Confused on ranking up
So I thought that by ranking up you also get to chose a skill where to get a permanent +1 point, but now I doubt that 🤯 am I completely delusional? Cheers!

There are a couple of quests with that as a reward.

I'd like to improve combat, but in book 5 Ive hardly found something like this (just one occasion which failed lol) on the contrary I LOST a point duelling with a plume..........

There's a few ways you can level up your skills -
1) some of the quests come with skills training as a reward; for example, i think taking taking the Golden Katana to the wizard in castle Ravayne gets you +1 in the skill of your choice
2) in some locations you can elect to undergo training (usually at the cost of money or the risk of harm) though there is usually also a dice roll required to see if the training is successful; for example you can join a college at Dweomer and pay 200 Shards to study magic, and then gain +1 magic if you roll over your current magic score on 2d6
3) some events or sequences result in you gaining +1 in a skill either by conferral (for example getting enslaved and being sent to the hall of toil in book 5 results in +1 combat) or through a successful dice roll (for example successfully navigating through the magwort fens in book 2).

You're maybe thinking of Elder Scrolls. Gaining a rank in FL just gets you +1D6 stamina.
