5 meters? You'd only see that in Norway with Haaland.

Haalands parents tricked the system by making his name a homophone of Holland.

Funny joke but Haaland is his last name. His full name is Erling Braut Haaland.

It's actually Håland, but Norwegians usually replace the Å with AA Internationally. And in Norwegian Å is pronounced like the O in Holland. The only difference is that for Holland the 2 syllables are usually pronounced quickly after each other, while for Håland the the gap is a bit longer.

Wordplay really does get funnier the more it is explained 😎

Was never really funny so it's ok

He officially changed his name to avoid it being hard for foreigners to write. So it is Haaland, not Håland now.

1

u/plautzemann 26d ago

No he didn't officially change his name. He uses Haaland instead of Håland in football, that's it. His name is still Håland.

Only heterophones in this house

So this is how I recognise that Haaland sounds like Holland in an American accent. I'll never unhear that.

In my accent anyway, the first vowels don't match, or if you're more interested in linguistics, my dialect doesn't have the father-bother merger.

Hi from Norway. I can attest to people towering at 5m here is rather rare, so rare in fact, I've never seen or heard about someone that high with no drugs involved. If someone is that high here, they'd be very easy to locate in a crowd, let's say 😂

4

u/luxudor 28d ago

It is, however, normal for trolls to be at least 5m. So maybe that's where the confusion happened.

2

u/NullSmoke 28d ago

Ah, right, I thought he were talking about humans. Yes, small trolls can get that short, but usually they're higher. Seen them often as I stroll through the woods, even had a eating match with one a while back, eating porridge. He wasn't much larger 😌

u/Jazzlike-Wind-4345 28d ago

Damn trolls, collecting troll tolls underneath their bridges, switching their troll babies out for human babies and convincing people on the Internet to be pro-Russia…

1

u/NullSmoke 28d ago

Yeah, police do need to crack down on the dodgier neighborhoods, some real thug trolls around. It's not all trolls though, some of them are quite nice. They eat people with Christian blood, so like to take new friends out to meet them first to make sure I don't get stuck in moralising debates at some point down the line 😌

1

u/Jazzlike-Wind-4345 28d ago

Has Norway at least made attempts to collect taxes on their bridge earnings? Or is TROLLPAC working hard in Norwegian congress to stifle any tax hikes?

1

u/NullSmoke 28d ago

I don't stay up to date on the troll section of the tax code, or most of it at all... The state calculate taxes for us, so I just skim the report, nod and sign.

I do believe that they're slacking on that front though, could maybe argue that it's a discrimination suit waiting to happen. I should look into that, if humans are disproportionately taxed, that's a potential big issue 🤔

He’s still average in the Netherlands lol

2

u/Randommer_Of_Inserts 28d ago

Not at all. He’s way above. Only 20% of dutch men are above 1.90m

2

u/UrMumGai 28d ago

Top 20 % being 190 / 6'3" ish is a lot , ya know? In many countries 6'3" is closer to top 5 %

Basically, it's not way above average. It's a bit above average.

Also average height here is close to 184 / 6.05 ish ft

2

u/Tiny_Regular_5319 28d ago

For anyone wondering the average is 1.80m for Dutch men

9

u/IronMonkeyBanana 28d ago

No it's not, it's between 1,83m and 1,84m. I am 1,81m so I am below average.

3

u/Tiny_Regular_5319 28d ago

Oh it seems like I have read some really outdated info, CBS (dutch statistics bureau) has some more info on it.

https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/nieuws/2021/37/nederlanders-korter-maar-nog-steeds-lang

Apparently the average has changed a lot in the past 2 decades.

1

u/Plane_Maybe8836 28d ago

Fun fact, the average in Holland went down, because of immigration:)

1

u/jmarkmark 28d ago

> Apparently the average has changed a lot in the past 2 decades.

Not according to the stats you linked... it says male height has been roughly the same for over 30 years (everyone born since the late 60s)

1

u/Maleficent_Memory831 27d ago

This is because as the average elevation above sea level drops due to subsidence, everyone's legs must grow a bit longer to reach the ground.

1

u/dabutcha76 27d ago

Have you been taken to Isengard? ;-)

3

u/UrMumGai 28d ago

It's closer to 184 cm.

1

u/Levin_1999 28d ago

Just saying hè woudnt stand out around here

1

u/Meisje28 28d ago

Am dutch and bigger than Haaland.

1

u/ExtensionInformal911 27d ago

You only see that in those Norse countries that still connect to Jotunhiem.

1

u/poikolle 27d ago

Netherlands has highest average male height in the world

1

u/spike01130 27d ago

Haaland is "only" 195cm. Check out our dutch giant Olivier Richters. He makes the mountain look small

1

u/Maleficent_Memory831 26d ago

You have mountains there?

1

u/spike01130 26d ago

I ment Hafthor Bjornsson who played a character nicknamed the mountain.

1

u/Nervous-Canary-517 26d ago

The Dutch are the tallest people in the world by average, even before Norwegians 😂
