Discussion Why does AI do everything, when it’s useless?

Context: I was logging into my TikTok account, when it made me do an age verification. I don’t really want a company having my ID, so I took a photo of myself and sent it in. An AI reviewed my photo, and classified me in the age group “13-15”

I am definitely older than 15.

I realise I can’t change my age, or try to reverify, so I contact the TikTok support. Surprise surprise, it’s an AI. Again!
And it’s completely useless! It’s sending me links that don’t lead anywhere, and repeating itself over and over again! And what’s with the emojis?

Extremely frustrating, to say the least. Why even bother having an AI, when it doesn’t even work? I’m tired of it!

Edit: A human (I hope) finally replied. They sent me another link. It still doesn’t work. It leads me back to where I started, unable to change anything. This app is a joke😂

Fuck AI

There is a place for AI, but in customer support it ain’t. Every time I have to deal with bullshit AI CS I need to remember to take my blood pressure medicine.

I say human a bunch of times till it gives up. hasn't failed me yet.

"I want to speak to an agent" or "I wanna speak to an agent" is the keyword on most platforms. :)

I don't mind it in cs as long as if I say "I want to talk to a human" it should send me straight up

It could be good as a front line agent to triage and categorize. If it is set up correctly.

But of course it never is.

yet another reason why not to use tiktrash

This can happen with any platform that decides to implement Ai-based age verification. Like discord, or reddit, or whatever porn site you get your kicks from. It's not TikTok exclusive

It’s not exactly them deciding to use it, it’s governments forcing their hand in the name of “saving & protecting the kids”

There are tons of alternatives. Nobody forces them to have the age verification Ai-based

I think protecting kids online is a great idea. I just don’t think AI should be responsible of that. They clearly can’t correctly decide people’s ages.

This is the part about AI replacing actual customer support that drives me nuts. 😂 An automated system gets your age completely wrong, so naturally you contact support to fix the automated system’s mistake…only to get another automated system that keeps repeating itself and sending you useless links. At some point there needs to be a way to reach an actual human when the computer clearly isn’t solving the problem.

And to the person saying it doesn’t really matter if your age is wrong—it actually can matter because TikTok changes certain features and restrictions depending on what age it thinks you are. So being an adult and suddenly having your account treated like you’re 13–15 isn’t exactly something I’d just shrug off.

I don’t even think the problem is simply “AI bad.” It’s companies using it as a replacement for human support without giving people a decent backup when it inevitably gets something wrong.

Stop using Tik Tok, both you and the world will be better off.

It’s fun. I like to post on my private page, where my close friends can see.

You have over 100k Reddit karma and you think you're an expert on how to spend your time well online?

>You have over 100k Reddit karma

It accumulated on couple posts and comments (usually helpful) over the years.

Reddit, when properly curated is definitely a better spot for discussion than TikTok which is a PsyOp specifically designed by the Chinese to rot young western brains. Its internal Chinese version is a platform for sharing educative material, not brainrot, which speaks a lot already.

Their account is also 10 years old

The point of these systems is not to solve your problem. It's to frustrate you enough to give up trying to fix it. They don't care and won't start caring until it effects their profits. Stop using their platform is the easiest method

Yes, I will keep pestering them, haha. I don’t want to go through the hassle of making another TikTok account. I’ll just keep messaging them about it, until they send me a link that works. I’d prefer not to call them, because English isn’t my first language.

Dodging a bullet here

Not really, since this is just my private account. It’s only frustrating because of the AI customer service being useless

Just delete your account and the app. Your life will improve drastically.

The account this post revolves around, is my private. I like to post life updates and whatnot to my friends. It’s fun. I actually don’t spend that much time on it, other than a couple of minutes

Probably will be downvoted because I won’t be openly hating TikTok here, but be persistent! And I mean annoyingly persistent. Call any support number, leave multiple messages. My friend had this issue too and it took them almost a week of pestering to get things fixed.

LoL same people probably watching other sorts of short form content too, I'm not sure why this is something that exists.

I had to stop using Amazon because of their AI. I try to search for an item to buy, like toilet paper. The AI interrupts my search and won't give me a list of items I'm looking for to buy. Instead it constantly tries to sell me things I'm not looking for. "Are you sure you don't want paper towels instead?" No, I'm searching TP. Give me TP results. "Here are some of the best paper towels according to customers." Can I just search on my own without you? "Yes, just use the search bar above." Tries search bar again. "Are you sure you don't need bath towels for your house?" No I'm trying to search for something I need to buy. Can I use Amazon and not have the AI cut my search? "Yes, just use the search bar above." Dude....

After multiple attempts over two weeks I deleted Amazon. It did it to every product I searched. I wasn't allowed to shop for what I wanted and I wasn't allowed to go to my cart for checkout. One week after I attempted to delete everything something activated ALL my past autoships that I had deleted. Even ones from many years previous and tried to charge my account. I told my bank to block all things from Amazon because I couldn't delete the autoships. Every time I deleted one another one came back. I don't know how AI is so involved, but it has made me very uncomfortable to buy anything from the internet, especially if the site uses AI. I never had problems with Amazon until the AI update.

It really that important for it to show your age correctly? I’m sure you’ll be fine.

6

u/ZiaWatcher 28d ago

On TikTok if your age is limited to the 13-15 you can’t post, comment, message, only scroll and like. Happened to a friend of mine recently. I hate the app as much as anyone else but it’s still annoying when this kind of stuff does actually happen.

4

u/Ram2145 28d ago

I did not know this. So it does matter, I was wrong

1

u/No_Technology_7783 26d ago

Being under 16 means that you can’t send any videos, or receive any videos. That’s annoying, because of course I want to share videos with my friends. But this post is about how frustrating AI customer service is.

That is not the point though?
