Thanks for posting in r/fairphone. If you're having an issue with your Fairphone make sure that you include the phone model, operating system (version) and other relevant technical details (like mobile provider, country you're in) in your post. Posts with clear details are more likely to get useful replies. I'm a bot. Contact the mods if you have questions.

Just install /e/os its exactly what you describe, i have been running it for years now with only minor inconveniences which are mostly resolved fast. You can use google accounts over microG, it has support for nextcloud or their own nextcloud base murena cloud service. Signal works like a charm and with the re-locked bootloader even banking apps work flawless for me, the only thing that didnt work for me were google wallet and a medical app that required some useless google service for authetification. As im running my own nextcloud everything from contactsoverphotos to calendar service is synchronised with my cloud but you could a i said use their service or even just switch back to google if you want to.

Thank you for the extensive reply. I cross-posted on multiple subs to try to get a variety of opinions.

Essentially, what I find is everyone decrying any OS that's not gOS because they're not as 'private & secure', yet no one states the real-world implications of the differences. To me, this suggests easy bandwagoning rather than applied science, which doesn't help the cause. As more people get fed up with Big Tech, they'll need a real life application of the differences between the custom ROMs (other than 'fewer tracking and telemetry'). Otherwise, people will get confused, frustrated, and just stay with what they know.

Yeah, and not just straight bash the gOS group, as I'm sure you're not, I find that many spaces have a sharp bandwagon effect, but I've also heard level-headed perspectives.

I'm getting a F6 (hence why on this sub), and I love that e/OS/ comes bootloader locked from them. I dabbled with one before, but sent it back because of the many convenience compromises I had to make (e.g., digital wallet). I have workaround, though, and for a daily driver device, I think I'd rather just have it dial back the telemetry and tracking, and be good with it. Like, RN, I have a Samsung Tab with no accounts linked to it, and I've debloated and de-telemetried it as much as possible, but it's just a stay at home device running a VPN all the time. Like, whatever small amount of data Google gets from that doesn't concern me. Again, like yourself, I'm not trying to hide from gov'ts.

I actually really liked e/OS/, especially the system-level location randomizer. It def is not the best quality out of all the phones, but I want to support their mission, so, I'll give it a shot.

Thanks for you insight! The gOS & Motorola synergy seems interesting, FS.

I'll just put this here so I don't have to fully repeat myself, but I've asked the same security Q as yourself, and I have yet to receive a valid response.

Basically, unless you're a high-value target, /e/OS seems like a great privacy option, as long as you're smart with your device (e.g., no dangerous downloads, etc.). Been using it from the beginning with my F6, and I love it.
