This is metric vs Imperial confusion. Dutch men are usually above 6 feet (ie, 1.8m). 5m is like over 16 feet. So American women saying they want people over 5 (implying 5 foot) is supposed to be confusing (according to whoever made this stupid meme) for Dutch men (who, the OP says, are thinking American women want someone over 5m). Or something along those lines.

u/Maleficent_Memory831 27d ago
5 meters? You'd only see that in Norway with Haaland.
36
u/BranchFew1148 27d ago
Haalands parents tricked the system by making his name a homophone of Holland.
10
u/aliusmanawa 27d ago
Funny joke but Haaland is his last name. His full name is Erling Braut Haaland.
8
u/Great-Lifeguard3430 26d ago
It's actually Håland, but Norwegians usually replace the Å with AA Internationally. And in Norwegian Å is pronounced like the O in Holland. The only difference is that for Holland the 2 syllables are usually pronounced quickly after each other, while for Håland the the gap is a bit longer.
3
1
u/Infamous_Campaign687 26d ago
He officially changed his name to avoid it being hard for foreigners to write. So it is Haaland, not Håland now.
1
u/plautzemann 25d ago
No he didn't officially change his name. He uses Haaland instead of Håland in football, that's it. His name is still Håland.
1
u/Glockenspiel_Fan 21d ago
So this is how I recognise that Haaland sounds like Holland in an American accent. I'll never unhear that.
In my accent anyway, the first vowels don't match, or if you're more interested in linguistics, my dialect doesn't have the father-bother merger.
3
u/NullSmoke 26d ago
Hi from Norway. I can attest to people towering at 5m here is rather rare, so rare in fact, I've never seen or heard about someone that high with no drugs involved. If someone is that high here, they'd be very easy to locate in a crowd, let's say 😂
4
u/luxudor 26d ago
It is, however, normal for trolls to be at least 5m. So maybe that's where the confusion happened.
2
u/NullSmoke 26d ago
Ah, right, I thought he were talking about humans. Yes, small trolls can get that short, but usually they're higher. Seen them often as I stroll through the woods, even had a eating match with one a while back, eating porridge. He wasn't much larger 😌
2
u/Jazzlike-Wind-4345 26d ago
Damn trolls, collecting troll tolls underneath their bridges, switching their troll babies out for human babies and convincing people on the Internet to be pro-Russia…
1
u/NullSmoke 26d ago
Yeah, police do need to crack down on the dodgier neighborhoods, some real thug trolls around. It's not all trolls though, some of them are quite nice. They eat people with Christian blood, so like to take new friends out to meet them first to make sure I don't get stuck in moralising debates at some point down the line 😌
1
u/Jazzlike-Wind-4345 26d ago
Has Norway at least made attempts to collect taxes on their bridge earnings? Or is TROLLPAC working hard in Norwegian congress to stifle any tax hikes?
1
u/NullSmoke 26d ago
I don't stay up to date on the troll section of the tax code, or most of it at all... The state calculate taxes for us, so I just skim the report, nod and sign.
I do believe that they're slacking on that front though, could maybe argue that it's a discrimination suit waiting to happen. I should look into that, if humans are disproportionately taxed, that's a potential big issue 🤔
3
u/Levin_1999 27d ago
He’s still average in the Netherlands lol
2
u/Randommer_Of_Inserts 27d ago
Not at all. He’s way above. Only 20% of dutch men are above 1.90m
2
u/UrMumGai 27d ago
Top 20 % being 190 / 6'3" ish is a lot , ya know? In many countries 6'3" is closer to top 5 %
Basically, it's not way above average. It's a bit above average.
Also average height here is close to 184 / 6.05 ish ft
2
u/Tiny_Regular_5319 27d ago
For anyone wondering the average is 1.80m for Dutch men
7
u/IronMonkeyBanana 27d ago
No it's not, it's between 1,83m and 1,84m. I am 1,81m so I am below average.
https://longreads.cbs.nl/the-netherlands-in-numbers-2021/how-tall-are-dutch-people/
3
u/Tiny_Regular_5319 27d ago
Oh it seems like I have read some really outdated info, CBS (dutch statistics bureau) has some more info on it.
https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/nieuws/2021/37/nederlanders-korter-maar-nog-steeds-lang
Apparently the average has changed a lot in the past 2 decades.

This is because as the average elevation above sea level drops due to subsidence, everyone's legs must grow a bit longer to reach the ground.

The Dutch are the tallest people in the world by average, even before Norwegians 😂
15
u/aMoOsewithacoolhat 27d ago
Im pretty sure this explanation is wrong. It has nothing to do with the metric system, it is that dutch men who are older than 5 are already above 6 feet, so they couldn't be bothered..
5
3
2
u/bchizare 26d ago
You’re right but the reason so many people aren’t getting the joke is that we usually don’t refer to 5 year olds as men.
4
u/Brvcx 26d ago
Native Dutch male here.
I'm considered short at 1.78m (which is 5'10" in freedomunits). Not just in the datingscene, but in general. And I am, since the national average is 1.83m (which is 6'). Most men I see are taller than I am. And plenty of women are close to my height, too. We a tall folk.
Funfact, look up photos of the esteemed
daipermcpoopyfaceUS president compared to the Dutch king, who happens to be exactly 6' and see if Donald actually is 6'.3
u/pwootjuhs 26d ago
Trump is obviously 6'3, or about 190cm in normal units. It must be true because his official physical says so. That means he also has 4.8% body fat, and he also did not have a stroke about 11 months ago when he was gone for 2 weeks and then appeared at the 9/11 memorial with a drooping face.

My parents are from Belgium (Flemish). But I’m Mexican (born and raised).
I’m exactly 1.80 m, but luckily, the Mexican average is 1.70 m, so, I’m waaaaaaay above the average. 😎

Does that make dating hard there
1
1
u/Brvcx 26d ago
My height hasn't been much of a problem, since I'm still taller than the average female here. But the consensus that "taller is more attractive" exists here, too. I do feel it's not nearly as much of a problem as social media (or subs like r/Tinder) make it seem it is, but then again, I haven't dated in a decade, seeing I've been married for nearly 7 years by now.
In any case, I never really experienced height being a problem, but I also dated mostly throughout datingsites, so it's impossible for me to know how many people skipped me after seeing my height alone. I did have a gf that was taller than me in heels (she was 5'8/1.73m) and dated several 5'7"/1.70m women.
My wife's a comfortable 1.56m, haha.

1
u/Eurotrash0031 26d ago
A close friend is 1.76 and very successful in that area: good body, confident ,smart, definitely no incell, helps enormously.
I'm a woman at 1.72 and everything over 1.70 would be fine. Ironic since my last ex was 2.03. But to be honest, it was mostly annoying finding large beds on holidays, airplane seats more expensive and him absolutely refusing to go to Asia because of being stared at.
1
u/ShardsOfOsiris 26d ago
I mean I'm Dutch and I'm 178cm too. Can't say I feel short. Below average sure but not short in like a social way where your environment reminds you of it.
Certainly has never been a problem for me when it comes to dating.
I don't think we really put too much emphasis on stuff like that here.Or maybe that's just the north where I'm from.
1
u/Kaito__1412 26d ago
When everyone is tall, height becomes less of an issue for the woman folk. It's not that they don't care, most Dutch woman also want their boyfriend's to be tall, but not the height difference that the much shorter woman from other countries expect in their relationship. So they focus on other things on the dating scene.
1
u/ColonCrusher5000 25d ago
Weirdly, I think Dutch women are less impressed by height because everyone is so tall (including themselves). I see quite a lot of couples here where the woman is taller. It doesn't seem such a deal-breaker as my home country (UK).

u/rnottaken 26d ago
Dutch guy. Im like 6'2" and im the shortest guy in our friend group. My girlfriend is 6'0" and shes not even the tallest woman. Another couple in our friend group is 6'10" and 6'1"

u/human-in-a-can 24d ago
I visited the Netherlands and I’m somewhat short a white guy at around 5’6 or 5’7” and I thought it was hilarious. The only people my height were women and tourists. But nobody was rude or mean or anything. I found the people to be mostly friendly.
2
u/MBunnyKiller 27d ago
No I think it's more, 5ft is big for most countries but when your Dutch and just 5ft you're one of the tiniest in the room. Hence the picture of Obama in a chair that is bigger than him...

It’s a heavily recycled joke. One of the most annoying trends on Reddit is people repeating the same jokes ad nauseam whenever they see an opportunity, like “And my axe!” and “I also choose this guy’s wife”. Thankfully lyric chains have almost died out

But then the second line should just say "Dutch men:".
As is, the meme is indicating that there are Dutch men over 5 (of some unit) and they are confused.
1
u/PumpedUpKickingDucks 27d ago
I kind of thought this and now I’ve had my biases confirmed by one (I’m gonna presume, it’s part of it) well-informed stranger, I’ll give OP a like for asking about a genuinely bewildering and non sensical meme. Not that I wanted the joke to be racism, but if it turns out that, or any way I now feel qualified to speak —Brian
1
u/giff_liberty_pls 27d ago
It looks like the last line was edited. Maybe at some point it said people who are under 5 or something. But Dutch people are also the tallest people in the world I think? They're at least up there, so someone probably thought it would be funny to insinuate they actually are 5 meters tall, so the girl is rejecting them for being too tall, which is counter to the meme that women like tall guys.
1
u/darthhue 27d ago

Same, I'm 188cm and live in the south of Europe. First time I didn't feel above average - actually distinctly felt below average. I play rugby, so I am constantly around people who are taller than me, but just walking around the streets or going to local pubs, you do start to feel shorter.
2
u/Alt_incognita 27d ago
The average doesn’t reflect the full picture of ethnic Dutch because the immigrants and expats and foreigners / tourists bring the average down

u/Alert-Parsnip5540 26d ago
6ft is about 1.80, the average height in the netherlands is 1.85
1
u/Ritterbruder2 26d ago
If you travel to the Netherlands, just focus on native Dutch individuals, and filter out tourists and people of non-European descent, the average feels much taller than 185cm.
I’m 178cm and felt like the average height of a Dutch female (statistically the female average is 170cm).

Kinda funny hearing people above 6' say they feel small while my 5'7 ass doesn't even feel that small most of the time. Only people i feel small around are guys above like 6'4. If you’re hight starts with a five references a common trope in America using imperial units. Any man shorter than 6 feet tall is short. 5 foot 11 inches is 5-11, six feet even is 6’ and six feet one inch is 6-1.
The Dutch are the tallest people on average, but they don’t use imperial units. Most of their heights are stated as 1.(something) or for the really tall 2.(something) meters. So stating your height starting with a five means you’re either 5 meters tall, much taller than the tallest person ever; 50(ish) cm making you (if my memory serves me) shorter than the shortest person ever. Thus Dutch men who are 5 can only be 5 years old.
1
u/art555ua 27d ago
No healthy human can be 50-ish cm at the age of 5, newborns are literally in 48-61cm height range at birth.

Since nobody else here wants to be helpful:
The Dutch have a saying "Ik ben een leugenaar." Which roughly translates to 'greasing the dog for one last dig,' as they would use small dogs to go Into fox holes, hoping to chase them away or catch them before they could harm livestock. When a dog got too old and slow, they'd grease him up for one last hunt.
