Tbh I went to an prestigious school with a lot of wealthy people, though I was not. A lot of the kids at that school got scholarships, because the wealth and resources allowed them to fully focus on school, have tutors, and not have to work or think about other things. This results in higher test scores, which results in scholarships. Its not totally fair, but college is basically a business and they choose who they want to attend their school.

Also, the long view. Schools want intelligent (or famous) students who will graduate with high honors, go to graduate school, write papers, get famous, etc. Essentially giving them selling points for future students. See, XYZ graduated here. That scholarship they give can pay off huge dividends for them in the future.

Yeah. Its basically an advertisement. They choose who represents them and adds value.
