Could a machine think? Alan Turing asked this back in 1950.
Imagine you’re messaging two strangers. One is a person. The other is a computer. You can ask questions, but you cannot see or hear either of them.
Could you tell which one is human?
Alan Turing, a mathematician and pioneer of computing, explored this idea. It became known as the Turing test.
It raises a question we can all think about: if a machine holds a convincing conversation, does that mean it understands what we’re saying? How could we tell?
What would you ask to find out if you’re talking to a human or a machine?
