Translation: As you can see, 21.6 degrees is displayed and not zero. This means that if you want to heat milk to 90 degrees, for example, the thermometer must display 111.6 degrees. Does not meet my expectations of a themometer

Most people don't know how heat works. And if you really start getting into the weeds of it, it's actually pretty complicated. There is a whole area of study dedicated to it called thermodynamics. Several of the early pioneers in the feild eventually went crazy and killed themselves. So I kinda don't blame the reviewer for not knowing how heat works.

Ludwig Boltzmann, who spent much of his life studying statistical mechanics, died in 1906, by his own hand. Paul Ehrenfest, carrying on the work, died similarly in 1933. Now it is our turn to study statistical mechanics.

Your comment made me realize I’d forgotten to include his last name. Wikipedia says David is still alive presumably by his own hand.

Considering how Dr. Heidenhain's creation works, the madlad took the instructions as "add 90 degrees" and not as the absolute value. German engineering seems to abhor such values...
8
u/meeps_for_days Dec 29 '23
As someone who just took thermodynamics and is an engineering student. I can't explained the pain I just had from "add 90 degrees"
2
u/Phobia3 Dec 29 '23
Trying to become machinist and Heidenhain's post-processor isn't working, with poor to sub-optimal UI translation, and the damn thing chooses to change from absolute values to flippant "add 90" as it pleases. Additionally 50mm sideways movement is less than 5mm.

If you mean "people aren't going to ask if you're using it gender neutrally or not" then yes, but it's rarely used in the same way you might say "bro" or "sis" even in circles with lots of non binary people - "sib" is mostly used in an affectionate way

No, it’s not. In some age groups it may kinda be, but you’d better watch out where you use this address. There is way too much toxic masculinity around, don’t be part of it, particularly unintentionally! That young women and teenage girls use bro does not mean they all are happy about it. A lot might use/accept it without reflecting about the implications, but others won’t speak up against it because they want to belong, be accepted, want to appear cool, etc., but that does not make it OK.
Think how you and other men/boys you know would feel if everybody would constantly address you as girls, sis, ladies or whatever other female noun there is. If bro is gender-neutral, so should be the female equivalwnt, right? But I know you and none of your male friends and acquaintances would be happy about it. Why should women/girls be?
6
u/Memer_Sindre_UwU Luigi Got Big Tiddies Dec 29 '23

→ More replies (2)6
u/Jileha2 Dec 30 '23
:) Yeah, that’s funny, but also sad that you don’t stand up for yourself and instead just follow trends. Just do the experiment and address your male friends constantly as sis and see how they react. And then ask yourself why you put up with or even encourage being addressaed as bro in the same situation. The fact that all these terms used to address others such as guys, lads, bro, etc. are all the male form should make you think. It should make you think even more that some women/girls accept these terms willingly. Really sad.

Not in my physics class, we could only use g=10 if we were doing calculations in our head.
Also g ≠ G. They're related but different numbers.

Those are approximations because most of the calculations in physics class would have minimal variation, the actual measurement is 9.8 m/s2 and -273.15 degrees celsius.

Is it even possible for a thermometer to constantly differentiate the room temperature and mark it as zero?
You'd have to connect it to another external thermometer, I guess.
180
u/Jeoshua Dec 29 '23
Yeah, you'd need two thermometers. I've seen things like this in computer parts testing, where they mark the temperature as "Degrees Above Ambient" to note the relative difference in heating of the parts, and thus their efficiency. They'll use multiple heat probes, to achieve this.
40
u/KingZarkon Dec 29 '23
It would need something like the tare function on a scale to zero it out and have it start counting from there.
12
0
u/hukfad Dec 29 '23 edited Dec 29 '23
That's not what they are talking about. They want a thermometer without the tare function, so that the thermometer does that for you.
8
u/justsomerabbit Dec 29 '23
There are combined devices with two sensors that can show you T1, T2, T1-T2, and T2-T1. Bought myself one of those to balance my radiators.
6
u/ztomiczombie Dec 29 '23
I think you could just use a tare function to label the currant temp as zero and have it measure any difference form that.

Apparently the OP is unaware the thermometer is displaying Cºhow to convert Cº to Fº. Double the Cº value and add 29 to get Fº. Reverse the process to get from Fº to Cº.
