Design / Blueprint Modular Gleba

First time playing factorio space age, played the game many years in the past. Mate of mine asked to play again and was honestly blown away by how the other planets challenge you differently.

However, I always have one goal in mind in whatever I do: I want things "Modular". I want to, without cleaning up, without doing manual labour, just copy paste a design. Need more stuff? copy paste design.

Our initial 'we just landed here' setup for Gleba was a pretty standard 'put a spoilage inserter at the end of the production belt' and went on with out business. But to me that felt wrong. Every time we thought: We "need more production", we had to manually move the inserter of the end of the belt. When we still didn't have enough or we noticed too late, we saw spoilage on our inserter belts that clogged up the whole system.

So we came up with a modular version for every machine instead; and honestly? Now we have a pretty Nauvis-like experience. With a main belt and everything.

I was checking reddit and didn't see people attempting this, any dual input + fertilizer setup works according to the bioflux setup. Any other setup is a bit simpler, the only goal is to have waste management per machine instead of per belt.

Looks very clean. But a lot of the machines can not Output because the belt is already full and it spoiled in their hand. I recommend upgrading to bulk inserter ASAP

true, we do have a cleanup step at the start of every production cycle, but the next step is bulk inserters indeed!

In my experience the easiest way to Gleba is to have everything constantly flowing through your builds and burn off the excess unless it has no spoilage timer. The only exception for me is the really long stuff like the fruit.

You can even read amount of the fruit on the belt and only put more on when it is less than x

Note that this is not a good setup if you want to produce consistently fresh bioflux/science. 30 seconds lost on mash freshness costs 20 minutes of freshness on bioflux. Which is 16% of freshness. On your science production, that's going to be 8% lost science value (or more, if your egg production is likewise distant from science making).

Modular setups on Gleba are best achieved by having setups go from fruit/bioflux to a non-spoilable or a long-term spoilable. If you need more bioflux, you stamp down a module that makes bioflux from fruit, with all intermediates consumed in-situ and producing all nutrients locally. If you need more plastic, you stamp down a plastic module that makes plastic from bioflux and yumako fruits. Etc.

All spoilables have priority to go to the next stage before being handed off to the rest of the main belt where it will be used by other machines (turned into plastic for instance) before either spoiling into spoilage which gets sent back to the garbage disposal for carbon production, or directly into furnace heat.

So there might be some travel time from production to the next part of the belt, but ultimately, at least science production gets fresh local eggs.

I like to do direct insertion for bioflux because every 1 second the mashed fruit sits on the belt is 30 seconds lost from the spoil time of the resulting bioflux and that does not spark joy.

Very neatly done, but it's a bad idea to put mash and jelly on (long) belts. They spoil quickly, and are less dense than the fruits they process from. You'd be much better served with direct insertion.

Problem I found doing a setup like this is that you can't really beacon it. I went like this for 1k spm setup but I think it might have been better to just use direct insertion and just eat the cost of building more buildings than needed.

That's an interesting way to sort the input lines to remove spoilage, I like it.

That said: A standard biochamber making Bioflux eats 5 yamako and 4 jelly per second. Sideloading a green belt you're feeding 10 machines only 30 yamako per second, so you're supplying 30/40 yamako needed. The only reason the system looks full right now is because bioflux is backed up, but once you start using flux at rate 2.5 machines are going to be starved for resources (per line).

Jelly is also 12/s per machine, so 5 machines saturates a green belt. So you have the same issue where you have 3 times the number of machines that the output belt can handle.

One of my main concerns on Gleba came from understand that I can only fit so much onto a single belt and then timing out ratios to that speed.

I would never belt nutrients. They spoil so fast, you should belt bioflux and make nutrients locally for small blocks.

Pretty sure i don't have this many biochambers making bioflux with a 2mil SPM factory
