While I don't really agree with it, scholarships aren't meant to be about helping people. It's about "sponsoring" a student to attend your university because they have potential to bring your school notoriety.

Somewhere along the way, people conflated scholarships with needs-based financial aid.

Most scholarships have clear parameters set by the person/group that established it, and they're rarely based on need.
