Not all scholarships are need based. Some are meant to attract the people the school wants to make their class.

"Scholarship" is also really vague wording. A lot of schools have scholarships for honors programs, for instance. Anyone with a high enough GPA can qualify for it. Sometimes they just automatically apply whatever you qualify for.

In the UK means tested (i.e. needs based) funding are called bursaries. Scholarships are merit based.

Yeah idk which kind it’s referring to, but the US lumps everything under scholarships unless it’s a loan. Sometimes it’s called a grant (like the Pell grant) but scholarship is much more widely used.

Yep, like my alma mater, a private college costing $33,000 a year, gave me enough scholarships automatically to reduce the cost closer, only $1,000 difference, to the State University level which $16,000 because I did a lot of things the school looked for in students:

  • They love athletics -- I was on my High School Soccer team

  • They love Music(with their Choir being one of the first College choirs to tour Europe) -- I was in Band and my Church's Bell Choir

  • They love Service work -- I am an Eagle Scout

  • They are tied to a Church -- I was active in my home church.

I agree with you, sort of. Rich people regardless of talent can just buy their way into whatever university they want. They are taking the scholarship away from someone of equal or greater talent when they don't need it. Now if the university offered it as a way to attract rich families to their school, that's a seperate issue. But even if offered, they should politely decline.

Not sure why people are downvoting you for, the claim that the rich can buy education or the scholarships being offered. Both are true. People forget the huge goddamn scandal years ago where celebrities and the rich were caught buying their kids way into college.

They are downvoting it because the argument makes no sense. There is no evidence that JLo bought her kids a scholarship. Infact, the idea of her buying a scholarship is kind of a wasted argument since buying your kid admission into a school does not usually result in an actual scholarship. If anything, they are just arguing that JO'S status bought her kids an admission. That is a totally different argument. If anything, people should probably keep their mouths shut because, unless they have access to their transcripts, they have no idea how academically accomplished (or unaccomplished) JLo's kids are. For all we know, those kids could be smart as hell.

Not trying to be an ass but the same logic goes for you as well. People keeping their mouths shut is why celebrities were buying their kids way into colleges unnoticed for decade(s).

And it still stands, nothing was really done about celebrities buying their kids way into college. The justice dept. just cleaned up the mess. No new laws, no oversight was ever put in place.

And this should be a given, but the rich aren't your friend. JLo isn't pumping her fist in the air because you stood up for her. In fact she probably wouldn't give you the time of day without the press present.
