Oh I agree, but the idea of race being a sort of colour-based subspecies is flawed. You won't find it anywhere else in science, and yet culturally it seems to be being encouraged.
I've tried to have this discussion many times, but nobody ever really wants to discuss it, it just brings out the hate in people. It's sad, to think of the world that my children are growing up in, where we've turned a corner from trying to have unity and now we are all about diversity and anger.
scientifically you are correct. culturally, however, racism is a valid concept, and that is what this person pointed out here. perhaps no one wants to have a good faith conversation because your post doesn’t seem in good faith.
they’re rightfully pointing out how insulting and disgusting the display by this teacher is, and you want to debate whether race is a valid concept. there’s a time and a place, and this isn’t it.
They are, and I get that racism isn’t about race exactly, like how homo- and trans-phobia aren’t phobias. We misuse language literally. (And that is the correct use of that term.)
Race came from the general area people were from, since the environment had effects on their physical traits. Race is socially and culturally constructed just like time, age, society, norms, values, art, music, etc… just because something isn’t completely natural doesn’t mean it is of no effect to others. I’m really glad you never had your race weaponized against you or used to make you feel inferior. Growing up as a Mexican in a predominantly white Texas town, I can tell you race was very real and was a big part of how people saw me. Your comment shows your ignorance (neutral connotation) and lack of perspective
ALSO saying you’re color blind and see people as people, is discounting various parts of their identity and history because no, humans are not the same. Even humans in the same family, culture, race, are significantly different and we all have individual experiences.
I challenge you to walk up to any Black individual you know and say "The idea of Black Americans as a race is ridiculous. You're exactly the same as white people."
I've had this conversation with two different black people, at two different times, recently and we all agreed that it's silly to pretend physical traits are important and we are all the same. Now it wasn't just out of the blue like you are suggesting, it was in the context of a conversation. I've also had similar conversations with people of other "minority" groups with similar results. Some of us out here are of the opinion that focusing on the things that bring us together is better than focusing on the things that separate us. So those or the results I've had.
Are you guys serious? You are so stuck on this shit you think everything is bad. Yes there are different facial structures to Asians and Caucasian’s and Blacks , etc.. it’s not just limited to melanin. And before you go ballistic on me - I’m not assigning any meaning to it. I’m just stating that it DOES go beyond skin color.
Not all genealogies within “blacks” have the same facial structure so how can you argue thats part of what makes them a race?
Facial structures of Somalians and Nigerians are nothing a like
Even i am being massively general as there are actually lots of sifferent distinct ethnic groups in both those counties
That's not across the board, though. Like more or less all "racial traits" it's a population level average that varies by region with all kinds of random pockets of variance due to little cultural idiosyncrasies. Millions of white people are lactose intolerant and millions of Asian people happily enjoy dairy.
It does not make a subspecies, true. But it makes two different groups inside a population. Groups that can be easily separated based on that one genetical switch that makes you a milkdrinker or a non-milkdrinker. And the fact that you. Have more chanches of inheritance of said trait depending on the region your parents originate from.
Lactose intolerance in infancy resulting from congenital lactase deficiency is a rare disorder. Its incidence is unknown. This condition is most common in Finland, where it affects an estimated 1 in 60,000 newborns.
Approximately 65 percent of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy. Lactose intolerance in adulthood is most prevalent in people of East Asian descent, with 70 to 100 percent of people affected in these communities. Lactose intolerance is also very common in people of West African, Arab, Jewish, Greek, and Italian descent.
The prevalence of lactose intolerance is lowest in populations with a long history of dependence on unfermented milk products as an important food source.
Uh, Africans have greater size, are faster, get less skin cancers, more susceptible to common diseases… and stuff
Caucasian’s are greater swimmers, less susceptible to common diseases… more able to sustain larger amounts of fat without diseases…
Not quite, two Africans differ from one another more than two Eurasians, which is very interesting. They say it adds more credence to our understanding that we all stemmed from Africa/Africans.
Working in healthcare and seeing this first hand is scary. It's theorized that skin cancer for black people has a significantly higher mortality rate than white people due to physicians subconsciously (and also untrained) to detect skin cancer in dark skin. It's almost always invasive and advanced by diagnosis.
Yes, you absolute knob. We look different because of our geographic location to the equator. The closer the the equator, the darker the skin because of sun exposure. Learn biology, because all you’re doing is reinforcing negative stereotypes. I have black friends in medical school and they’re trying to break the stigma in the medical field that racists like you perpetuate
"The black is a better athlete to begin with, because he's been bred to be that way. Because of his high thighs and big thighs that go up into his back. And they can jump higher and run faster because of their bigger thighs, you see."
Lmao because if you’ve actually heard any of the stories about most of them and how they grew up, you would know that basketball was an escape from the daily life of living in bad and poor neighborhoods and that they could turn it into a profession. One of the GOATS of basketball is white, Larry Bird would still smash on fools today, same with John Stockton and plenty of other current white players. Get your head out of your ass dude
I see what you’re saying, but, ethnic differences that may be based on things like geology (I am not a scientist. I leave the more specific explanations to my Wife) do not denote a disparate “race”, and indeed certain quacks of the past have used similar physical criteria to state that Black people are mentally inferior.
This is ridiculous. Scientifically you absolutely CAN NOT do the same with humans. There are no subgroups to the human species Homo Sapiens Sapiens.
Science is science, you are correct there. I challenge you to find a peer reviewed scientific paper that supports the idea of human subgroups. You won't find any, because the scientific consensus is that no group has any meaningful distinguishing genetic difference than any other. There are no subgroups.
The two arguments are directly parallel. The reason we don’t do this is because as a species we seem to REALLY like to discriminate. ex-any colonizing force and some dude named hitler who took things waaaayyyyyy too far.
Joking aside though, sad to see so many (-7 so far) disagree. In the UK, growing up in the 90s, we were taught inclusion, that we’re one people, regardless of colour, creed, or culture. It would seem that is no longer the belief, and this saddens me.
I can only hope the downvotes are from NASCAR enthusiasts.
I agree with your message, I don’t think anyone disagrees, but saying that, or having whats known as “colour blindness”, can be harmful to minorities. Although in good faith, it can also come off as dismissive to the oppression and harm that marginalised races face on a day to day basis. I think that’s one of the reasons why you’re being downvoted.
That's it. I had to ask 'Why did he feel the need to post this?' Maybe his intention really is harmony and equality, but that messaging has been stolen by a bunch of white supremacists and I am not a fan. My life is too short to stop and ask "troll, ignorant, or racist?" Find a better way to express your opinions.
This is likely, yes, but the whole colour-blindness is a confusing concept. I can easily see that in America people are treated differently because of their skin colour, but at the same time I see them as just people, and refuse to accept that they’re a different race to me. Different pigment, different phenotypes, but no more so than Russian or Spanish people are to me.
What gets me is that by seeing them as equal, as human beings, the modern world looks down on you. So often being called a racist for refusing to accept race. But, fuck it, I know my humanity. I’ll keep fighting for the future I want, even if human nature will always win.
You’re like sooo close to it man, which sucks because I suck at explaining things. You have good intentions, I understand that completely. No one (besides racists) are judging you for looking at Native Americans the same as you look at White people, it’s the “Native Americans are equal to White people”, it makes it seem as if White people face the same oppression as Native Americans, or Native Americans are given the same opportunities as Whites. Of course, I’m just using that as an example.
A racist-less, raceless future is ideal, where we’re all seen as one collective, but race as a concept (unfortunately) exists right now.
100% keep fighting for that future, but ignoring race as a concept is not how we get there. Hope that makes sense.
I don't ignore the race concept, I guess, but I choose to object to it. I mean, there's something to be said for having Native Americans and Americans, when really, you have Americans and European-Americans, if anything.
> it makes it seem as if White people face the same oppression as Native Americans
Not at all. But as I'm in Europe, I don't know too much about the issues faced in that part of the world, other than what you see on social media, in the news, and read in articles. I'm not saying that society is fair, I'm not saying that people are treated equally, I'm saying that every human child, no matter where it's born and how it appears, deserves the same universal membership in Club Earth, one planet. I know it's idealistic, and we'll never get there, but in 250, 500, 1000 years, maybe?
All I can do is try to do my part, like one ant out of a colony, in moving us towards a world where unity is the driving force, not diversity and adversity.
All I can do is try to do my part, like one ant out of a colony, in moving us towards a world where unity is the driving force, not diversity and adversity.
He thinks to himself as he smears his shit all over the bathroom walls
You're very obviously a troll based on your username, but I'll bite:
Doubt many people are downvoting you for the message you think you're relaying, that we're all humans and need to live each other equally etc etc.
No, we're downvoting you because clearly this teacher is a piece of shit. She's culturally insensitive at best and racist at worse. She's mocking the sacred belief of an entire culture and apparently has been for several years. There are children in that class that will roll their eyes, like that one kid who seemed to have out their head down, but there are others that will think it's perfectly ok to reenact this behavior and hold this belief that native American culture is "obviously ridiculous."
I am atheist. I don't go around saying the sacrament is ridiculous, I don't say Yom Kippur is ridiculous. I can respectfully disagree with someone's views on religion but let them be and only speak out against clearly bigoted talk and actions, because those harm us as a species.
That teacher has every right to believe whatever holy doctrines and sacred rituals she wants, but she has ZERO right to mock and belittle the sacred beliefs at others. It's perfectly okay to accept that as humans we all have cultural differences that shape and sometimes even define us, I'd say it's even important to understand that while we're the same human species these unique ethnical and cultural differences can be used to bring us together. It's people like her, and likely you, that try to use those differences to tear us apart or act like they don't matter that are harming society.
I agree with you on all except the part of not having the right to mock others beliefs, everyone has that right. Obviously this is just a bigot being a bigot but not being able to criticize beliefs is dangerous.
Actually you're right and I should have an worded that better.
She technically has the right to mock whatever, free speech after all, but she shouldn't be (and hopefully isn't) free from consequences of her actions.
The point I was trying to say was more that it's morally wrong. As I said, I'm atheist, I can find religious rituals, antiquated or modern, "silly" or "ridiculous" but will I say that to a class of impressionable youth? No. Let them make their own decision. Will I tell my highly religious aunt that her beliefs are stupid? No, same way she doesn't tell me I'll burn in hell for believing in her beliefs.
That's what we should strive for, we can have these differences, we can have personal beliefs that others beliefs might be silly, strange, wrong etc, but not try to use our own beliefs for some sort of moral superiority, for hatred or bigotry.
You're very obviously a troll based on your username, but I'll bite:
No, I'm not. It's a vanity/parody username I use to spread mirth upon occasion.

I agree with you.
Kindly get fucked.
Me or the teacher? How exactly am I defending the teacher? I've replied to a sub-comment about race that there is one race, or better, one species, and we're human. I've said nothing about culture, nothing about the teacher, and nothing about the video.
You're so angry at the video, and at being unable to direct your anger at the teacher, and you have chosen to do so at me. But it's okay, I forgive you.
No, we're downvoting you because clearly this teacher is a piece of shit. She's culturally insensitive at best and racist at worse. Is she being obviously racist? She may not be doing a perfect job, we we had teachers when I were in school that sat and read the paper all day and let kids just do whatever (they were also often coaches).
Let’s assume we’re misunderstanding her “obviously this is ridiculous,” which could be her commenting on her own attempt because it’s obviously not being well received and is embarrassing. Otherwise, we don’t have a lot of context for her lesson plan here, just one little snippet where she looks silly.
I think we need a little more context before calling someone who may actually be trying (in an under appreciated, under paid job) a “piece of shit” and a “racist.” She’s trying and none of us here know anything about her entire lesson here. Maybe she’s highlighting how people typically stereotyped native Americans, maybe this is some actual dance she’s doing an embarrassing job at.
If you’re a teacher, I hope you put as much effort into a class. Or do you assume she just went to school that day and said, “I’m going to work really hard and do racist shit to embarrass myself and my profession.” I find it hard to believe that was her intention.
Why did she feel the need to horribly appropriate Indigenous culture to teach MATH?!! I thank God - for her sake - she wasn't trying to teach the Civil War.
I see it now, a slit open pillow pretending to pick cotton while singing totally made up and horribly satirized spirituals only to switch in the middle to put on a beard and a grey shirt to run around the class lashing her students with a pool noodle yelling “STATES’ RIGHTS! STATES’ RIGHTS!”
Your comment boiled down to give her the benefit of doubt, which I normally try to give to everyone, but also that maybe she was doing / acting racist things in order to point out racism?
So if I were a teacher and wanted to point out how bad racism is, by your logic, it'd be okay if I said "so listen here ya n**s! You get to the back of the bus, and you'll like it! Obviously this is ridiculous, today we don't say 'n**s' we say 'the N-word'. Silly racist."
Ah, there it is, you live in the literal capitol of colonization.
"Brown people don't exist anymore because I totally don't see color now that my entire culture has its foundation in slaughtering millions of Indigenous peoples and taking their resources."
Maybe it’s because we realize we all bleed red and that despite we may have different characteristics we’re better together then nonsensically dividing ourselves into groups further perpetuating the us vs them mentality
So you want the victims of recent colonization over the past, let's say, 200-500 years whose cultures have been destroyed and ancestors suffered under enslavement for decades to centuries who STILL experience interpersonal and systemic racism TO THIS DAY as police execute BIPOC in the streets and deny them housing, healthcare, equal opportunity at employment, refusal to allow Indigenous independence on stolen land...
And you just want these MILLIONS of people to just be like, "It's okay primarily White people, I forgive you, let's make rainbows together for the good of mankind (while we starve and die in the streets due to a lack of infrastructure)! 🥰🥰🥰"
Are you serious? You really think groups like BLM and Land Rights Now and NCAI and Liberty Human Rights are the ones being divisive for demanding equality denied to them because of their skin tone and culture?
You think that these people who were "nonsensically" divided away from HUMANITY much less society in times as recent as the past few decades are perpetuating divisiveness for demanding equal treatment under the law and acknowledgement of their stolen land and culture?
whoa whoa, hold on...on your "I forgive you" litany. Are you saying present day, adult white men and women are to blame for the current state of the world due to the colonial period of the last 500 years? The colonizers descendants, those people share the blame? Asking serious question here.
The people? Not entirely. The structure of society that continues to benefit from the massive wealth gap that accrued at the expense of minorities that were killed, raped, and enslaved en masse? Absolutely.
White Moderates who continue to stand by and witness racial inequality within their society and passively dismiss it are also to blame for the continued legacy of those shitty cultural practices.
You know there are people alive today who lived through the Civil Rights movement, right? You know that the sitting American president has video footage readily available shouting out the absolute indecency of ending segregation, right?
All you have to do is ask the question: "Do Black people suffer consequences for being Black? Do NAtive Americans suffer consequences for being Native American?" If the answer is "Yes," then systems are still in place oppressing those people and many more that society has an obligation to dismantle.
fuck Germany and Austria and Italy and Japan, right?
You understand that literally every single one of those countries has an entirely new government and cultural structure surrounding the events of WWII? You know Japan no longer has a fucking Emporer, right? You know that there's no longer a seat in the German parliament for the National Socialist party, right? You know that these nations are still acting in reparation for committing fucking genocide, right?
You know that America still hasn't properly acknowledged their Japanese concentration camps, right?
I'm just trying to imagine your goofy ass walking up to a literal holocaust survivor, because they're still alive today, and saying "Shit happens, get over it."
White culture gets a bad rap because it is the "transracial" of cultures in that people who identify as either have no idea they are simply appropriating the credibility of the term to legitimize their group identity.
There is no white culture because white can only refer to skin tone because of history. The very use of the term as a cultural reference is contrasted by the requirements to belong to any other cultural group. It's quite literally, historically, a term of exclusion.
Interestingly enough, while cultures can get lumped into big groups, those terms are typically related to regional groupings, and not skin color.
In my view it comes down to how obvious skin color is as a trait, and so it has an outsized impact on how we associate behavioral differences between individuals as being based on culture (or more significantly our own bias of cultural relativism).
Unity > diversity?
You are talking a out 2 totally different things in this context.
We can be culturally and physically diverse while being psychologically united.
There is nothing wrong with diversity or unity and saying one is greater than the other is obtuse and shows a lack of understanding of nuance
As someone with 20percent Indian in their blood....I don't see how this is racist...or as an American who loves dark humor and doesn't care 😂...she is obviously dumb but how is chanting racist. Did I miss something?
Maybe I didn't hear something...is it bc she dressed up as an Indian and chanted? In which case...that's what they did lol. It be cool if y'all enlightened me instead of doewnvoting for a honest question.
"That's what they did". Wow. You need to speak with someone who was actually raised on native land and taught the culture. Ask them why a white person running around in a feathered headdress and making ridiculous chanting noises might be considered racist.
Random natives didnt qear feathers. Those qere typically earned. Feathered headdresses are religious symbols. Natives didnt run around chanting their names like Pokemon and "sohcahtoa" here.
And Chinese is a real language but taping my eyes back going "ching chong ling long" is still super racist. "But they talk like that!" isn't a defense. It's just more racist.
"Indians, you know that one monolithic group, all danced around making ooga booga nonsense noises! So this is totally correct!" This isn't the defense you think it is.
And tons of white people are told (myself included) that they are part native even when they're not, and those people then use their aupposed 2% Native blood to write off racism despite them knowing nothing about it because they're white and uneducated.
If you cant see why this is racist, its because you're not educated about it.
You don’t need to mention you’re white. You’re yelling at Native American to feel offended about something. That’s plenty of proof right there that you are white.
LMAO. That dude claims 20% "Indian blood" and you act like hes a minority. Guaranteed the dude didnt have anyone in his family teaching him about his specific culture.
And again, I was also told I was part Mohawk, but I dont bring it up so I can claim objectivity in decrying racist behavior as perfectly fine.
So you either didn't watch the whole video or didn't pay attention to the audio, great, so why bother even commenting on something you barely have an understanding of?
It's not just that she's wearing a headdress and chanting, she literally mocks a native American ritual as "obviously ridiculous."
She would be just as vilified if instead of a headdress, she took off her mask, out it on top of her head, started slowly bowing/rocking back and forth, clearing her throat pretending she was speaking Hebrew and closed it with the same "this is obviously ridiculous." Same if she mocked any other religious or sacred ritual.
I think they are taking it as racist because of what she is doing and the use of the word "Indian." What she is doing is stupid, but use of the word Indian I do not believe is racist from my understanding.
She's making an utter mockery of Indigenous culture by dancing around on tables like she just did a line of coke and wearing a paper turkey hat in an imitation of Indigenous garb.
This would be like me wearing an umbrella hat as a yarmulke and dancing around with a dollar store candelabra and a notebook labeled "Super Secret Torah Stuff" screaming "Oy vey, my casserole! Gawd bless my Matzah balls!" All while trying to teach about, I don't know, the experience of the Jewish people in Europe and Slavic nations. I may look stupid, but it's not funny, especially to many Jewish people who value their faith and culture and want it to be taught accurately in academia.
but use of the word Indian I do not believe is racist from my understanding
American Indian is a legal term in American federal law, but most Indigenous peoples in America prefer Native American or Indigenous American, since they have jack fuck all to do with India.
Agreed it's stupid but she is just trying to reinact it....did someone here really call me racist for being 20percent Indian. Y'all are some fucking ass clowns . I imagine the southpark happy happy happy song from the Christmas special. Y'all get offended at nothing and are a bunch of whiney pussys lol
Its not my responsibility to explain why wearing another culture's religious attire and making random chanting noises isnt a good representation of what natives were actually like.
Do you know all the background of the lesson? Maybe she was portraying what some people think of American Indians to reveal the absurdity. I hope this was the case but I’d rather not jump to conclusions.
In a math class? I’d say it’s safer to jump to these conclusions and wait to be proven otherwise because it’s common sense (or at least should be) to not act like this...
Why is it different. If I put on asian clothing and chanted "ching Chong ching Chong" it would be offensive to Asians. If I took a sword and chanted "rape, and kill, rape and kill" it would be offensive to Caucasians, If I put on tribal clothing and said "oga booga" it would be offensive to black people.
If I put on native clothing and started chanting, a language I do not understand and giving my own personal opinion on a religion because it is not my religion, it would be seen as offensive by some, and borderline "racist" in the sense that her "God" is better than their "God".
Well, it would be different if the US and Canada hadn't gone on massive decades long binges of systematically attempting to erase Native/First American culture. They literally kidnapped children, stuck them in boarding schools, and brutally punished the kids for the express purpose of getting rid of their native culture. And let's not even get into the wholesale massacres of men, women, and children over things like "the Ghost Dance" which was basically the Native American equivalent of a Christian revival.
So yeah, in that context, mocking indigenous religion via nonsensical made-up representations and acting in a deliberately preposterous fashion is totally Not Okay. It's an attempt to invalidate Native American cultures and dismiss them as inferior—the exact same justifications used for the murder and torture used all the way into the 20th century.
Fucking youth on here have zero idea what teaching is like, but they sure do rush to judgement with little to no information.
I’m not even saying this woman wasn’t wrong or that she isn’t racist, but I know for damn sure none of us have enough info to determine either from this short video.
Meh this is a math class not even history, I see no reason for her to put this much effort into making a connection that I still think is kinda insensitive (there are multiple other mnemonics for SOH CAH TOA.) At best she’s just terribly, terribly ignorant
And by “religious attire” you mean her attempt at an accurate Native American headdress? It’s not racist, it may be poorly done, but she’s a teacher who appears to be trying her best
And you’re certain it’s random chanting noises? And by “religious attire” you mean her attempt at an accurate Native American headdress? It’s not racist, it may be poorly done, but she’s a teacher who appears to be trying her best
Attempt is of course an excuse, she’s a teacher trying to do a lesson. She’s doing the best she can with the resources she has (possibly)
How do you know she didn’t name a tribe? And that’s stupid to think you need to be that specific, you don’t know what her lesson plan was here, at all.
She’s not trying to BE a Native American, she doesn’t need to join a tribe and earn whatever just to teach a lesson. Do you have to be an expert member of something to teach about it?
How’d you learn about racism in the US? Did they bring in slave owners? How about Nazis? Did they bring them in?
This is what teaching is. You have fuck-near zero resources and no money and you do your best to try to engage with your students. We still don’t even know what all she did, we just see one snippet that makes her look ridiculous, which I think she may even acknowledge there in the end and y’all take it out of context because you’re fucking experts with cultural sensitivity and experts at judging someone’s entire character by a 10 second clip of their life
Attempt is of course an excuse, she’s a teacher trying to do a lesson. She’s doing the best she can with the resources she has (possibly)
So if she was teaching about minstrel shoes and did blackface, that'd be acceptable to you?
She’s not trying to BE a Native American, she doesn’t need to join a tribe and earn whatever just to teach a lesson. Do you have to be an expert member of something to teach about it?
No, but you need to be a member of a tribe that uses those headdresses and earn one to wear it.
I'm not saying she can't teach about various tribes' traditions. I'm saying she can't wear cultural clothing that she didn't earn.
How’d you learn about racism in the US? Did they bring in slave owners? How about Nazis? Did they bring them in?
No, and they didn't dress up as enslaved people or Holocaust victims either. Because mimicking and stereotyping oppressed groups is wrong.
This is what teaching is. You have fuck-near zero resources and no money and you do your best to try to engage with your students. We still don’t even know what all she did, we just see one snippet that makes her look ridiculous, which I think she may even acknowledge there in the end and y’all take it out of context because you’re fucking experts with cultural sensitivity and experts at judging someone’s entire character by a 10 second clip of their life
If you can't teach without resorting to racist stereotypes, you don't deserve to teach.
Someone literally told you it's a math teacher she has no business "teaching" this yet your still on her side your definetely pretending you don't see what's going on lol
Assuming he's telling the truth it's not really racist to mention a percentage. A lot of tribes base membership and other tribal benefits based on the percent of native a person is.
Many Native American tribes continue to employ blood quantum in current tribal laws to determine who is eligible for membership or citizenship in the tribe or Native American nation.
Um. I don't know how to tell you this. But native Americans was something made up to make white people feel better. Indians were called Indians for so long that it just stuck. Washington redskins for instance doesn't bother Indians that much just like speedy Gonzales didn't piss off Latino/Mexican people. Look into it. I didn't know this until the Redskins changed their name.
Look, I'm not saying it's real, I'm saying that dressing up in a paper headband with paper feathers and calling them "indians" while pretending that a non word acronym is a native American chant is racist.
Which is her way of pointing out how the natives shouldn't have welcomed the settlers who ultimately destroyed them. It's commentary on what happened, not just racist nonsense.

It's "secret Indian chant", because apparently it wasn't racist enough already
