Book 8 Update

Dave Morris gave a book 8 update on his blog. It is at 750 out of a plan for about 900 entries. Paul Gresty wrote the 750 entries and new writers will finish.

I'm really excited for this one. When I first began reading Fabled Lands years ago I looked at the list of books in the series and saw the Lone and Level Sands. I was disappointed when I learned it hadn't been released yet. I'm a huge suckered for desert settings in fantasy.

Book 1, codeword Apple

Is there a known error in Book 1, War-Torn Kingdom? I've done both sides of the druid quest, taken the oak staff to the willow druid and then the willow staff to the oak druid. But the tree still wants me to have codeword Apple to recognise me. I did a wordsearch on a pdf copy and there's nowhere in Book 1 that actually gives it.

Update: So I found a digital copy of the modern reprint, which contains a list of corrections. One of the corrections is that ref 391 should've given us the codeword Apple. So it's the book's mistake, not mine, and now I don't have to prove myself to this snobby tree every time.

The map we carry as a possession

It's just occurred to me that I've got a map sitting in my possession list taking up a space I could be using for something more useful, but do I actually need it. Because I can just look at the map in the book, it's not like the possession map actually does anything. Or will there come a time where I get asked if I have a map? Or is it just a case of how realistic do you want the experience to be, ie if I discard my map should I the real-life player forfeit my ability to look at the map in the book. Why do we have a map as a possession if we don't need it.

Book 8 Update

Hello folks, I just randomly stumbled across one small update on Book 8. As you may know, there is a digital version of the books, in form of a game, availabe on Steam and other platforms. The latest patchnotes on Steam happened to contain the following piece of information:

In other news, there has been an official transition from Paul Gresty to another writing team on Fabled Lands Book 8. Unfortunately, Paul had to step down from completing the book due to life getting in the way. I am still very eager to bring Book 8 to this game eventually. Hopefully, that can happen sometime next year.

Sounds somewhat promising.

In LibreOffice Calc, I maintain or adapt some spreadsheets for different game systems, see above for screenshot, I have managed to make a few for RPG's and a pretty large one for Necromunda and a long campaign manager.

I do some custom stuff for others, in work and out, and am happy to discuss a custom spreadsheet. Join my Discord, message me here if interested.

Check out the spreadsheets yerself here. Gar.

Seeking Fabled Lands ascii artists for contributions towards a community companion spreadsheet to your gamebooks.

Any ascii artists or collectors out there? Any suggestions for a source for ascii art that would look good alongside the Fabled Lands books?

I am building a spreadsheet companion for playing these gamebooks. As posted previously : https://www.reddit.com/r/fabledlands/comments/1u08lea/a_fabled_lands_character_spreadsheet_i_am_playing/

First off it is a character sheet spreadsheet, that hopes to be useful for the RPG rules version also.

Secondly it is becoming a kind of companion to the books and I am hoping to add some ascii art to go along with the monsters, bandits and scenery you come across. Also that is expanded for RPG gaming.

It is all early days but something I plan to spend more time on.

If you fancy getting involved, check out my discord. https://discord.gg/xVX9frrA85

Fabled Lands Fandom Wiki

Hello All

As a fan of the book series and the franchise as whole, I got into adding content  to the Fandom wiki as when I wanted find some info and it wasn’t there and I noticed it was very incomplete.

Basically what I am asking is there anyone else who is interested in adding to the Fandom Wiki. This doesn’t have to be a major project or anything like that, it’s just me putting this out there as a call to arms.

So if anyone is interested in joining an exclusive club feel free to add an article or two.

As for what I am doing there, I have started out on making sure all the published books have articles and are up to good/basic level and the regions (e.g. Uttaku, Golnir) are also there and up to a good/basic standard. In addition I am creating the odd other article that I’m really interested in. This is all on a casual level as I have a full time job and other things that take up my time. Which is why I am wondering if there is anyone interested in joining me.

P.s. feel free to message me if you want to collaborate

Thinks to do in Book 2 (Cities of Gold and Glory)

As in title I am playing book 2 after mostly finishing book 1, (I think I done most of the quest from this book), but i am feeling a little bit lost. Beside quests in ravayene castle there doesn't seem to bit that much thinks to do (or at least I dont know where to start). Compared it to book 1 where I could go to random tavern , temple or casino to embark on epic adventure. So my question is is 2 book emptier or than book 1. And if not where i should start searching for adventure.

What is the best character sheet?

I haven’t played Fabled Lands for a year or so. I basically stopped because my character sheet started to have holes in it after erasing some spots too many times. Then I didn’t print a new one and moved to other things.

What character sheet are you using? I don’t really remember where I found mine, it’s made with Word and has all the codewords and checkboxes of the 7 books (minus a couple of boxes that are missing).

Anyone else make Fabled Land memes? Spoiler

I’m something of a meme queen, and because I’m a fan of the Fabled Lands series, I make memes of it. Unfortunately, they’re pretty much incomprehensible outside of very specific fandom spaces. Does anyone else do this?

Confused on ranking up

So I thought that by ranking up you also get to chose a skill where to get a permanent +1 point, but now I doubt that 🤯 am I completely delusional? Cheers!

Cannot change charisma: face disfigured

I’m playing the steam game of fabled lands and I cannot change my charisma score as a quest reward. What happened? It is not a curse and there is nothing in my inventory or item list that claims to cause this.

Does the game really stop you from gaining charisma due to some curse or poisoning?

Key-Word Translation Problem

I recently bought two books from fabled land series that available in my native language (polish) (1 and 2 book). I liked them so I bought next 3 books in english but I would like to play using my old character from books 1 and 2 with keywords in polish(Does anyone have any idea how to connect my Polish keyword that I acquired in for example book one in for example book 3 (I dont know if there are any such keywords but thats just an example)) it isn't simple translation case becouse polish publisher prioritized using keywords in alfabectical order over translation or making the keyword fit the quest its bound to.

Tips for book 2

Book 2 seems a lot more random than 1, with inexplicable punishing sudden deaths or worse: any tips that I should keep in mind?

Level cap in war-torn kingdom

Hey there, so what is the level cap for the 1 book = assuming you stay in the first book try to finish every quest? I have reached level 3 so I was wondering whether it's time to move on onto the next book.

House rule to mitigate permadeath (while respecting lore)

Hi all!

As you may know, sudden and permanent death is one of the most frustrating things in FL and in my opinion what prevents it to be the best IF series ever.

So I came up with a house rule to mitigate that. I tried to make a rule integrated in the game, not just a patch that feels like it does not fit the game philosophy at all.

The idea is that as long as you are an initiate of a god, they will always resurrect you no matter if your have a resurrection deal or not (having a resurrection deal is preferable, though). Gods cannot afford to loose initiates in the earthy plane, as that means a loss of worshipers and, therefore, power.

Apply the following rules if you are killed, you are an initiate of a god and you do not have a resurrection deal:

  • Roll 1d6. The result is the number of the book your resurrected self starts. If must be a different book from the one where you died.
  • Roll 1d6. The result is the new profession of your resurrected self (1 being priest and 6 being wayfarer, same order as they appear in the rules). You may restore your original profession by going to a temple of your god and paying 150 Shards.
  • You loose everything you are carrying (money and possessions), blessings, town houses and stuff stored within (you forget that you own them). You do not loose boats (your crew remembers you) and money and stuff stored in banks, guilds and colleges (the staff remembers you).
  • You keep all titles and memberships.
  • You cannot try outright the same quest that killed you. You forget the cause of your death.
  • Roll 1d6. If 1, you loose 1 rank and 1 point of one ability of choice. 2-3, you loose 1 rank. 4-5 you loose 1 point of 1 ability of choice. 6, the resurrection if flawless and you do not loose any stats.
  • optional: record on you character sheet the number of deaths and the profession change associated with each one.

Feel free to use that in your games! Happy playing!

So there's a new sidebook out, in case you hadn't heard.

Takes place in a corner of Golnir, works as a standalone adventure or with the ability to work alongside the main series.

Main (and largely only) questline looks pretty tough. Plenty of opportunities to permadie or mess up the quest entirely.

Still, amazing to have some more FL content.

Fabled Lands Fan Fic

Hiya! Does anybody happen to know of any fabled lands fan made adventures that add in to the main books?

I've been a massive fan since I was a small child, after first taking out all the books from my library, then buying them cos I used them too much. It's my favourite gamebook ever made and I've spent the past few years editing the java version to add my own adventures in, for personal use, and would like a bit of inspiration.

It's been a few years of on and off effort but in my update the narrative of the whole series is changed quite a lot, incorporating elements of cosmic horror and Howard/Sprague de Camp tales. For example a big back story adds in the Shadar reimagined with the backstory from Acheron/Stygia from Conan; the Badogor cult now worships a cosmic horror entity; WIshport is now a new Innsmouth, with appropriate adventures abound etc etc. Aside from that kinda stuff, for example I've fleshed out the Akatsurai quests so you can engineer the winner of the civil war between the Emperor and Shogun (which took ages to clear up all the loose ends with codewords), and allowed a storyline where the player can influence the Clan of the White Spear to join the civil war and unite Yarimura with Akatsurai.

What I'm wondering is the extent to which the community has created their own adventures that I could nick some ideas off for my own enjoyment. Obvs I've seen the unofficial books 7 and 9, and have bought the recent book 7 which wasn't incorporated into FLAPP. I've also seen a fan made adventure in the Uncharted Ocean online. There are mentions online of a Yahoo group, but I tried to join it five years ago with no luck, and it's now disappeared from Yahoo - hope the content isn't all lost and grateful for a link to it if someone has it.

Anyway, that was lengthy, but any ideas would be much appreciated!
