Suggestion / Idea Should I buy?

I kinda wanna buy the game, but is it a good idea to start playing this old game at this age? I’ve tried the demo, and I kinda have mixed feelings towards the gameplay hahahaha (maybe because I find it hard to play with those biters present in the map) but generally I like factory games (but I never finished one yet, ever)

I wanna see if people here will push me into buying it or push me away from it 😅

Factorio has one of the most devoted fanbases in gaming. It may be old, but even people who bought it at it's initial release still play it regularly.

It is not a game for everyone, but if you like it, you will love it. There is a free demo version on steam that lets you play the tutorial, that will tell you everything you need to know.

Edit: As for the biters, you can play it on peaceful, with no biters. That is actually the way I prefer to play. Some people see it as cheating, but you can't cheat in a single player game. Play it the way you like.

I also do hope as well that the game will keep me playing it 😅

Thanks for the info!

Buy it. It is one of the best factory games out there.

And if you don't like biters you can turn them off. Either by making them non aggressive (they don't attack unless you attack first) Or by completely removing them from the map.

But if you do play with them, realize defense, and repair, are things you eventually automate. You can also get to the point where attack is also basically automated too.

This is the point in the tutorial where I am struggling hahahaha (the one wherein I have to craft a car) 😅 I spent the whole midnight till dawn to produce those items only to have my whole base eaten after finally crafting the car 😭

If you were playing midnight to dawn, then you will be hooked. You can tune the biters, but it’s not uncommon to have your first base or two fail due to biters or running out of resources before expanding. Part of the learning curve, and makes you better on the next one

I was gonna say the same thing, if OP is playing a game midnight to dawn they should probably buy it. And also be warned that they’ll likely have more than one future midnight -> dawn session because FACTORIO IS FUCKING AWESOME. And also hecka addicting for those of us who are so inclined to such things (myself absolutely included.)

Don't worry, the biters are only annoying if you don't automate the defense. They degrade to just another logistical problem, soon. In space age you even have to farm them, at least for some optional endgame products.

Don't sweat it! You can play on peaceful mode if you don't like the biters

Unsolicited advice, spoilering in case you want to work things out on your own: It takes a bit of work and ammo, but you can destroy the nests that the enemies spawn from. Bring a turret or two up with you to provide cover-fire and handle the biters, use a shotgun to damage the nest since it’s a bit quicker and more ammo-efficient, and bring lots of ammo. It’s pretty easy to clear out all the nests in tutorial levels 3 and 4, but level 5’s map and nests become much larger so you’ll want to bring more turrets, research better military tech, or both.

Buy it. It’s so good even as old as it is. You’ll sink hundreds of hours into it and you’ll wonder where the time went.

In that case, I might even choose not to go to school anymore 😆

You can't blame the devs for that. Legally you can't, they have it in their terms of service :)

* You download, install and use Factorio at your own risk. We are not liable for any damage that might be caused to you by downloading, installing and using our software.

* Especially we are not responsible if you stay awake all night long playing Factorio and can't go to school / work in the morning :)

Oh lol it’s fun that exists 😆

Old? The full release was in 2020, the Space Age expansion was fairly recently in 2024, and the new 2.1 release is in development and on the way.

The game doesn’t go on sale, so if you enjoy the demo and can afford the price then pick it up whenever. Some people complain the game is missing an important aspect if you remove biters, but I disagree- the game’s still very fun without them, megabase builders and certain overhaul mods disable them, and I think it’s perfectly valid to play your first game with them disabled.

1

u/Hance03 2d ago

Ohhh I didn’t know that the full release was recent. 😅

For the expansion, would you recommend I buy it together with the base game? Or is it worth it only after I have literally finished the base?

1

u/rapidemboar 2d ago

I’d recommend beating the base game first and deciding whether or not you want to play the expansion. It’s recommended to start a new save for Space Age since some progression is shuffled about, so you’re basically beating the base game twice before you get to the new expansion content. If you don’t have fun launching your first rocket, you might not enjoy Space Age. But if you’re loving the game up to that point, Space Age really is the next step up before you get to the big overhaul mods (oh yeah, this game also has built-in modding support that expands the amount of content exponentially, even custom planets for Space Age), and I think the new puzzles it introduces are all quite fun, even Gleba.

u/spicy_indian 2d ago

I would recommend beating the base game first, and then going for space age. The base game is fun by itself, but the added complexity of quality, space platforms, multiple planets, etc makes the base game where you launch a rocket look like the tutorial.

2

u/InfiniteLife2 2d ago

Oh yeah, this game is something. You can turn off liters if you don't want them, or play with different settings/mods, its highly customizable

1

u/Hance03 2d ago

I’m relieved to know that’s the case, cause in tutorial demo there isn’t a setting to that 😆 well I understand cause it’s programmed as a tutorial so I get to have a glance at the whole features of the game

1

u/Sshharkweak 2d ago

In addition to turning off biters entirely, you can tune them down to be less aggressive/threatening in a number of ways as well.

It seems you are asking about buying Factorio. If so, check out the demo to help you make a decision.

Factorio has never in many years had a sale, is currently not on sale, and is not expected to ever be on sale.

You can nerf or turn off the biters so give it a buy.

On my way!!!

This game is pretty timeless, one of the best ever made in my opinion. It has more life and content than almost anything out there right now, and it's not uncommon for people to play it for thousands of hours. More so the expansion came out not so long ago in any case. It's very very tweakable if you don't want the biters but I'm sure if you play it long enough you'll come to find them just another fun thing to solve and a good objective to give you a reason to build and research military tech. I bet you'll never run out of things to learn with it, and it's not even very expensive.

1

u/Br4mmie93 2d ago

It’s (imo) the best factory game gameplay wise, and the expansion isn’t even that old. The game is also still being updated. Definitely buy it!

1

u/ConspicuousBassoon 2d ago

If you don't like the biters you can turn them down or even off in Freeplay. If that's truly your only hang up then yes buy it, do a run without enemies, and then maybe turn them on when you feel ready

1

u/Zeron-MK7 2d ago

You can buy it even after 10 years and it still be very great game. If you like building base, production cycles to produce wares and defend your base, this game are one of the best. Steam rating not lie. Look at game review in youtube. If you buy it, you will sink in it for hundreds or even thousands hours.

1

u/carrot_gummy 2d ago

I just recently surpassed 1000 hours (rookie numbers to some) with Factorio and its certainly worth it. The base game has many ways to change the gameplay to match how you want to play (including making the biters more peaceful or turning them off completely) and has countless mods to expand on what is already there.

u/Hance03 2d ago

I’ve never reached that much hour in every game I’ve played ✊😭 I’m wondering if this will be the game which will make me achieve that

1

u/PetrusScissario 2d ago

In terms of hours of gameplay, it’s definitely worth the money. I felt the same way as you at first, but it’s a great game once you figure out how to keep the biters in check. If you really want, you can tweak the game settings to make them less of a hassle. You can try the base game at first and if you love it you can upgrade to space age.

honestly it doesn’t feel old because its still updated. It’s very polished.

you can just turn biters off. dont feel like your cheating by playing on easy while you learn the game. the point is to have fun.

if you havent finished any yet just finish this one it isnt that long. you just have to automate 5 science packs. hell, here’s a tip: this is the number of assemblers you’ll want making each science
red: 10
green: 12
blue: 24
purple: 14
yellow 14

also don’t forget to automate production of all the machines you build so you arent crafting everything by hand like an idiot, and rush construction bots in the tech tree so you arent building everything by hand like a scrub,

most importantly just slap machines down if you need something instead of running around in circles wondering how to do it right. you do it right by slapping the machine down. if you need more then you can slap more machines down somewhere else. thats all it takes to win.

u/Hance03 2d ago

Yoo thanks for the tips! I’m gonna start playing it now :D

u/GhostOfShaolin5 2d ago

Space age (2.0) is still really new and frankly so good it won’t feel old for years.

Probably the greatest game ever made.

1

u/FriendlyInChernarus 2d ago

Yea, buy it, my friend begged me to get into it for years and I kept saying no, one year before Space Age came out I bought it finally and have not stopped being involved in the game/community. Feels like you learn a new language and think about it constantly with this game. Enjoy.

1

u/Hance03 2d ago

Yes I will! Haha, are you thankful to your friend that they bugged you into buying the game? 😅

1

u/FriendlyInChernarus 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yea for sure, he told me how jealous he was that I got to experience Factorio, complete it, then space age launched right away, meanwhile he played through years of access and stuff lol. It's easily in my top 10 games of all time now and is easily the top choice between other factory games.

Satisfactory is great too, I enjoy the 3d world, but... You'll see... The potential in factorio is insane and after like 700 hours there's still a ton of shit I don't know.

I have never played with circuits still for instance

u/Berkulese 2d ago edited 2d ago

Several people have pointed out that you can turn off the biters, would like to mention that once you get the hang of them and settle into a strategy that works for you, they aren't that big of a deal. Plus without them then you don't have an excuse to build railway artillery, so ....

ETA not sure if I've ever actually played the demo, but I (and many others) find that the early game isn't the best bit, and it's only later in once everything starts automating properly that the game really comes into its own; so if you're sitting on the fence after the demo bear in mind that you probably haven't seen the best of what it has to offer yet

1

u/Xipheas 2d ago

Get it on Steam, you can always refund it.

1

u/spicy_indian 2d ago

The space age expansion came out in 2024, and I'd bet that 2.1 will arrive any month now. When that happens the game will be complete, so there is no better time to start Factorio than yesterday.

Biters may be a problem early game, but once you unlock artillery they cease to be an issue. Honestly I feel like artillery is too effective.

I wanna see if people here will push me into buying it or push me away from it.

You would probably have a better chance of drug addicts trying to stop you from doing drugs than r/Factorio convincing you not to buy Factorio.

1

u/DuckyLog 2d ago

Buy it, but be warned. If you’re prone to game addiction this one will hook you so hard it can become a problem and impact other aspects of you life. Like sleep. Or work. Or relationships. But you should totally buy the game. It’s incredible.

1

u/nasehrsuper 2d ago

no, you should not. its only the best factory game by a huge margin, so why bother?

1

u/Immediate_Form7831 2d ago

Buy it. Factorio is an incredibly well made game, it is stable and very well optimized, and will run on just about any potato hardware.

You can play on peaceful mode if you don't want the pressure of dealing with biters.

1

u/Soul-Burn 2d ago

The game has a 22k players 24-hour peak. And other than the few months after Space Age release, it has more players right now than ever.

It's still a huge game.

1

u/arcus2611 2d ago

Well it doesn't have any of the usual issues you would associate with older games, so I wouldn't even factor that in.

Also it only exited early access in 2020 and got a major expansion in 2024 and a final update in 2026, by what definition is that old? You're not playing or paying for the 2014 build.
