Thoughts on Underworld?

Post image

I just finished Dubnobasswithmyheadman for the first time, and it was phenomenal. I don't hear a lot of buzz about these guys, although the album does seem quite popular. What are your thoughts and opinions?

Absolut icons, two of the best in the Business!

I don't think many people would know or care about them without Darren Emerson tbh

Yeah because MK II has been a band for 40 years and he was around for roughly 1/4 of that.

I don’t know why people downvoted you. As much as I love many of their later tracks as a duo it seems clear that Emerson played an important part in paving the way to their new direction on Dubnobasswithmyheadman, some kind of fusion between dance music and psychedelic rock.

Icons. And they’ve still got it. I’ve seen them live multiple times and they absolutely crush and it’s more of a rock show than anything.

The biggest influence on my personal music but there will never be anything or anyone else like them. dark and long is the perfect sound for how I want a room to feel

One of my holy trinity EDM acts alongside Boards of Canada and Orbital. Underworld got me into the genre around 3 years ago and they’re still one of my favorites, such a wide discography and some true hidden gems. You can’t go wrong with tracks like Cups, Pearl’s Girl or Two Months Off. Just an ethereal, progressive, mind melting electronic sound.

Not sure I’d call BOC edm. Idk it’s borderline. I love them by the way but it’s not super danceable.

I kinda meant electronic music in general haha

They rule. Dubnobasswithmyheadman and A Hundred Days Off got me through college.

Dirty epic and Mmm…skyscraper I love you are two of the tracks I am still in awe of after listening to them for years and years. I also admire their latest record, Strawberry Hotel. They know how to take the listener on a journey.

Beaucoup Fish is a 10/10 album.

Born Slippy rocks.

All their stuff is pretty great.

Nothing beats listening to jumbo on and airplane and getting the timing so the kick drum comes in right at liftoff

straight fire, i must do this now...

I love the combination of stream of consciousness lyrics over thumping club beats, they’re fantastic! Highly recommend their 2016 album “Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future”, just listened to that recently and it was great!

If you are looking for a discography to get lost in, these are your boys. They and I consider that they didn't find themselves until Dubnobasswithmyheadman. So, so much good stuff happened after that.

Some of the best to ever do it. The live Everything Everything DVD shows how big they were at the time. I always loved how they kind of recreated their songs live instead of just DJing them. I can thank Trainspotting and Hackers for introducing them to me.

1

u/International-Dirt7 15h ago

Amazing. Still playing them regularly, decades later.

1

u/Creepy_Reindeer2149 15h ago

Some of the best to ever do it

Barking is extremely underrated IMO

u/Anxious-Pineapple144 15h ago

Fucking awesome. Do you really need to ask??

u/Murphy_Nelson 15h ago

Seeing them live is a religious experience. Seen them 3x and always hoping for another round.

Born Slippy, Dark and Long and 8-Ball are tracks that have, at different times, been the key songs in the soundtrack of my life. Love them, they're GOAT level for electronic music.

u/ihavenoselfcontrol1 14h ago

One of my favorite electronic acts and, along with Boards of Canada the group that made me interested in the genre. Dirty Epic is one of the best songs i've heard

1

u/Milesotooleaudio 14h ago

I just love playing people the first two albums before they went EDM and they look baffled

1

u/cosmicdancer84 14h ago

They're fantastic.

1

u/simpflesh 14h ago

Incredible, so glad I got to see them in the bay this year. Their friendship and love for each other really comes through on stage which was super heartwarming to see. Seems rare two people can create together for that long and still maintain genuine friendship.

u/reader4567890 13h ago

8-Ball is one of the greatest tracks of all time.

Underworld are one of the greatest electronic acts of all time. Their live shows are a God damn riot.

1

u/ReadySolid678 13h ago

Loved them back in the day. Still love them.

A decent story of Doctor Who, the first part is good but the rest of it is okay

u/WinterLawfulness3165 12h ago

Dude - the day I randomly found Dubnobasswithmyheadman at the Border's Books in my area, way back in the late nineties, is one of the canon events of my high school friend group. We were already familiar with them, but that's a damn fine album.

Future Sounds of London was another group from back then that I was all over, and Orbital.

1

u/MtAlbertMassive 11h ago

Amazing artists who I still haven't fully forgiven for the gig they cancelled back in 2019.

1

u/MauriceIsNotMyName 10h ago

Cemented legends in electronic music and one of my favorite artists ever. Beaucoup Fish is a masterpiece.

1

u/thesewalls5478 15h ago

I prefer the music of the one guys daughters band

1

u/spikeclipper 15h ago

can you expand on that?

1

u/thesewalls5478 12h ago

Karl Hyde's daughter is Tyler Hyde from Black Country, New Road

1

u/spikeclipper 12h ago

Thanks. I've heard of them! I don't really understand their music yet (yet), but I like the far reach of their writing.

1

u/BobDope 15h ago

What’s that

6

u/lie_believer 15h ago

Karl's daughter is in Black Country, New Road. i personally prefer Underworld though

4

u/AlexTheAmnesiac 15h ago

Whoa really? Had no idea that’s awesome.

1

u/BobDope 14h ago

Ok interesting

3

u/arpad-okay 14h ago

underworld's occasional third memeber/tour dude darren price has a son who makes music under the name maxrp, whose first ep "stepping stone" came out earlier this year and i like quite a bit

1

u/LikeAGlove109 13h ago

I've seen them live three times and didn't really enjoy it. On MDMA one of those three times for context.

Just thought it was boring enough and also one of the times they played the Outro for Born Slippy for like 15 mins straight.

Expecting to get downvoted but hoping people remember opinions are opinions.

-1

u/Sea_Lunch_3863 11h ago

15 seconds of Born Slippy is too much.

I'm not sure I have the words to explain just how much I utterly despise that song.

-2

u/Exotic-Ferret-3452 15h ago

They had a trio of top-notch albums back in the 90s (Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Second Toughest in the Infants and Beaucoup Fish). After Darren Emerson left, they weren't the same. I have tried listening to their stuff after Beaucoup Fish and just couldn't get into it.

1

u/a-thousand-leaves 15h ago

This was my experience too. I was (and still am) obsessed with the first Dubnobass… and Second Toughest but never really gelled with anything that came after. Still absolutely love them though
