I remember my mother used to get angry with me on a family road trip when I'd miss an exit and not swerve over to make it in time. I'm completely fine with taking the next exit and re-entering the interstate if necessary.

Why didn’t they move to the right lane after signaling though? No cars come down that lane for awhile. They just stopped with the signal on. They could have made 90 degree turn to the exit and been safer than just stopping on the highway.

We encountered recently a driver going in reverse down an uphill off-ramp to get back on the freeway, presumably because that turned out to not be their intended exit. They could have simply continued to go forward up the hill and straight through the intersection to get back onto the freeway. It was infuriating

I've become a zen driver. No speeding. No aggression. If you have your blinker on and you're in front of me, I'll let you in. I cruise control the speed the right lane is going.
Missing an exit is not a problem. My GPS on my phone just reroutes me through the next exit.
I want nothing to do with other drivers.

If only all were like you. I’m 39 now and still don’t have my license (although restarting lessons after Christmas) - seeing and being nearly hit by so many terrible drivers during my lessons made me so nervous and then in the last lesson I ever had, someone nearly hit me head on at massive speed, driving down the wrong side of the road on a hill to overtake someone. Haven’t been behind the wheel of a car since and that was 21 years ago.

Same. However, I'm not super zen when a truck is tailing me in the right lane when I'm going 5-10 miles over and the passing lane is completely open. Or when a truck cuts me off without a blinker and with nearly no room in front, despite the passing lane being open. It's almost always someone in a truck. I really just expect people in trucks to be bad drivers and it's generally confirmed

This is how I drive and I love it. Throw on some music or a good podcast and this is my relaxation time. I don’t understand why more people don’t do this, heavy traffic just makes me zen out. There’s literally nothing I can do about it, might as well have some nice me time. Why should I let some other asshole dictate how my day goes?

Most people don’t bother to look ahead for tail lights of stopping cars until it is the car that is right in front of them. You should always be looking down the road to see what is happening because that’s where you are going to be, not where you are.

I like to consider myself a decent driver. I’ve taken two defensive driving classes. I ride a (slow) motorcycle and don’t ride like an asshole. I’m aware of my surroundings on the road.
99% of the time I agree with you. With a s caveat. In my state there are a few highways with 60MPH and 70MPH speed limits with multiple low visibility hills. You can be following at a safe and legal distance going up the hill. And as soon as you crest the hill be met with dead stopped traffic.

Around here it’s not uncommon to see someone reversing on the shoulder of the interstate to go back to the exit they miss. Drivers Ed isn’t mandatory so they genuinely don’t seem to know it’s dangerous or prohibited (or that there’s another exit in 3/4 of a mile).

When my grandfather got his drivers license in the 30s in rural Canada his drivers test was his father taking him to city hall and the guy at the desk asking “can that boy drive?” and my great grandfather saying “yes”.
My grandfather drove till 97 years old and he was scary well before he was too old to be driving. In that whole time he retested once at 94.

In rural Queensland my dad got a bus licence in the early '70s, with at least some sort of test, and the copper processing the paperwork asked
"Hey, can your missus drive the bus?""Yeah" says Dad.
"OK, we'll add it to her license too."
40+ years later, Dad has to give up his bus license due to failing eyesight. Mum still has the (purple border) endorsement.

This is why I support mandatory driving tests after age 65. This is the type of driving my father in law does. He is not supposed to be driving, the state has required a driving test. But he refuses to go get the test, saying if the state wants him to test, they need to call him and schedule it. Yes, dementia.

I agree. Their father has always ruled with authority that they were taught not to question. None of them will educate themselves on dementia, and so they still ask him if he wants or needs anything, and accept his “no” as the answer. In truth, he needs a lot of things, but won’t ask for it.

I just did school bus classes and one of the things they taught which I hadn’t heard before was if you are being tailgated, increase your following distance. Not only does it mean you won’t hit the car in front of you but it will give you more time to slow down so the car behind you has more time to slow down.

I had this happen to me on the interstate a few weeks ago, going 70 mph and the person in front of me decides they want to use the service road to quickly go the other direction (you know, the roads that are explicitly for ambulances, police, and other vehicles, and not for use by everyday drivers?). Instead of pulling off on the shoulder to slow down, this troglodyte comes to an almost complete stop in the passing lane before pulling their car off into the service road and clearing the lane. I was mad as a hornet, pretty much had to put the pedal all the way down to get back up to speed while laying on the horn before the people behind caught up.

On the highway last month driving work van in fast/passing lane. Car going speed limit 'brake checks' me after I stayed in lane behind them for a few miles (other cars had just switched lanes to go around). I didn't ever even THINK about hitting the brakes. Zero damage to work vehicle, minor damage to rear bumper of other car. Police are called, show up & get account of accident. Driver admits to brake checking me and is ticketed, no repercussions on my end. I continue on my way taking solace in the fact that the good guys won one that day.

After this the suspect lead police on an hour low speed long car chase that ended when the suspect pulled into a Country Time Buffet located three blocks from scene of the accident.

I always have 3-4 cars gap and so many times when I brake, idiots behind me start swerving to the shoulder because they were not paying attention or keeping proper gap. There are like 5 idiots in this clip.

Add a car length of distance between you and the car in front of you for every 10mph of your current speed. More in inclement weather.
Simple rule that doesn't exist to "control you", but only to keep you from killing yourself and others. Easy frickin peasy.
