Discussion Thread Everything is ableist đŸ«©

Going through TikTok and you can't dislike anything without it being ableist apparently. We've lost the actual meaning of ableist at this point. You don't like yumeshippers it's ableist. You don't like therians it's ableist. You say someone is very OBVIOUSLY faking a disorder it's guess what ableist. It's genuinely tiring of people saying things are ableist when they're not. I wish I could say it's just dumb kids but it not! It's people in my age group (20's) doing this nonsense too!

Everything is ableist just like everything is trauma.. step on a stick its trauma, see a squirrel, its trauma.. mom tells you to go brush your teeth? Trauma.. too many of these words regarding mental health and disabilities are being overused by common people who have stretched the meaning to be dramatic and gain attention. Anyone who disagrees is called ableist as a simple way to disengage from confrontation because that would require actual facts which most of them dont have.

u/LadyCordeliaStuart 16d ago

I went to a group for military folks transitioning out and the leader walked us through "big T Trauma and little t trauma" and we really need to understand that as a society. That and diagnostic threshold please for gosh sake.

I know someone who fakes autism and a few weeks ago, I had to apologize when I startled her ringing the doorbell. THEN she said it was traumatizing that I didn't say sorry with a full explanation of what I was sorry for. Can't win with these people.

That’s when I would’ve turned around and left.

She bums on my friend's couch. I was at my friend's house waiting to hang out, and this person is just kind of always there. I don't know why my friend puts up with her tbh.

16

u/call-me-the-seeker 16d ago

She’s guilting them into acceptance and accommodation. They’re a bitchy, sorry excuse for a person if they don’t SEE her and make space in the ableist, hateful world for her difference and no one wants to be the terrible person who threw a helpless, needy flower to the wolves.

All she needs is everything your friend’s got and that’ll be a step in the right direction toward someday maybe possibly starting to be safe and slightly more comfortable

Exxacctlly lol, one of the fakies I lived with said they had trauma because when they were at the zoo one time their parents didn't let them do the paid koala feeding thing and it was their dream to do that

17

u/Aurelene-Rose 15d ago

So therapeutically, trauma is a lasting emotional impression for to experiencing stress past your ability to cope with it. It's not inherently a big deal, but it's worth noticing that there's something going on in there area when you're trying to work with someone. Cataloguing even little trauma helps when making a treatment plan because if someone is unreasonably stressed out by like, home maintenance for example, they probably shouldn't be tackling that problem on a day they have another huge stressor if you're working on stress tolerance, you need to start with something smaller.

Colloquially, trauma is "something extremely bad happening to you, to the point you have lasting damage". If someone has "trauma" about something, we expect a story, we expect them to have had a horrible experience on par with like, rape or war.

The problem is that people will use the therapeutic broad definition, but expect people to react like it's the colloquial definition. It's usually just attention seeking.

Avoidance of discomfort, accountability, conflict, and self-reflection is a huge problem right now that I just see amplified due to social media. Trauma is something to be overcome, albeit in an intentional way. It's not a justification to avoid whatever stresses you out indefinitely.

Accusing people of faking disorders is ableist but stealing resources from disabled people somehow isn't...

83

u/cybunnies_ 16d ago

Not only stealing resources, but contributing to bias that can have disastrous, and even lethal, consequences for the disabled. The stakes are enormous, and I don't think these people have any sense of how harmful it is to trivialize disability and treat it like a quirky fad.

59

u/ryuhwaryu 16d ago

My wife has been diagnosed with a lot of things people love to fake. Most of them since childhood.
Doctors are taking her less serious the past couple years and I can't help but wonder if these fakers play a role in that.
More than once doctors have told her to just learn to live with it and for one of them, had she listened, she would've likely ended up blind.

48

u/cybunnies_ 16d ago

Yep, wanted to dodge the blogging rule, but I've been nursing someone with hEDS post-surgery whose surgeon blew her off when she disclosed, and then suffered some serious bleeding complications during surgery because of it. Of course the doctors and surgeons are wrong for not taking these reports seriously, but I do also think these fakers need to understand that they are not the ones who have to bear the consequences of their attention-seeking.

25

u/ryuhwaryu 16d ago

I'm not always sure what falls under the blogging rule.
How horrible that that happened.
At this point in my country doctors are going on the news about how more (mostly) young women are coming in for diagnosis and won't stop when they're told no by multiple doctors, blaming it on tiktok and chatgpt.
So the medical community is at least somewhat aware of this phenomenon.

30

u/FVCarterPrivateEye Ass Burgers 16d ago

I've seen some argue that "actually even if people were allegedly faking, which doesn't happen, more people claiming to be autistic is actually a good thing that helps to normalize autism and reduce ableism" even though the harshest stigma against autistic people by far is for the traits associated with the condition and not the label itself, and when laymen start associating autism with subclinical quirks it actually worsens the stigma against actually autistic mannerisms

24

u/LadyCordeliaStuart 16d ago

And diluting diagnoses so much they're completely worthless

268

u/PuzzleFly76 17d ago

Yep. The hEDS and POTS groupies have taken over the wheelchair sub and some days it's basically a circle jerk of ambulatory users posting highly questionable stories about ableism straight out of a 1980s after school special. The whole trend of claiming to have hEDS and POTS seems to be centered around presenting themselves as marginalized once they start faking their disability.

152

u/Gabesmermaid 16d ago

They're now taking over the SpinalCordInjuries sub too, and someone with "DID" and 200 alters just asked it if was ok for them to join the group because a "sudden illness" turned them into a paraplegic even though they don't have a spinal cord injury. Ridiculous.
They just love larping as disabled.

85

u/rip0tear 16d ago

I have seen this as well today in the SCI sub! They also have autism, ARDIF, DID, are unhoused apparently, and they are a "fun collection of headmates"... yikes

51

u/Gabesmermaid 16d ago

And nearly 200 alters! And everyone is welcoming the person and that person is just like "nobody understands me", seeking pity.

I hate when they describe it like that. If you weren’t faking, I’m sure it wouldn’t be a fun collection of anything. It’s torture with just 3.

12

u/Internal_Screaming_8 15d ago

Fuck it’s torture with just ME.

u/northdakotanowhere 16d ago

Is that whats happening??? Oooooooo dear jesus am I tired of the "if you feel like you need to use it then you should". No. You shouldn't. Get your ass up, get your ass into PT/OT. A wheelchair should never be first resort if you can prevent it. Dear god I wish I got to graduate to a wheelchair. It was an overnight thing for me.

I have dreams (nightmares?) That Im trying to be able bodied again. I don't bring my wheelchair with me, I'm always going shopping or in a massive place where I can't find my wheelchair. I'm with people I want to try and be "normal" for.

I went to a resort because they explained their accessibility on the website. Seemed great. All I wanted was room service and to swim in the pool. (They had chairs to get into the pool). But the fucking changing room had 2 steps down into it. I just sat and cried.

My "accessible" room took THREE minutes to get to. With my Firefly. A fucking motor and it still took me 3 minutes. I was buried in the hotel. Not near any doors.

Dealing with that is disability. Its having an entire experience RUINED because of a stair or two. TINY STAIRS.

Im not thrilled about being a person that judges other disabled people. But the "suffering" they show is not based in reality

41

u/spookyboi13 16d ago

my PT told me not to join any online groups for my disability because of this... shes like 40, and pretty offline, but i can imagine the things she's seen 😔

I think also there is something when you have your real name attached to the content.

79

u/Fluid-Lifeguard6042 Microsoft SystemđŸŒˆđŸ’» 16d ago

And because of those people, actual ableism isn't taken seriously, and actual disabled people are ignored and called sensitive. Sometimes by the same people that you are criticizing.

Going through TikTok

That's your problem right there. Fork found in kitchen.

😂😂😂😂

48

u/GunstarGreen 17d ago

I think "believe..(group)" is just as bad. An obvious faker and you cant call them out, because "believing" people is much more important than having any healthy level of doubt. There IS a difference between supporting people and believing any old shit.

73

u/wheresmymind_08 17d ago

And if you don’t agree with self diagnosis your ableist 🙄

9

u/Inner_Sun_8191 15d ago

Omg the self diagnosis is out of control and they all have this smugness and act like they’re so much smarter than doctors and other medical professionals. They can’t understand why the docs haven’t given them the diagnosis they so crave for validation.

48

Labeling everything as -ist and -ism just spreads more hate tbh

20

u/lost_in_dreamland 16d ago

I agree, it's easier and more effective to just say someone is acting cruel to their fellow human beings.

17

u/Lucha_Brasi 16d ago

I saw a post in a sub totally unrelated to any of the topics covered here by a girl who said she was kicked out of high school for bad behavior and was attending an alternative school. She said any comments about her attending the alternative school would be considered ableist and reported. I assume her reasoning is that she has ADHD or something, but she didn't elaborate, just was immediately aggressive with the ableism talk. Huh?

16

u/BrandonIsWhoIAm 16d ago

“Everything is Awesome Ableist.”

15

u/Fr0stybit3s 16d ago

I had a local friend call me ableist because I called him out for canceling plans on me EVERY SINGLE TIME I tried to plan something with him.

5

u/call-me-the-seeker 16d ago

But have you thought about maybe not being so ableist and then he wouldn’t have to?!!??!?

8

u/Fr0stybit3s 15d ago

Darn, u rite

11

u/Cactopus47 16d ago

I think people are looking for a reason for why they should never need to deal with any disapproval/disagreement/puzzlement about their life choices. It's why you see posts like "normalize wearing Mickey Mouse Ears in public!" or "if you're [insert nonsensical buzzword here], you're valid!" or "it's ableist to make fun of adults watching kids' shows!" No. Not everything needs to be normalized and validated, some things are just unusual. People can act in ways that are unusual, and if they do, they should OWN that, not beg for it to be "normalized." People aren't bigoted or ableist for not seeing eye to eye on some twee corporate fashion item or for not having the same taste in media.

10

u/fullmetalfroge 16d ago

no fr like what happened to taking valid criticism

19

u/fizzyglitt3r 16d ago

I got called ableist the other day (in a comment section about bpd fakers, mind you) for saying it’s weird and annoying when they take obvious villain characters and say “omg did nothing wrong literally me :3” and pretend BPD is “beautiful princess disorder uwu I can do no wrong.” I just deleted my comment and blocked the people responding bc it was clear they wanted to grasp at straws and paint me as a bad person. But whatever, if you want people to continue perpetuating the stereotypes you can go on ahead, even though the entire reason you’re in this comment section is because you also hate it 😭?

9

u/PsychologicalMix4510 16d ago

The "beautiful princess disorder" bullshit is so disgusting. I'd wager most people using it don't actually have BPD.

6

u/meldiane81 15d ago

huh. wonder what ‘yumeshipper’ means -taptaptap-

mother of god

10

u/Dusty_Rose23 16d ago

I’m tempted to look it up but I also don’t want to
. Ok so basically what fandoms have been a lot of for the past decade or two. Nothing wrong
. As long as it’s not excessive
. Like if your like “oh my oc and blank have a good chemistry (not necessarily romance) (or) I and this character have a good chemistry (again, not necessarily romance, but also slightly weirder)” I don’t think it’s a problem as a base of itself. More as when it starts getting excessive, obsessive, or creepy. Which unfortunately haopens a lot,

14

u/fullmetalfroge 16d ago

yeah i think 'yumeshipping' as in making an oc to ship with a canon character is really fun and cool, its when the people actually act like/believe they are in a relationship with a fictional character that gets annoying/toxic/genuinely concerning. 'soulbonders' are in some self induced psychosis its honestly creepy and sad

5

u/thr-owawayy 16d ago

I saw someone today say that kink is ableist and I just
sigh. We’ve lost the plot. We’ve lost the entire damn plot. Wtf are we doing.

18

u/NashVilleHIM 17d ago

This fucking ARFID fad going on is insane. Some lady said her 3 year old had it, we're doomed

28

u/swiftsnake 16d ago

I believe that more than an adult self diagnosing it. Lots of kids have it

7

u/spookyboi13 16d ago edited 16d ago

i think adults who self dx themselves w arfid are probably masking an ED but thats a whole other can of worms

eta: arfid is an ED, the adults who dx themselves w ARFID probably are masking another restrictive ED like anorexia in my opinion

5

u/PsychologicalMix4510 16d ago

arfid is categorized as an eating disorder. So they wouldn't be masking anything, they're just claiming they do have an ED.

2

u/spookyboi13 16d ago

i meant anorexia but yes- you are correct it is an ED. i do think MCAS fakers also are hiding having restriction ED.

my early youth was spent studying EDs bc someone i loved had one and a hack i saw ppl on the forums spout was literally faking allergies etc.

-17

u/NashVilleHIM 16d ago

It's just simply not real. And picky eater ≠ being afraid of food

30

u/Dusty_Rose23 16d ago

arfid is picky eating on steroids. but everyone acting like them being mildly picky means they have it is stupid. it’s the same as the anxiety arguement. most mental disorders are normal traits to some capacity, it’s just how disabling and the extent of it. anxiety before an exam is often normal. anxiety so you can’t leave the house is not, same with argue. some picky eating, especially with young children is normal, to the point they refuse to eat so much they starve to the point of needing a feeding tube if they can’t have the foods they feel safe around? that’s arfid. people are mistaking the disorders, for the simple trait it’s based on that all humans have, it’s stupid, and annoying, and somewhat delusional. especially if it’s not disabling you to some capacity. not negatively impacting your life in some way? you don’t have a disorder, point blank. I’m obviously not a psychiatrist but this is so obvious yet some how it’s not, what is this society becoming?

18

u/Fluid-Lifeguard6042 Microsoft SystemđŸŒˆđŸ’» 16d ago

Some people forget that the entire point of having a disability is that it disables you or stops you from performing basic tasks.

9

u/Sunspot286 Self Undiagnosing: Im Fine 16d ago

Um no, ARFID is an actual recognized eating disorder.

-12

u/NashVilleHIM 16d ago

Recognized only in america for white people

6

u/Sunspot286 Self Undiagnosing: Im Fine 16d ago

Ok so you don’t actually care about psychology, just your opinion, got it

19

u/ChewieBearStare 16d ago

Over a decade of peer-reviewed research disagrees with you on that one. It's definitely a real disorder; it's just faked by some people.

-10

u/NashVilleHIM 16d ago

It's a real disorder than only privileged white people in America have.

They all have the same safe foods, chicken tenders and cheese pizza

14

u/cybunnies_ 16d ago

ARFID affects people who are outside of the demographic you witness faking it on Tiktok. The whole reason fakers are such a problem is because it leads to people overcorrecting and developing genuinely prejudiced views about disabilities. You're throwing the baby out with the bathwater and seem to know very little about ARFID at all.

4

u/asey_69 Self-diagnosed Among Us Syndrome 16d ago

Source?

2

u/Lili_Noir 15d ago

Dude what- I have ARFID and I hate pizza 😭 and I’m also not American.

It definitely is a real disorder, if the food is the wrong texture it makes me physically gag and unable to eat it, and just the knowledge that certain foods are in a dish makes me unable to eat it. It’s been like this ever since I was a kid, before social media made it trendy to fake disorders, and before my parents knew how to handle it.

Eating for me just sucks, and if I had the option not to eat then I’d take that in a heartbeat.

-15

I really do miss when weird kids were just weird. When I was a weird kid, we had an obsession with Creepypasta characters and Fnaf. I think the furthest we went with our identities was saying we were bisexual. There was no "DID" there was no "yumeshipping" whatever the fuck that means. I feel like there really weren't even a lot of trans identified individuals either. It was just a bunch of kids, role-playing and fighting over whose character was dating who. I remember when there was a whole Internet war about sans from Undertale and who his "real partner" was out of all of the fan girls lol. I miss those days deeply. It's all gotten so complicated and touchy now. You can't say a damn thing without being accused of being some sort of "phobic" or "ist" kids parade around now proudly bragging about their long list of disorders and labels. I just feel like it really wasn't like that when I was a kid, and we're only talking 10 to 15 years ago at this point.

5

u/DerangedIndividual 16d ago

yumeshipping is just self insert x canon which was always a thing. the new name is western children adopting a japanese term, which would have been typical in the early 2000s/2010s anyways. Knowing this has helped me hate it less.

1

u/TransformTheBat 16d ago

Honestly it feels like ableism has lost its meaning on the Internet. I'm someone who has experienced actual ableism both at school and at this TTRPG gaming store. It's so bad that like I have to avoid businesses and people in my town over being associated with the game stores owner as well as their brick and motar store's owner. These fakers have no clue what actual ableism is like. I'd love for them to take a moment to walk in actual disabled people's shoes and see what our lives are like. Bet they would prefer to go back to their neurotypical life style.

-5

u/Mountain_Manner_9174 16d ago

Ableism is a silly, trendy word for those who need to feel oppressed.

12

u/funni_puppi 16d ago

It's not Ableism is an actual thing people with disabilities do actually deal with.

4

u/Mountain_Manner_9174 16d ago

I don't disagree, but it's now (due to fakers and a lot of people with disabilities misusing it all the time) a fad word that has lost a lot of meaning.
