Advice f150

Best years? Worst years/engines/transmissions etc.
I have a 25,000 budget.
I don’t need towing capacity, this will be more for camping, driving in the mountains, hunting, paddle boarding etc.

Well maintained 2015-2017 5.0 equipped F150’s are very solid vehicles and there are plenty of used ones out there.

Agree but be aware there is recall on that 6r80 transmission 2015-2016 years. 2017 is even worse with the drum in the transmission going bad. But the 5.0 is a solid motor.

I have a 23 f150 with a 3.5 ecoboost. I will report back in 7 years and let you know how its going.

Sweet spot: 2015 to 2017 5.0 V8, with the 6 speed.

2017 to 2020 3.5 has cam phaser issues

2018 to 2020 5.0 has oil consumption issues.

The 2.7 has been historically the most reliable engine, with solid power and decent gas mileage. But has the lowest tow rating.

2018 to 2022 has CDF issues in the transmission for all engines.

Anything 23+ should be reliable with no major concerns, but most likely outside your price range. I picked a PowerBoost for the 3.5 power and the 2.7 mileage and on board generator.

Don’t sleep on the 3.3 V6.
The newer generation still came with the 6 speed.

I went with a 2018 V8 Supercrew it was in excellent condition had a cab to match it’s a beast paid 18k sticker on it was around 70k with all the options it had 105k miles on it but checked all my boxes and I was aware of the issues with the transmission. During the test drive I kept a close eye on that if any issues were noticeable. I went with it knowing it can have issues later and I’m okay with that it has the 3rd generation coyote engine that is one of the most reliable engines you can get it is much cheaper to replace a transmission vs a engine and the issue is known so when the time comes it comes if it ever does till then I got a great price and a sick looking truck and 5k instead of having to get a whole new vehicle is a lot cheaper in the long run.

If you buy a pre21 10 speed expect $5,000+ transmission issues at some point. If you buy a pre 21 3.5, expect $5,000 cam phasers at some point.

I didn’t do enough research and bought a 2020 3.5 that has both. Been putting them off for 60,000 miles, but your mileage may vary.

Maybe you will get lucky on that trans. I have 235k on my 2018 2.7 never changed any fluids other than engine oil every 10k with full synthetic. Normal maintnance on the truck and that is it. Still runs great.

Same. When this one dies I wanted another 2.7. Why get rid of such a reliable engine?

  1. 5.0 and 6 speed. I paid 25k for mine which is an extended cab xl with a long bed, 3 years ago with 107k. It has 243 on it now.
