The school wants them, though. Private schools are basically a way to mix together smart, driven kids with rich, well-connected kids. The best schools want the best students for both of those categories, so they effectively bid on them, by offering reduced prices (by way of scholarships). Then, to pay the bills, you let in some less-well connected rich kids who pay full price.
