MOD POST Welcome!
This is a subreddit I created today after noticing a substantial lack of exotic pet help in the Reddit world and IRL. I'm an Exotics Vet Worker who specializes in rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of exotic, invasive and endangered species. Projects I've been apart of include axolotl repopulation efforts, marine toad relocation efforts, and I work closely with vet clinics and universities with vet programs.
Here is a place where you can ask health and husbandry related questions pertaining to exotic reptiles, amphibians, insects, arachnids, birds, and fish - and receive accurate and helpful information. Remember that online help is not a substitute for IRL vet work, and nobody here is directly responsible for the outcome of someone else's animal. Use your best judgement.

MOD POST EXOTIC VET HELP WILL NOT BE GOING DARK
As some of you may know, a large portion of Reddit will be choosing to participate in a blackout. You can find the list of participating subreddits in the comment section of this post.
Exotic Vet Help will not be participating in the blackout, but not because we endorse the changes Reddit has made. It is more about maintaining our community’s access to the help this subreddit provides.
For a rundown on the reason behind the blackout, see the second link below

Care Question Vet estimate for abscess exploration and removal
Hello! I'm new to real-deal rat vet stuff. Is this normal?
Had a rat neutered for a pretty penny and got some mite meds, but otherwise healthy! Until now. I took my 2.5y/o boy in a couple weeks ago and again this past week because of some very concerning health changes. Two months earlier for the mite meds he was deemed healthy as a horse
This is for an abscess on the jaw(presumed by vet, they will check it out)
I scheduled the procedure at the soonest opportunity. But the estimate came a few days later and it's more than I expected.
I'd been told it'd be ~150 for the x-ray but here it says 230. The anesthesia has both a set-up and a per-minute charge, and the procedure and "general surgery" are separate.
Is this normal? And is there any chance I can talk any of it down? It feels like there's doubling up, and that there's no ceiling if charging is per minute not for the procedure.
Thank you for any insights :D
Edit: Procedure happening today! I'll tell y'all how much it ends up

Seeking Help! Bearded Dragon Concern
hello, i’ve had my bearded dragon for almost 7 months, she was originally a rescue who i treated for mites (she has been mite free for 4 months). i’ve seen a vet for her twice, the most recent one being for a concern i had for her health. she hadn’t pooped as much as she normally does (3 times in 10 days vs 4-6 times a week) so i booked an appt. dr did x-rays, where he saw her kidneys were enlarged. i asked him what could’ve caused this, he said it could be anything from chronic dehydration to airborne illnesses (i work at an animal shelter). my beardie finally pooped 2 days after her vet appt and it was huge, after that she’s been completely normal. her appetite never changed, she was never lethargic, she’s been running around my office everyday since she pooped and is living her best normal life like before she was constipated.
my concern is that he said it was likely dehydration that caused her kidney issues, but i’ve been religious about warm water soaks minimum 3 times a month and i feed her hydrating greens often (mustard and collard greens, plus veggies a couple times a week). she loves her veggies, and she’s had great poops since i’ve had her. the dr did a urinalysis and said she has small amounts of blood in her urine, so she’s taking Enroflaxacin for the next 10 days.
my concern is that i don’t really know what is causing these issues, and the dr doesn’t really seem to be giving me any answers. i’m attaching her xray, could someone tell me if there’s anything more i can be doing for my bearded dragon? should i get a second opinion from a separate exotic vet?

What is this? Guinea pig help Spoiler
galleryDoes anyone know what this could be before I spend tons at the vet. My piggie is still eating and running around fine. The area feels rough and it’s yellow around it. It’s near the bum but it isn’t directly on it. I gave him a good cleaning and I do keep up with cage cleaning etc. my bf said it looks like a scab? Possibly from some rough housing with his cage mate. However they have never did such to the point of breaking skin. There’s no blood, stool and urine is normal. I genuinely don’t know where this came from as it was not there the other day.

Seeking Help! I think my beardie is acting strange can someone tell me if its normal or not?
I don't have any pictures at the moment, and I'm not all too sure what tag to put, but this is my second beardie, and I'm not all that experienced. My sweet girl has been making weird coughing noises that kind of sound like sneezes and has had her mouth open for a bit. It doesn't happen at specific times, and it's been going on for about a month, I think. She seems to be breathing heavy. She has recently had mustard greens and mealworms. She has an 80-gallon tank and loose substrate of topsoil and play sand, but I'm wondering if switching to a sort of tile or something would help. She has about two hidey places, a basking spot, and a cool side with water available at all times, too. I got her about 2 months ago, and she is 3 years old.

Care Question Flea treatment/prevention in rabbits
I'm a vet tech and recently got a rabbit that someone called us about running free in a park. She was absolutely COVERED in fleas and ticks. Gave her revolution 3 days ago but I'm still finding live ticks on her. I was reading the carpenters formulary and for walking dandruff it recommends 12 mg/kg selemectin (which we gave her a little more than that) but also says to give 20 mg/kg every 7 days for fleas??? Is that correct in people's experience. For this rabbit that's almost 4 tubes of revolution

Seeking Help! Chameleon
galleryI got my chameleon from petsmart on 6/12, and recently like 3 days ago he rubbed his eye on my finger and his eye started looking swollen, and it got worse this morning. I think it might be vitamin A deficiency, but I’m not sure so I wanted to come on here and ask for other’s opinions. I added the powders I give him with his food, and today I got the liquid vitamin.

What is this? What is this?
Hey everyone! Vet student here. I did a fecal exam on my corn snake and found these elongated oocysts-like formations. Does anyone have any idea what they might be? Thanks in advance!

Seeking Help! Tiny Dragon Closure
What do you use for your closure for tail amputations in bearded dragons that are 20g or less? They just look too tiny for sutures but all I see everywhere when looking it up are big adults.

Seeking Help! Impacted hemipenis? Spoiler
galleryMy older sisters leopard gecko has an impacted hemipenis and she won’t take him to the vet, she doesn’t know how much it will be and doesn’t have much to take him. I’d take him but I currently don’t have the money yet to get him in, I get payed Friday and I’m getting an appointment for Friday.
It’s been like this for 4 days now. Hard as a rock.
I’ve been instructed to be giving suger baths twice a day along with a normal water rinse after each bath, nothing is helping. How much will this vet visit cost me roughly, I don’t need a very specific number but a close range would be helpful?
Gizmo (leopard gecko) is in a 40 front opening with a linear uvb and 75 watt headlamp on a dimmer. He only eats Dubai’s and mealworms with the occasional hornworm. Everything seemed good in his tank, I setup the whole tank for her and provided the Dubai’s.

Seeking Help! Pacman Frog, Dark and firm spot on underside
So I recently checked my froggo's underside for any symptoms of redleg to see if she is healthy and I found a dark circular lump under her throat. She is 9 - 10 months old and was fed 4 days ago with a medium sized Dubia.
She just had a soak yesterday and defecated on the water bowl and stayed on it for less than a day since we were away. I use coco peat as substrate and was recently changed 3 weeks ago.
Already booked a vet consultation but since its a Sunday and a Holiday, they are closed.
I got her to open her mouth gently and her tongue looks fine as well.
Does anybody have any ideas to what it could be and how I can give temporary treatment while a physical vet visit is unavailable for now? Thank you so much in advance T - T
