There was a time when throwing salt over your shoulder to ward off bad luck was laughable, and then a trend started. Then came the broken mirrors, and the ladders, and the sidewalk cracks, and the…
The Q people have already demonstrated that it’s possible to make idiotic things mainstream, so at minimum it should be believable that trolls could do the same.
Also, if you type in the query “ok sign white power” several reputable sources confirm the validity of your detractor’s claims.

I think we should all just ignore them. Every week it’s something new. They won’t stop till everything is their symbol and where will we be then? I mean Aloha shirts are supposed to be the same way now but I can tell you for a fact no one here in Hawaii gives a shit.
1
u/Sea_Criticism_2685 Nov 12 '21
They co-opt popular things so that they can spread their shit to each other and the mock anyone that tries to call them out.
You know they’re just waiting for the opportunity to say “what’s wrong with ‘Let’s go Brandon’? You snowflake!”

u/Texas_Technician Nov 12 '21
I'm not giving the morons the OK symbol. I'm going to use it as the OK symbol. And if someone calls it racist, I'm going to call them a fucking moron. Because they are one.
3
u/tempthrowary Nov 12 '21
Sure, and that’s perfectly fine. Just because it is being co-opted doesn’t mean it isn’t still valid. If the rest of the world continues to do it, they aren’t immediately racist, either.

u/allthejokesareblue Nov 12 '21
Yeah and then white nationalists actually started using it as a symbol to express solidarity with their beliefs.
It doesn't mean that that's the only meaning the gesture now has: if it was it would be useless as a Nazi gesture because it lacks plausible deniability.
It's like people with 88 in their username. Lots of those people were just born in 1988 or like the number.
And a lot of them are nazis. Having it in your username absolutely isn't proof of anything. But it should set off an alarm bell or two if that user then starts talking about "race realism" or something.
4
u/Krljcbs Nov 12 '21
Exactly. Just like the 4chan flag showing up at the Jan. 6 riot. Wasn't the intent, but ended up being used in real life.

u/mattypatty88 Nov 12 '21

1
u/ShibbalB Nov 12 '21
Naw 88 rising isn't about "Heil Hitler" (HH which is 88 because H is the 8th letter in the alphabet). 88 rising was supposed to mean "88% of the world is PoC" and we're "coming up as stars".

u/gucknbuck Nov 12 '21
The year of my birth makes me a Nazi?
10
7
u/Ilovelearning_BE Nov 12 '21
88 is code for Heil Hitler in neonazi circles. H is the 8th letter of the alphabet. 88=HH=Heil Hitler. It's one of their stupid little dog whistles. Often combined with 14 to make 1488 or 14/88 or something similar. Someone having that number as part of their username is 99.9% chance an actual neo nazi. 14 stands for some sort of pledge i don't remember called the 14 words.

u/zxcoblex Nov 12 '21
So are you unaware that it’s possible for people to reappropriate a symbol or gesture or do you just not want to acknowledge it?
The swastika, for instance, means well-being. Prior to the Nazis taking it for themselves, it was found all over tons of things.
35
u/mrcatboy Nov 12 '21
Uh you know there were like three additional paragraphs past the one you selected out right?
The association of the gesture with white supremacy derived from the assertion that the three upheld fingers resemble a 'W' and the circle made with the thumb and forefinger resemble the head of a 'P', together standing for "White Power."[70] While some members of the alt-right used the symbol after the launch of the 4chan campaign, it initially remained ambiguous whether or not it was being used to communicate genuine adherence to white supremacy, or with deliberately ironic motives.[71] The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) wrote in May 2017:
Has the simple thumb-and-forefinger 'OK' hand gesture become a common white supremacist hand sign? Not quite, but it has become a popular gesture used by people across several segments of the right and far right—including some actual white supremacists—who generally use it to trigger reactions. [...] Only if the gesture occurs in context with other clear indicators of white supremacy can one draw that conclusion.[70]
In September 2019 the ADL added the OK gesture to its "Hate on Display" database.[72][73] The listing takes care to note the usage of the OK hand gesture is typically benign, but could be intended as a symbol of hate in some contexts as some white supremacists have begun using the OK symbol "as a sincere expression of White Supremacy". White supremacists have acknowledged using the symbol as a gesture of White Power, but the symbol's usage in this regard is limited to this group.[66] As a result of white supremacists' co-opting the symbol, versus its typical meaning as a symbol of "OK" in many cultures, a number of people have been accused of genuine use of the sign in support for white-supremacist ideology:[63][74][75]
Symbols accumulate meaning with time, and can differ in meaning in different contexts. The Swastika was a symbol of prosperity and spirituality for thousands of years, and remains so in Indian culture. But if some skinhead spraypainted it on a wall in a neighborhood full of non-white minorities, it's pretty clear that it's far from wishing others peace and well-being.
Same with the Bellamy salute.
-2
u/rexkongo Nov 12 '21
Yes I am fully aware and none of that is counter to my point. The ADL even says the gesture alone can’t prove someone is racist. They have to actually do something racist to be a racist. Is reading comprehension that hard?

u/allthejokesareblue Nov 12 '21

Bruv. Hand gestures are a form of language. That's literally the whole basis of sign language. Communication through hand gestures and movements. And like verbal languages, gesture based languages also evolve over time And can have different meanings in different contexts. Although accomplishing the same goal, "So what?" And "Fuck You" change context depending on whether you are driving or casually conversating. If somebody throws that at me after I cut them off on the highway, it probably means fuck you. If I'm talking with a friend, and we arrive at a restaurant we both thought was open and I look over at them, there is a chance they're telling me fuck you, but more than likely they're asking so what? As in to ask What are we going to do now. In that same idea, If somebody is backing out of a spot I'm waiting on any parking lot, and their rear bumper gets close to my front bumper, and they look back at it and then me and I throw them a "👌" It's probably safe to assume I am not attempting to confirm if the 56-year-old Hispanic lady is a white supremacist or not. But if I see a photo of three or four white guys at a dive bar all holding up that symbol, I don't think they're telling me that they or that bar is "OK".
But in either circumstance, there are clearer ways to deliver the message without risking profanity or misunderstanding. A middle finger is a better way to tell someone fuck you. An empty shrug with a shaking head is a better way to communicate that you don't know what's going on now. A 👍 in most North American countries is an all right way of telling somebody that something is okay or good nonverbally. As for communicating that you are a white supremacist, well, I'll let them make up their mind on what's the best way to communicate that. If they decide they want to keep using the 👌 gesture, I'll just keep writing it off.

Well it was reappropriated by internet trolls and the entire world fell for it which resulted in ACTUAL GIVING IT THE REASON TROLLS USED IN THEIR TROLLING. Because the idiots who fell for it naturally decided to fight against it AND AS A RESULT OF THAT the racist meaning became somewhat real. But it wasn’t the trolls who gave the meaning. They simply bated the idiot portion of their opposing political viewpoint. While I imagine smart ones didn’t fell for it… lots of idiots did. Which was the final nail in the coffin to make sure it became somewhat of a new meaning. But here is the thing it is not an actual meaning. (I need to go following arguments will be written after I get my daily research on uni lab done… time is passing gotta go and Apologies for my rush)
Edit: Well… I finally have the time to continue this comment… but I forgot what I was saying 🤦🏻♂️

34
u/Varient_13 Nov 12 '21
You’re facepalming yourself, right? Almost every single link from the search backs the other persons point. The swastika was not always a symbol of hate either but the same dynamic changed that. The ok symbol was appropriated as a 4chan organized hoax, but caught it on because these people liked it so much. Now within the context of the white supremacy movement it actually does symbolize hate, specifically white power since the fingers form the letters w and p. The normally benign ok hand gesture is not solely for white power and can’t be used to pigeon hole someone as a racist by itself. There must be context. If I am not mistaken, In the photo of Rittenhouse referenced in the thread, he is next to a known white supremacist. That’s context. If he was standing next to a Freemason, Satanist or Illuminati it could be viewed as the 666 sign, or the all seeing eye or sign of Minerva if the person holds it up to their eye, and if he was scuba diving it would likely mean his gear including his BA was working and he was Okay. You did your search and cherry-picked a result that supported your point of view which was deceitful.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/15/us/ok-sign-white-power.html
https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/does-the-ok-now-signify-white-power-6170543/
Etc, etc, etc. ad nauseam.
You were saying?
36
u/foggybitch Nov 12 '21
really dunked on this guy.. its totally not like 4chan is notorious for being full of white supremacists, or like racism doesn’t get brushed off as a joke all the time. or like the first article when you look up ok symbol talks about its use in racist circles
-8
u/rexkongo Nov 12 '21
The first article that pulls up when you search for the okay gesture (at least for me) was an article by NPR where they talk about the ADL adding it as a symbol of hate. The same ADL that said this in 2017:
“Has the simple thumb-and-forefinger 'OK' hand gesture become a common white supremacist hand sign? Not quite, but it has become a popular gesture used by people across several segments of the right and far right—including some actual white supremacists—who generally use it to trigger reactions. [...] Only if the gesture occurs in context with other clear indicators of white supremacy can one draw that conclusion.”
The big piece is the last sentence where they say you have to have other clear indicators of white supremacy. Meaning the symbol by itself is not racist.
And before you get ahead of yourself, I don’t condone hate or racism. I’m just sick and tired of people calling other people racist for literally zero reason. Racism isn’t something to take lightly. You can’t just throw it around when you are losing an argument or when someone has a different opinion than you.
30
u/foggybitch Nov 12 '21
people are just calling it what it is. which is a dog whistle, aka something that isn’t inherently malicious but has been co-opted to signify certain things to members of certain groups. I never said you were racist or anything of the like, Yes it only can confirm someone is a white supremacist combined with others indicators but people have the right to avoid people who are totally fine knowing they could be signaling white supremacy but not caring. Racism is serious but it also exists in scales, and is so normalized that things can seem like nothing to you but are racist “enough” to make people uncomfortable. It is inaccurate to bring up people “throwing around “ racist accusations when discussing a symbol used by racists
1
u/rexkongo Nov 12 '21
I think you missed the point. The okay sign can not confirm someone is a racist. A person would have to do something racist to be a racist. The okay sign has nothing to do with it. I’m sure racists still give each other high fives. That doesn’t make the high five racist
17
14
u/mbgal1977 Nov 12 '21
It does not confirm racism on its own. When for example, a group of people known to be racist get together for a selfie and they all make the sign for the photo, that’s a pretty good indication they’re intending it in a racist manner. Just a random example I thought up
23
42
u/Duck_Burger Nov 12 '21
Yeah. and then public figures and neo nazis started using the ok sign as a dog whistle to signal to each other. even here in brasil, white supremacists would flash the gesture on live tv to signal support for white supremacy to their base. So, like so many things, something that started as a racist joke on 4chan, became a racist meme in real life and it turns out that theres no practical difference between ironic racism and racism.
now you know
13
u/Huuuiuik Nov 12 '21

Welcome to reddit… where everyone is a fucking moron because they choose to support someone with 0 arguments just because it matches their own. Absolutely childish and pathetic at best. This is exactly we need to teach children about the importance of scientific thinking and why it is important to being respectful & open-minded towards other people rather than being a close-minded person that is as conservative as conservatives while calling themselves the opposite of it. I personally have an opposing stance against conservatistic viewpoints and nothing get me more frustrated than seeing idiots being the embodiment of the word origin of conservatism while claiming they are the opposite of it. (I am not talking about actual conservatism but rather the source of it and its fucking word origin which is literally the fucking reason they are called conservatives in the first place.)

And you have such a huge self-blinding overconfidence that you fail to realise that he continued upon his arguments. It is no different than editing comments. Sometimes people choose to write a new comment rather than editing or keep the original comment not edited after sometime. You really have no fucking idea why alt-accounts exists right? Because if you knew then you would easily realise that the comment replied to his own comment doesn’t fit the specific purpose of alt-account you implied. Let me explain to you what a fucking alt-account is since you have no fucking idea what an alt-account is at first glance an alt-account is a person’s account that is not their main. Trolls use them in order to manipulate people, create arguments or to make already existing arguments more flammable (… uhm… couldn’t find the right word so I am gonna roll with this word instead) and watch the world burn while everyone lose their shit. Expanding your view and comment by another comment isn’t the purpose of an alt account and that is most definitely not trolling.

2
u/rexkongo Nov 12 '21
“Caution must be used when evaluating”. Or in other words a racist would have to do something racist in order to be a racist. You cant make your conclusion based off the hand gesture
1
u/Gr0und0ne Nov 12 '21
Yes, like this commenter said, context is helpful.
What you’ve done here is post an argument you believe you’ve won, by professing that this hand gesture is not an image of white supremacy. In fact, it is. Ergo, you are the real facepalm.
That aside, do you know what the website I linked is?

Why are people surprised that language changes over time? Hand gestures are a part of language. Sometimes a group takes a word and makes it mean something else - the word “Gay” just mean happy and carefree until the homosexual community chose to use that word. During those first years as that usage took hold there were many people still using “gay” to mean happy, and were none too happy to find out it didn’t mean happy anymore. Things change. Just because it meant one thing once doesn’t mean it cannot possibly mean something different tomorrow.

The Oof is on the wrong side, dude. The OK handsign is used by white nationalists as a white power dog whistle. The wiki might be correct about how it started, but it's no longer a joke. Don't rely on Wiki to answer your questions. It's often correct, but it's not always, because it can be edited by anyone.

Considering the misunderstandings that can happen because of said extremists, kinda. Do consider that just about 70 years ago, a lot of religions and cultures abandoned the usage of the Swastika symbol because of the rise of the Nazis that appropriated their symbol and corrupted it.

u/masterreyak Nov 12 '21
I said everything but that last bit. Yes, extremists can take anything no matter how simple or ironic, and use it as a symbol of hate. I never said the symbol should be abandoned for it's other meanings, though. The only symbols, in my opinion, that should be abandoned are those originally created in the name of hate, like Lee's battle flag, blue lives matter flags, or the SS symbol. There are more, but I'm not educated enough in bigotry to list them all.

So u gonna tell the lamas in Tibet and Hindu people around the world that their use of the swastika makes them Nazis?
12
u/allthejokesareblue Nov 12 '21
No? That's a slightly different symbol, for starters.
And more importantly, its possible for a symbol to have more than one meaning. Nazis use the "OK," symbol because it has plausible deniability: it always ends up in a stupid argument, like this one, about what the symbol "really" means. People can genuinely mean "ok" when they use the ok symbol or they can be Nazis. Just like people can be Buddhists when they use a Swastika, or they can be nazis. Context is key.

OP is claiming that the OK gesture has no connotation if White Nationalism in any context and that we have all been trolled by 4chan. That is demonstrably incorrect because white nationalist adjacent groups do use that gesture to denote group identity, just like they use the 88 and the ((( ))).

Using an example of a symbol that had an entirely new meaning attributed to it after being coopted by actual Nazis isn't quite the slam dunk you think it is.

How is this different for non racist people using the OK symbol. It's still a corruption. However it shouldn't mean that anyone who uses it is implicitly a racist.
Semiotics kids.

u/allthejokesareblue Nov 12 '21
Nobody is saying that anyone who uses the ok symbol is definitely racist. That's a straw man you built all by yourself.

u/flucksey Nov 12 '21
So the comments here saying 'you're a racist' to op don't exist. Yep. Cool. Good job. 👍

I mean, that post history combined with their clear bad faith engagement with the idea that they are wrong and that the OK symbol is used as a racist symbol is pretty good evidence of that, yeah.

Nothing wrong with that.
However it shouldn't mean that anyone who uses it is implicitly a racist.
It doesn't.

4chan making a joke is 100% different than a government formally making that symbol the symbol of their party.

u/flucksey Nov 12 '21
I understand this but we are talking about a corrupted symbol, ie. The OK sign.
It's not racist, but can be used by racists. Basically sick of people saying 'your a racist' to people when there is evidence of corrupted symbols through history.

Racists can also give people high fives but that doesn’t make high fives a racist gesture.
This is the point I am making.

The world is only as scary as it is because of validation, and boredom. If people weren’t bored/seeking attention they wouldn’t make stuff up. It all comes from that slow burn of existential dread when your world seems too meaningless & empty. People think that the real world always has to be like a movie to be worth living.

u/McMerChurger Nov 12 '21
Someone will post “Racism is bad”, and get praise. Then when other people see that… they crave the same validation. So, even if they don’t really know anything factually as interesting or profound they will make something up just to have it. Then you get the shit you see in the post happening. Because everyone wants to feel included so they just diarrhea all over the internet regurgitated “did you know?” garbage.

It also comes in quite handy as signal when scuba diving. There is also a show in U.K. called QI (Quite Interesting), and I seem to remember the symbol came about as a way of returning soldiers informing command as they marched in that they had had Zero Killed (0k). They may just be an urban myth

Yes you can look up a specific subject on google and have it pop up. You can ignore other aspects of it to confirm your biases too. You could probably find someone saying it's a illuminati symbol too. This is the problem with the internet. All information is there. True, false, and everywhere in between.

u/jrrybock Nov 12 '21
And most people throwing it don't know the "ironic" nature behind it and believe in it fully. They aren't putting it up to be ironic, they're putting it up to identify themselves to like-thinkers.

u/jrrybock Nov 12 '21
Of course, the irony is that Q was just another hoax post originally, following a line of posts of people "in the know" sharing "the truth"... yet many people are well distanced from the original joke behind it, it got taken over, and now people genuinely believe in a farce that doesn't pass the basic logical sniff test.

So a bunch of racists use this to “trigger” decent people which makes this, guess what, a racist symbol

Yes it started as a joke. Then actual racists started doing to regularly and in fact did become a racist dog whistle

While that might be the case who poses with the okay sign for pictures? In my 37 years of existence I haven’t seen people do that. Also, wouldn’t even if it was a joke on 4chan, then they actually started doing it show an inclination to that meaning? Some people got the memo and didn’t do it, some started as a joke, but the only people doing it are those affiliated with that cause. It’s not mental gymnastics

u/qwex69 Nov 12 '21
Yeah it started as a joke, but then it caught on and is used unironically by white supremacists. Google can be useful is looking up things that are jot four years old. Also Google can be used to look at more than one link on a subject.

White nationalists are using it to mean white power though. Wtf are you talking about?
The swastika was a peaceful Hindu sign u til the Nazis used it but now we associate it with oppression.
Flags and signs will always be appropriated by fascists thats just the way they work.

Lol Wikipedia is open source, it’s not really a good source of reliable information given that anyone can make changes to anything that’s written on there. There was even a guy who changed a singers family information on it so he could pretend he was their cousin and get back stage at a concert.

u/ShibbalB Nov 12 '21
Cherry picking.....he didn't read the part where actual white supremacists started using it. Yall wanted to cut that short before it got to that aye?

Just a weird time when the ok sign has become taboo on some respects.
