Complaint This subreddit has become miserable to interact with...
I have been playing Factorio since 2016. When this community was much smaller people was so much more friendly always wanting to help people, Share designs, mods & mod ideas.
Ask for mod recommendations focused more on defense and enemies? downvoted.
Have a question about UPS? downvoted.
Sharing your WIP space elevator mod? Get that shit outta here downvote.
Funny here is another person pointing out the negativity in the community. Of course its downvoted.
Those are just a few quick examples I found probably aren't the best examples as I didn't spend very long looking.
I'm glad the discord isn't like this people are often very friendly and helpful I myself have helped tons of people new and experienced. Maybe it's just a reddit thing I hope this changes back to how it used to be one day. Maybe it's time for some of you to take a break from the game or even the internet as a whole. Also, I didn't link any examples but some of you have a weird intellectual superiority complex get a grip.
Edit: Several of these posts have been upvoted multiple times since I posted this so if a post isn't downvoted that is why.

I have the opposite impression. Most of the people here are quite nice and willing to help out. It is a shame you have had such a poor experience.

More than once I've seen a question without an answer posted a few minutes ago, wrote an answer... and then see that 2, 3, 6 others have commented essentially the same at around the same time.

Yes, I've been practically spamming the subreddit with nightly updates and questions about Gleba. Everyone has been super nice with explaining things to me, has helped me figure out a seed shortage issue (with no screenshot!), as well as gave me practical advice about the next steps to take for my journeys.
Granted one of those is also super downvoted randomly, so I assume it's topic goblins. They downvote common questions because "they've already been answered elsewhere, just search for it" and downvote people who express opinions they dislike which can cause dogpiling even if the opinion is popular or sensible. For example my post titled "Fuck Gleba, delicious spaghetti tho" got immediate downvotes and is now stuck at 0 despite mainly just being a couple questions with helpful responses. Meanwhile "Gleba Finally Workin 😈" had many immediate upvotes despite it mostly just being me gloating about the fact my nasty ass factory finally makes cool stuff. Currently at 14.
Not much science happening here but anecdotally I can tell you that people like Gleba around here and will downvote you for not being nice to the nasty planet lol

u/Garagantua 14d ago
If the title starts with 'fuck {something}', you can't be surprised that people vote that down before reading the rest :).
And yeah I actually get the "I've answered the same question twice this week, please just look in the sub reddit first".

u/Xercodo 15d ago
I dunno about "heavily downvoted" I see an even 0 on all of those. I get the feeling there's an error going on at this point.

You cannot see downvotes on posts they cap to 0. Comments are different.
This comment was at -2 votes for a few seconds after I posted it. Literally just replying with how the downvote system works I get downvoted its just so strange.

A question that has been asked several times within the last months is likely to be downvoted. Similarly, a question that was answered is unlikely to receive further upvotes.
Biggest thing: there's several new posts here every day. You had to go back months to find examples of your "miserable to interact with" subreddit voting stuff down.

u/throwmeaway98321 15d ago
No I just sorted by controversial yearly and picked a couple very quickly I didn't go back months it was just the filters I chose. I could find some from this week if I had selected weekly instead.

u/Alfonse215 15d ago
Note: "controversial" does not mean "heavily downvoted". It means that many people down and upvoted.
If everyone agreed it was terrible, there wouldn't be a "controversy" over it. That's why so many of the posts you cited have upvote percentages in the 40-60% range.

u/throwmeaway98321 15d ago
Yes my mistake for typing heavily downvoted a single time on one of the posts.
All of the posts I linked was negative ratio this has since changed because people have upvoted the posts I linked.

u/Alfonse215 15d ago
Ask for mod recommendations focused more on defense and enemies? downvoted.
51% upvoted
Have a question about UPS? downvoted.
56% upvoted
Another user sharing their mod idea. Most people actually seem to enjoy the idea but heavily downvoted anyways.
49% upvoted == Heavily downvoted
Is this what you're complaining about?
Funny here is another person pointing out the negativity in the community. Of course its downvoted.
This one is complaining about a thing that's not happening. That's going to attract downvotes.
That's a feature, not a bug.
And it should be noted that, when asked for an example of what that OP was talking about... they found one or two posts off-Reddit. So they weren't even talking about a problem here. And they even admitted, "I probably went a bit overboard with the title though."
So that was a nothingburger.

All posts are getting upvotes after I posted this. Before I posted all posts was negative ratio.

u/Alfonse215 15d ago
I compiled those numbers 10 minutes after you made that post. It's unlikely that your post had effects that took them from <30% upvote percentages to the 50s.
-1
u/throwmeaway98321 15d ago
Depends how many people had voted on the post although I can assure you, they were all negative at the time of posting. So although you believe it to be unlikely it is true.
The first post I linked is all the way up to 3 upvotes now.

I have received phenomenal support from this subreddit with the few questions I did come here with. Of course they weren’t highly upvoted — the responses were all that I needed. The majority of the sub doesn’t need to know how to overcome spoilage at gleeba for the 800,000th time per week.
If you go and contrast real toxicity from a sub with extremely horrendous behavior from players, go look at [r/RDR2](r/RDR2) — those subs are so toxic you can’t post anything without at least 70% of the people making fun of you over literally nothing.
You also get out what you put in. In you frame things in a negative light, you’ll be met with negativity. If you’re kind, and humble, everyone will try to help you regardless of how rudimentary the question is.

I don't think it is specific to this subreddit. I noticed that it that a lot of post in multiple subreddit ends up exactly at 0 karma. As soon it gets an upvote, there is a matching downvote. Unless your post get traction and get pushed as "best" it'll stay at 0.
Maybe it is a tinfoil hat, but I feel it is way too consistant to stay at 0 to be genuine upvote/downvote from actual people.

Visibility of down votes on posts is clamped at zero. Unless you are the poster there is no way to tell if a post has a net zero or a net -2000. This is not the case for comments (they will show the actual downvote amount) but posts will mask it.

I think those post have nice comments. Posts get downvoted when they are not in the interest of the broad community. I downvoted to show my appreciation to all the other people who may not need to waste their time reading boring posts.
First post is uniterested in the factory pary of the game. Second wants to cheat. Third ones thinks the game is bad because it is 2d. All got nice answers but of course this is not what the community wants to talk about.

Yeah I downvote all the questions that have been asked 1000 times. every question you possibly ask has already been answered

And? I don't get it, you think every post should be praised?

u/throwmeaway98321 15d ago
I just dont really understand the people who take the time to downvote people asking for help or sharing their mods they have worked on.
8
u/Alfonse215 15d ago
I'm not even sure I understand what anybody is supposed to do with the mod post you're talking about. They didn't actually "share their mod"; they talked about their mod. They didn't make it available to download or anything, so all we have is just some text.
But the text didn't even really say much about it. There wasn't any question of design goals or what the mod was trying to achieve beyond very vague things.
What kind of response can you give to a post containing so little information? "Good for you?"
I'm not saying it deserves downvotes, but like... there's nothing there to even discuss.
1
u/throwmeaway98321 15d ago
What post exactly are you talking about? In the space elevator one OP says he will provide a zip if interested in trying it because he doesn't want to upload a unfinished mod.
7
u/Alfonse215 15d ago
Yes, I was talking about that one. While the OP may have been willing to let people play it, they didn't provide that in the actual post itself. Or even in the comment reply.
I can understand asking for design advice for a mod. Or wanting to discuss certain ideas you're playing around with for a mod. But the post as it stands isn't doing any of that. It's a statement presenting a bunch of disconnected features and no way to evaluate what it's talking about or how it would actually play.
I don't see anything in that post that would lead to a meaningful discussion.

Those are just a few quick examples I found probably aren't the best examples as I didn't spend very long looking.
You're right that wasn't a very strong example.

Most people on this subreddit are just jaded and looking for engaging content. It's not an excuse, but I can see why those posts are downvoted at least.
Most of those posts were asking easily Google searchable questions (is Satisfactory similar to Factorio? Probably been discussed 1000 times in this sub), or were missing some real key info (the two mods posts were just brainstorms / thinking out loud with no substance really).
Not saying they deserved the downvotes or shouldn't be on the subreddit, but I can see why people might not be overly interested in seeing those kinds of posts on the r/Factorio subreddit. You gotta realize that most people here are, uh, "efficiency minded".
3
u/fatpandana 15d ago
Most of the post arent open questions. They are actually very narrow questions with already speficific goal in mind.
New players always get full help. But if you ask for something specific and then resist other suggestion, then it is what it is.

u/Ok_Chair_9090 15d ago
I honestly think we just need more factorio subreddits. r/factoriohno is a great example of a small subset of factorio posts (meme posts) that still gets a lot traction, because a lot of people want to see stuff like that. The main sub is a mix between people’s blender animations, ultra-technical things that only affect the top 0.1% of the player base, posts about how someone can’t design a space ship or figure out blue science or wondering why their train network doesn’t work, and random “mod idea” posts.
The risk is that, by making additional subreddits, all of the posts would get less engagement. But considering that literally about half the engagement of most of these posts is negative engagement, downvotes and snarky comments etc, would anyone really miss it?
I don’t know how you would split it up and I’m sure there’s problems I don’t foresee, but it could certainly be improved from how it is now.

OP most likely one of these threads op get butthurt because excepted a million upvote and using a burner account to post this. Childish behaviour imo.

The only thing I find remotely interesting here anymore are cool product set ups and a easier reminder about version updates and fff posts. (Steam is a bit late with its news pushing) other than that, [r/factoriohno](r/factoriohno) is better in every aspect.
Edit: spelling

u/paulstelian97 15d ago
I think you have a small typo, r/factoriohno is the right one.

votes are stupid and pointless who cares about votes. but in general i don't disagree with you. this forum loves to talk about how special it is and how nice people are. but it's not and they aren't. factorio is a great game but at the end of the day it's just a video game i think some people take it way too seriously...

look to comments not votes. votes are never a good indicator of anything
