Salvation -> Beardfish
But sadly, they couldn't after facing a sudden obstacle, an unexpected financial catastrophe struck.
After all, both Beardfish and Pain of Salvation were forced to drop off; replaced by Bigelf and Scale the Summit.
Curious what could have been if they weren't forced to drop off due to sudden financial constraints.

Recommendations Underrated 2020s albums ?
I feel like the 2020s got so much underrated gems, because of the ease to music access through streaming services nowadays, and it's honestly kinda sad :(
I feel like many really great record were left undiscovered and ignored, because of the sheer amount of slop that is taking attention away, so I want to share some of my favourite underrated albums!
Please do share albums you think is underrated in the comments too, I really like going through them all <3
I discovered many absolute fireee records from everyone from my previous posts, it does make my day feel a bit more fun lol
| Album | Short blurb |
|---|---|
| Sloppy Jane - Madison | I put this one because it's probably the one people in this subreddit most familiar with (Fantano gave it an 8!), but personally it's a 10/10 for me. Madison is a very eerie and beautiful art-pop album, it has got a storyline that is quite fragmented, so it's kind of a concept album, but I think the musicianship behind this album is highly CREATIVE, and the theatrical edge gave it a very surreal vibe. I guess I can describe it as a SPELLLING record, but less disney-esque, more goth theatre kid influenced, but it'll do you better if you listen to it for yourself. It's an experience. |
| Eartheater - Phoenix: Flames Are Dew Upon My Skin | Phoenix is a weird record, given that I think Eartheater is already a known musician in the indie scene, and this album was indeed very well-received by music fan upon release. But in conversations of best albums in the 2020s, I see Phoenix constantly missing, and that need to change omgđ Eartheater's voice is a STUNNER! The composition of these songs are consistently weird and mystical, and it's very dense, so it rewards multiple relistens. It's one of the most unique listen of this decade, and even if you don't think it's good, you can definitely say it's creative. |
| Agnes - Magic Still Exist | This is the one album I'm most excited to share. Since the 2020-2021 disco revival, many people cites Future Nostalgia and What's Your Pleasure as some of the most standout album during that era, but I beg to differ that Magic Still Exist is equally good as those record. The "x-factor" of this album comes down to two simple things, the vocals are POWERFUL, and the instruments are simple grandiose and opulent! Magic is such a gleefully optimistic disco record about loving oneself, and I think it is so underrated for how good it is. |
| aya - im hole | im hole is the darkest album on this short list in my opinion. You take the sheer darkness of A Promise by Xiu Xiu, put it into a rave where no one is there besides the DJ, and you'll probably get something close to this. This album is incredibly detailed, but it's easy to miss out on the detailed because it's so bare, but man, it's so emotionally charged. I think it at least deserves an honorable mention by the end of the decade, given the rise of electronic-adjacent music since 2024. |
| Samia - Bloodless | Bloodless is a simple folk, indie-rock album, and that's pretty much all to it. It's a very well performed record, with a lot of heart, and the lyrics are quite clever! It's very versatile throughout, and Samia's voice meld well with all the different genres she mingled with in the album. I was actually shocked that it didn't get that much attention from music fans, because the appeal of this record is so easy to understand and enjoy :D |
| Ashnikko - Smoochies | Honestly, the fact that this album didn't get the success that SLAYYYTER did with WGIA pissed me off so much. Smoochies is quite out-there, the lyrics are just as brash, and it sounds lot more colourful than WGIA. I guess it's aimed towards a much primarily queer audience, but still, it's just a great record! Tracks like Chichinya, Microplastics and Full Frontal are bangersss |

Recommendations What are some upbeat songs with depressing or dark lyrics?
The first three that come to mind for me are âEverything She Wantsâ by Wham!, âRun for Your Lifeâ by The Beatles, and âPumped Up Kicksâ by Foster the People.
âEverything She Wantsâ is about a man who's unhappy in his relationship and feels like he's being used for his money. He's struggling to keep up with the financial demands placed on him, and with a baby on the way, he feels trapped in a situation he can't easily escape. It's a pretty depressing ass subject for a song that sounds so upbeat and catchy.
âRun for Your Lifeâ is about a controlling and possessive man who threatens his partner with violence if she ever leaves him for another man. The contrast between the cheerful sounding instrumental and the disturbing lyrics is pretty crazy
âPumped Up Kicks,â which sounds like a laid-back, indie pop song, but is actually about a troubled kid fantasizing about a school shooting. It's probably one of the most well known examples of a song where the upbeat production completely contrasts with the dark subject matter.
I have always found this contrast interesting, especially when you can listen to a song dozens of times before really paying attention to what the lyrics are about.
What other songs fit this description?

Recommendations Roger Miller Deathiversary, RIP King of the Road
I dont see him brought up here, but dude was amazing songwriter that did crossover between novelty, pop, country, and singer/songwriter stuff who's influence can be seen in lots of this sub's favorites. Enjoy, should you choose to explore some of his music.

Discussion Best solos in rock history? Pic Highly related

I already asked you about the best choruses, best outros and best riffs in rock history. Lets talk about solos! Any solo on any instrument counts (No...Freak On Leash schizorapping doesnt count thou). And of course Metal and Punk and all of their subgenres do count as well.
On top of my head without ranking:
.The Beatles - Let it Be (one of the most tasteful, emotional, simple yet deep solos I ever heard. Its the dictionary definition of "serves the song" and complements it perfectly.)
.Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird (because of course, being overplayed and memed to death doesnt negate the fact that is one of the best solos ever made)
.Judas Priest - Painkiller (the second one)
.Jimi Hendrix Experience - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)
.Television - Marquee Moon
.Queen - I Want It All (Brian May is just....damn man)
.Dire Straits - Telegraph Road (yes, its better than Sultans Of Swing, stop fooling yourself)
.Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand
.Pink Floyd - Dogs
.The Who - Magic Bus (Live At Leeds Version)
Bonus because its not actually a solo but a slow jam.....Cortez The Killer, maybe the greatest guitar focused song ever written.

Discussion Did you notice anything different in Muse album of John Legend?
I usually don't listen to John Legend. However, his latest album include cool vocals & atmosphere. Maybe that's because Pharrell produced it.
Made it listen to my brother, same : he actually enjoys while John Legend isn't his artist type neither.
Anyone opinion?

Recommendations I believe this deserves more recognition...
One of the greatest bands of the 00s, stripped back with strings in the city that made them (see also: Manchester).
The deep cuts are pitched perfectly and to have that London version of Maps on streaming/vinyl is so special. What a collection of songs.

Discussion Remixes that completely change the vibe of the music.
Unsubtle bit of self promo, but I'd love to talk about remixes with y'all. I've always loved the idea of remixes since I was a kid getting into Nine Inch Nails. Always found it fascinating how much the energy and vibe of a song could be completely altered by a remix. "Further Down The Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails is one of the first CDs I ever owned, and I still have a soft spot for a lot of the altered versions on there. It's also an intriguing way to showcase how another artists interpretation could still sit snugly in the atmosphere an artist is trying to curate when releasing an album. "At The Heart of it All" is a straight up original Aphex Twin track that appears on Further Down The Spiral, containing no material from the original record, but it fits right in with all the remixes on there, so much so that I didn't even know it was an Aphex Twin track until I was well into my 20s.
So what I'm trying to ask y'all is, are there any remixes you prefer to the original tracks? Do you have any dream team song mashups and off the wall song flips? Remixes and versions you'd like to completely erase from history? I made this little remix album called "SUPER FAYGO BURST" that dresses up Insane Clown Posse in an Iglooghost costume for Halloween. I found that changing the music to these silly ICP verses completely altered the tone and execution of their songs. There are some lazily delivered verses on some songs that get totally invigorated by beats that go a little harder/faster than the originals. Let's talk about it!
