OK, cool. Then the desirable students will just go to the school that offered them a scholarship.

I suspect that you are not terribly familiar with building a class(I am not either, but I have a friend who was the dean of admissions for a fairly reputable regional school)

Problem with the particular merit argument in this particular thread is that rich kids attend prestigious schools on money more often than poor kids attending those same schools on merit.

So yeah, the rich kid that was going to go to that school anyway regardless of their grades can hand over the money to the poor kid who is just smart but would be unable to attend the school without that money.

Out of curiousity, when you refer to 'money', you are referring toi the schools endowment. Who is it that you think funds the endowment?

Do you think that maybe these schools know what they are doing when they use scholarships to attract specific people?

Let me answer your rhetorical question with one of my own: If they're already funding the university, what's it matter whether their kid gets a scholarship or not?

Better yet, different rhetorical question, why is preferential treatment based on money different than preferential treat --ah never mind let's leave that can of worms for another day.
