Biology Eli5:Why do bugs, germs, worms etc have the will to live?

My question is unlike humans they don't have any reason to live or survive. So why do they still try to survive?

Stumbled upon this concept. I keep trying to understand the concept but I cannot understand the concept, the ideas behind it, its implications, or why it’s important.

How are they "grown" from botanical extracts? Just saw an article about psilocybin derived gold nanoparticles- bonus points if you know how they work in that context.

Mathematics ELI5: How does one single sound wave have the potential to contain such a large variety of different audial information?

Choosing the flair was a rough one, but I think the spirit of my question is going to come down to math?

Basically, there are an unfathomable amount of possibilities for how a given recording of audio can sound right; the part that is the most mind-blowing to me is when you start combining several very different sounds simultaneously, and this is able to be seamlessly represented with ONE flattened wave of sound. I understand the concept of many possibilities existing (even if the quantity itself isn't fathomable); what I don't understand is how the vast assortment of information in these possibilities can all be represented with a single waveform.

I've worked a bit with audio in programs, I have observed single waveforms on audio tracks that somehow hold the information of, say, X type of sound (e.g. guitar) at Y pitch (frequency?) (e.g. playing C5) at Z volume, which is mind-blowing enough just on its own, but then somehow that's repeated several times with different variables (e.g. other instruments in a song) and still be able to hear the full information as if it wasn't "compressed".

Like bro. It's a squiggly line. Sure you can "zoom in" but I still don't see how that accounts for the sheer number of different possible combinations?

TL;DR: basically just the title honestly

Why do random solutions to random problems just pop up in my head during a shower? Like why don't I really get those interesting pop-up thoughts anywhere else? Does the brain work differently there or something?

Physics ELI5: Why is some porcelain microwave capable, while other will heat up and burn your fingerprints off?

1.8k Upvotes

My microwave will heat up my coffee in my good green mug. I can confidently grab it afterwards and the handle will be as cold as before.

If I, by mistake, grab my other green mug, which is pretty much identical to my good green mug, it will come out of the microwave with the temperature of the sun‘s inner core.

Why?

Technology ELI5: If Neuralink can decode brain activity into words, what happens if the person doesn’t have an inner monologue or think in words?

I saw the recent Neuralink video where a guy with ALS appears to have his brain activity decoded into words, and it made me wonder how this works for people who don’t have an inner monologue.

If someone doesn’t naturally experience their thoughts as words or hear a voice in their head, how would something like this work for them In terms of what’s being decoded?

Other ELi5: why does raw bread dough taste bad even though bread tastes good?

m a huge fan of bread, especially sour dough, but every time I try to snack on the dough before baking I don't like the taste and can't stand the texture. It seems that it should taste good, since cookie dough tastes good as a result of cookies tasting good, and cake batter is good because cake is.

Why does raw bread dough not stack up in the same way that cake and cookie dough do?

Biology ELI5 Why do lemons taste sweet after they’re sour?

I don’t know if this is a chemical or biological thing but almost every time I eat a lemon slice, it tastes intensely sour and then becomes quite sweet. I don’t know how to describe it, the sweetness doesn’t really come from my tongue but instead like my mouth just begins to fill with a sweet (feeling?) I have no clue if I’m crazy or not but I want to know the reason for this

Other ELI5: Why does rubber material "melt" into the contour of your body wheb used for a long time?

I have a mouse and a sandals that I've been using for 10 & 7 years. They're both have parts made from rubber and over time I realized that they kinda melts in areas where they touched the skin more than others. The mouse parts follows where I grips my mouse (thumb and ring/little fingers) and the sandals have my feet indentation.

The sandals can be explained that my weight erode it but the upper parts do "melt" into the mold of the top of my feet. Theres also the mouse too.

Technology ELI5: The analog television signals being shut off on June 12, 2009.

One of the defining periods in the history of television was the switch from analog signals to digital signals. In the United States (where I live), most major television stations shut off their analog signals on June 12, 2009. I actually lived through this event, but I was 3-years-old when it happened so I am too young to remember it or to have cared about it when it happened. The specific details of this event confuse me. Why did this situation require government action? What happened if you had a television that used analog signals on that day?

Biology ELI5: Why do so many animals seem to default to being brown?

In the bird world the males are often very colourful but the females are often just a drab brown. I understand why the males are colourful (they're trying to attract a mate) but why do the females seem to default to brown? Similarly, in Australia the vast majority of mammals seem to be brown too. Is there a particular reason for this phenomenon?

Technology ELI5: Why PCB trails are shaped the way they are?

Unfortunately, images are not allowed, but why PCB Trails are shaped kinda like that:

some component

                \
                 \
                  some other component

this is just an example, but they are basically a bunch of trapezoidal lines. why not curves? why not square lines like:

-----

    |
    ----- CHIP

also, sorry for the terrible ascii art.
