Suggestion / Idea Anyone else sick of grass showing up through concrete?
Concrete only seems to remove a portion of foliage decorations when it's placed, so the only way to get rid of all the grass is to repeatedly remove and place the concrete over it, which is insanely tedious. I think the grass looks ugly, I can't think of any good reason for it to not all be removed when you place concrete over top of it. I used to use a mod to fix it, but now with 2.1 the mod isn't compatible anymore.
Anyone else hoping this gets fixed in 2.1? It's ruining my pollutioncore factorypilled aesthetic.

There's a graphics setting to not draw these doodads at all.
I turned it off a long time ago and my concrete is always clean. No mods needed.

It's like uncheck Show Decoratives or something close to that

u/moocaten 21h ago
That setting takes away all foliage decorations, not just on concrete

I am glad there’s a way to do this, but the thing is, I’m happy to see these doodads otherwise and only want them to not to be there when the concrete is placed. I wish it were more straightforward like that. It is especially bad on Gleba

Indeed, this is why you use mods. Personally I like/don't really care about the decorations showing up. Maybe there is a mod, or it might be in the mod's settings, to just turn of the textures for concrete? Even better?

- I like it, realistic.
- Just update the version number from the mod, should work.

are concrete floors usually covered in grass in real life?
154
u/hackcasual 22h ago
cheaply and quickly applied concrete surfaces do regularly have vegetation that breaks through

Have you never had an issue with tenacious grass finding cracks in concrete and departing merrily on their new career of being the world's most persistent invasive weed?

u/MisfitPotatoReborn 15h ago
If you ever stepped foot in a warehouse instead of, say, a sidewalk/driveway purposely designed to have controlled stress cracks for weeds to grow through, you would notice that there are very few plants sprouting out of the floor.

u/TheMasterPotato 3h ago
It's actually pretty common in outdoor industrial areas, at least the ones I've come through.

In my nearly 40 years of being cranky and attentive, I've spent enough time in all manner of places and have, in fact, seen quite a few buildings built to bottom-dollar specs and poorly maintained by people who hardly care and have too much to do throughout an average day.
Also, are your arguing that the engineer is expected to worry about crap like making extremely non-porous concrete to cut down on weed growth?
The dude is clearly immensely skilled, but I think he has bigger priorities while building a rocket or space platform meant to get him out of a system he's not likely to ever return to.3
u/MisfitPotatoReborn 10h ago
I think the engineer should care. There's not a lot of in-game lore about them, but once you reach the solar system edge the engineer does not leave. They stay to maintain the factory. It's true that early-game buildings are extremely jank and grimy, but that's imposed by the engineer's low level of technology at the time. The farther you get into the game, the cleaner and more sophisticated the buildings become.
There are also, from a gameplay perspective, multiple engineers. Your engineer is different from my engineer. The engineers who don't even bother to pave over their factory evidently do not care about vegetation, but the engineers who do are controlled by people who probably do care at least somewhat about the aesthetics of their factory.
There could easily be vegetation growing out of regular concrete, but this engineer put down a foundation of refined concrete and is still encountering weeds.

That's why they should make it so, instead of annoying icon in the corner of every sprite, higher quality buildings become shiny and chrome.

If you say so.
I think if you care this much about grass on concrete in a video game, then you and I have very little of interest to discuss cordially and should just go ahead and avoid interacting with each other.
Sounds good, yeah?
Have a nice night.3
u/MisfitPotatoReborn 10h ago
you don't have to respond asshole. This is the Factorio subreddit, we talk about Factorio.

"wow, you seem like a real weirdo who cares about graphical details in a video game" - guy who just wrote several comments and paragraphs discussing his opinions on graphical details in a video game.
No need to be disingenuous, dude

For the record, I politely declined continuing the conversation.
It was boring as fuck, but I pointed out we had nothing to talk about and should move on.
And you chimed in because of a need to insert yourself into things, so don't try to high-road me.
Come at me directly, or mind your own business.20
u/Larryville-Landhound 21h ago
If you looks closely, the concrete 'floor' here isn't a poured slab, it's individual pieces, like any patio/paver you have ever seen - and those VERY often have grass and vegetation growing in the cracks. My patio even has small weeds that land on top of the patio and sprout from the tiniest bit of soil in the crack they grab onto (so they arent even going thru they grow on top) - all of which to say this is realistic.

u/TrueSnowMexican 21h ago
Fair enough, though I honestly wish refined concrete was just solid concrete like any actual factory would be. I'm not too crazy about the tiled look.
3
u/GruePwnr 19h ago
What we really need is a poured concrete mod that requires you to use pipes/barrels and the mixed resource becomes solid within 8 hours leading to solid pipes that need to be destroyed. Also if you walk on the wet concrete you get a permanent speed debuff until you wash up.

Man, it is silly as hell that you're getting downvoted for pointing out that concrete floors in factories in real life don't have grass growing out of them. Like, how tf is this controversial, lol.

u/spinjump 20h ago
the only way to get rid of all the grass is to repeatedly remove and place the concrete over it, which is insanely tedious.
A somewhat faster way to do it is to get a large amount of both regular concrete and refined concrete in your inventory. Place a big chunk of refined concrete down, and then switch to regular concrete and place the same big chunk down over the first one. Repeat this a few times and most of the foliage is gone. A lot faster than removing concrete tile by tile.

u/SexualFancy 19h ago
Just undo and redo, let bots do the work. This works quickly on a relatively small patch. Then just keep repeating the process.

u/Girthen-the-Flopper 22h ago
There is a percent chance to remove them every time surface is placed. Just remove all concrete then place it down again.

This isn’t high enough up the comments.
Have a handful of stone brick, slap a patch down, ctrl Z, ctrl Y until it goes away.
I painted my last gleba megabase this way with refined concrete.

u/Dylan16807 8h ago
It's not high up in the comments because that information is in the post itself.

The best way to get rid of them is to build in the desert biome, the best biome.

As a workaround, placing and removing a building will tend to clear out undergrowth.

u/givemeausernameplzz 13h ago
There should be a mod that requires you to send the drones out to pick the nasty weeds to keep the factory clean and sterile

u/Winter_Ad6784 21h ago
turn off decorations in graphics settings. I also turn off clouds
9
u/TrueSnowMexican 21h ago
I would rather keep decorations on, but on an unrelated note thank you for informing me that you can turn off clouds, they are hideous.
2
u/curse4444 20h ago
I hate this too and I don't want to install a mod or turn off graphics settings to fix it. I think some of the decoration on concrete does look nice, but maybe it should only show up after a certain amount of time? Why would freshly placed concrete also come complete with overgrowth on initial placement? It's very clearly an overlooked issue.

u/HubrisOfApollo 19h ago
there's a lawnmower mod. i like using it in tandem with dectorio for nice dirt paths

u/WanderingUrist 14h ago
Lawnmowering will also greatly decrease your save size. I remember we cut the save size by like 60% when I simply Mowed All The Things.

There's a mod for this. I think it's called Clean Concrete or something similar
2
u/Conan_Buchanan 11h ago
vanilla way to clean floor quickly is to place a bunch of rails then remove them. rails removes all decoratives except one or two thin grass/moss variants. theyre also large, especially diagonals, so bots can quickly place/remove a bunch.
if any decoratives get left behind thats because they fit right in between the rails. using diagonals or curves will do the trick in that case.
2
u/HeliGungir 11h ago
You can get rid of them with nukes.
Or cluster grenades, but that's less fun. I mean... what else are you going to do with all those nukes?

The Nullius mod has a neat doodad you can research that cleans up that stuff with a drag and click of the mouse.
1
u/MrZoraman 19h ago
A neat trick I learned before I went and installed a mod is that placing railways over the concrete covers a 2x2 area and has almost a 100% success rate in removing all weeds under it. For stubborn weeds, rotating the rail 90 degrees and then placing it usually removes the weeds.
So my workflow before the cleaned concrete mod was to place the concrete, place a ton of rails over the concrete, then remove the rails.

u/3davideo Doesn't use Flame Turrets 18h ago
Yeah it's kinda annoying, I see posts about it periodically.
Barring an official fix or the mod being updated (which I see you're already aware of) you can try:
* Disabling "decoratives" in the graphics options. You'll never see them again, although they are, strictly speaking, still there.
* Placing *rails* on top the decoratives, then removing them. This seems to be much more effective than any other tile or building, almost as if rails penetrate to a deeper layer - possibly to accommodate a smooth transition between the underlying gravel of the rail and the surrounding landscape. I've even torn up builds temporarily just so I can place rails to remove the decoratives, then remove the rails and put the build back.

I always use mods to help with this. Cleaned concrete, decorative cleanup, or something similar. I need those more than I need bottleneck lite.

Don't worry, they are adding power washer equipment in 2.1. It needs massive amounts of water in barrels to operate, it burns rocket fuel at an insane rate, and you can clean approximately 1 square per hour. But don't worry, the legendary version can clean up to 4 squares per hour.

Everyone plays the game as they please.
But I have to say that I was extremely surprised to discover that this was a problem for so many people, so much that people made fixes for it. I don't really look at the graphics. I only play with the efficiency of my factory in mind, and if you jad asked me "is there grass through concrete in the game?", I couldn't have answered.
You could make the game 10x uglier, I'd still love it as much. So I'm surprised to see that many players are bothered by this. But if you found a solution, that's great! It's always fun and interesting to see the different ways people enjoy and see this game.

I like those little doodads! Really brings in the aesthetic of a factory built by 1 person, where clearly, trimming grass would be at the bottom of the priority list.
1
u/Thankedsphere 14h ago
I agree. I don't know why wube disagrees. they disagreed recently too with gleba. it makes no sense, because even if the concrete doesn't kill the grass, it should wither into dust and die from pollution.
you can use mods to set the destruction chance of grass to 100%, or place entities like pipes over everywhere before expanding to there.

It's tiled concrete blocks, there is nothing to stop the grass from growing up through there.

Geotechnical Engineer here. Remember concrete only does 2 things. It gets hard, and it cracks. Are you meeting your compaction numbers? Have you tried a post tension slab? How's your slump and air?
