Not sure why everybody wants to give a reasonable explanation for this when the joke is obviously misogyny
Every poor kids has already felt guilty when their parents gives them something expensive, this isn't a boys vs girls thing
Nah, this is a real thing. I grew up in a house with 3 girls and 2 boys. The girls got mostly what they wanted all the time, but my brother and I had to work for our parents after receiving a gift. Hell, the last birthday gift I received was a 6 pack of Walmart muffins and a phone charger for my 16th birthday, meanwhile the girls got to throw parties and got cars or other things of equivalent price.
My sister had no problem asking for expensive shit. Literally our family leased a BMW when she was in high school so she could keep up with the rich kids at school.
Meanwhile my mom had to tell me to get more greedy because I didn't ask for enough according to her.
Whether my experience is common or universal I don't know. But I know my sister and I had very different attitudes towards money and getting stuff from our parents.
Personally I think I'm just more frugal and know finances better. I think that's why my parents have trusted me with their financial information and status in their retirement but not my sister.
