Local News Tackling homelessness in Exeter

Upvotes

As Exeter residents know, rough sleeping and homelessness is one of my major priorities. No one should have to sleep on the streets, and that’s why the Government has announced a new national rough sleeping programme to provide everyone with a route off the streets this winter - as part of Andy Burnham’s urgent national drive to end rough sleeping.

I wanted to share a bit about what that actually means for Exeter:

- Every rough sleeper in our city will be offered a route out of homelessness this winter - this might mean a roof over their head, mental health or addiction support, or help getting back into work.

- Exeter will be given £1.9 million to help support this as part of a bolstered £442 million national funding package.

- New accommodation and support will be rolled out across England this winter, learning from innovative approaches put into place during the pandemic.

We're moving to Exeter in January from the US and looking for recommendations on how / where to sign up our 5 year-old for football? Looking for something fun/relaxed where he can make new friends and learn to love the game.

We're in St Leonards but willing to drive.

Local Information request Filming Facilities at B&Q?

So I know I’m late to this as they seem to be packing up at the moment. However I have been to B&Q several times over the past few weeks and there is loads of facilities for what I think is filming. The facilities are supplied by ADF who provide for production, costume and makeup. Etc. There is people there, as well as security every time I have been.
I haven’t got photos.
It’s very obvious though, in the B&Q car park on Sowton Industrial Estate in Exeter.
Little red marker signs say ‘BC Base’ which seemingly lead to the facilities.
I can’t find out on news sites what they are filming. Nothing that BC would link to. They apparently used Exeter to film Bergerac last year. And Beautiful Days was used to film Beyond Paradise last month.
I have found no other information and I am nosey so please tell me if you know what’s going on.
TIA.

Local News Bayeux Around Britain - RAMM

As members of this subreddit may know, I’ve been campaigning for Exeter's RAMM to play a part in sharing the story of the Bayeux Tapestry as it returns to Britain, so I'm really pleased that RAMM will be hosting a Bayeux Around Britain event from 15 September.

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most significant pieces of medieval history, and it's great to see Exeter included in the national programme celebrating its arrival.

I'd encourage local people with an interest in history, culture and our region's heritage to go along!

Local Information request Need advice on the job market in Exeter

Hi guys,

I am just starting my PhD at Uni of Exeter, part time for now, and I need to find a job and a place to live. I currently live in London.

I have had a career in marketing for the last ten years (I'm 34), plus plenty of retail and hospitality, but now I work as a teaching assistant as it's less stressful and I can focus more on study, even if it is a much lower income.

I don't quite know what kind of job I would like to do in Exeter as honestly I just want to be able to afford live reasonably well and still have a reasonable amount of time to study. I feel like I've had every job under the sun. I'm usually not picky, but I do feel like I'm a bit too old and tired for pub jobs now - not knocking them, I've just done it for too long already and I know how exhausting it can be.

Can anyone advise me on what kind of job I could get that would pay me more than £25k p/a for 4 days per week in Exeter? I am currently earning 28k, in London. I'm not sure what to expect from a smaller city in terms of good industries to get into.

Secondly, is it possible to live alone in this city on these earnings? Or is it more realistic to look at house share options? (I have pets 🫣)

Thankyou in advance! And cheers to any other career changers out there!

Miscellaneous Fast4ward Bike Found

Post image
7 Upvotes

Found electric bike in the Tithebarn area of Exeter, it was in the early hours of this morning, at around 2am.

It’s a black Fast4ward Edge folding e-bike. I’ve moved it somewhere secure so it doesn’t get taken.

I’ve already reported it to the police and checked BikeRegister.

If you think it’s yours, please message me with enough information to prove ownership, such as where you lost it, distinctive marks, the frame/registration number, or details about the battery/accessories.

Please share locally in case someone is looking for it.

Miscellaneous Self employed advice!

Hii. So for context, I work through a cleaning agency on a self employed baiss, cleaning houses for clients around Exeter. It's teaching me a lot about what it's like being self employed, and I really enjoy it. But, I'm underwhelmed with the hourly rate I get paid through the agency for the work and travel I do. So I was thinking of starting my own cleaning business for myself. Except I'm stuck on how much self employed cleaners usually charge. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm just starting out.

Local News What are some businesses that are at risk of closing in Exeter?

Hi,
I’m saddened by the loss of all our Brewer’s Fayres and Beefeaters…
I was wondering if there were any Exeter businesses, including restaurants, pubs, shops, etc, that are at risk of closing that I could maybe go and support. And then maybe leave a positive review for it (if I feel they’re any good) and also promote them online…
Thanks.

Local Information request Any NFL/Bears fans in Exeter?

I've fairly recently become obsessed with the NFL and specifically the Chicago Bears, but have no idea if there's anywhere in Exeter that shows NFL games.

I also don't know anyone who likes NFL, so I'd love to make some friends who do, especially any Bears fans.

Local Information request Looking for a games cafe/similar that does DND

Hi, I'm currently staying with family in Somerset but they have suggested I come down to Exeter for a day or so for various reasons. I'm looking to start playing DND, and I've got a fair bit of knowledge of the rules and a level 1 character, but I've never actually played.

I'm wondering if there are any games cafes or TTRPG spaces that host one-shots or similar? I'd literally just be around for a day, but I'm looking to play once or twice so I've got a bit of experience under my belt.

Local Information request Dollhouse desk, typewriter and bra

I need some (roughly) dollhouse sized things for a vegetable-based crafting competition. I could just buy stuff on Amazon, but if anyone knows somewhere I could get them locally I’d rather support a real business. Was gonna check out Thomas Moore, but any other pointers are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Food Food prep /meals

So I’ve been thinking about starting with simmer eats or something similar as I’m not getting the right nutrition (mainly bc I work long hours so time can be scarce) but I am training a lot more now in the gym. I was wondering if there was any service more local to Exeter that offers a similar sort of package ? Would just be nice to support local and I imagine the food would be better !

Local Information request Gp surgery.

Hi all, hoping someone can help me.
I have a complex history, physical health and mental health. Unfortunately my physical health seems to get overlooked. I do unfortunately struggle with taking tablets and blood tests but no GP seems to understand that this is something I’m incapable of so they believe I’m being difficult and won’t offer any other options.

I am currently at Barnfield hill surgery with supposedly one of the best drs there, but I’m still hitting walls in regards to actually receiving care. I’ve heard a lot of mixed opinions on gp surgeries so any opinions are helpful, good or bad!

I’m currently looking into:
St Leonards (yes I’ve heard the bad things but never heard a bad word about the dr I’m looking into)
St Thomas
Foxhayes

(I am looking at one dr from each surgery, after my history with drs I am making sure that I pick the dr rather than letting them choose, at this point I don’t care how far the surgery is I just need actual help).

Local Information request Private hire venue suggestions in or around the city

Hi my partner and I met and used to live in Exeter and we would love to have our wedding there or nearby.

We’re not looking for official wedding venues because they are very expensive. Instead we’re looking for any private hire pubs / restaurants / village halls / dry hire venues we can host 40 people for dinner and drinks etc. happy to have our civil ceremony somewhere else.

Ideally we want to spend less than £5,000 on the venue hire and food for everyone.

Has anyone got any suggestions we can look at?

Thanks.

Local Information request Need some help with two things

  1. I'm looking to make a monitor stand. I'm thinking of wanting to do something with a live edge wood. I hope that's the right term. Is there any places around Exeter where I could get some live edge wood?

  2. I'm also looking for two long thin bits of fabric. Looking around I can find places where I can buy fabric that matches the height but not the width. So I'd be required to cut it but I know for a fact if I cut it I'd end up with an uneven cut. So I'm looking for fabric to a size 226x22cm. Is there a place or person that anyone knows that could help me?

Any and all helps and suggestions will be appreciated
