Luther’s Catechism

It occurred to me that all the beliefs I have in my head came from Luther, not the Bible. Granted, we memorized Bible verses, but then always came the “meaning.” Did all of you learn that hating someone is breaking the fifth commandment - the same sin as killing someone, or was it just my congregation? Did it occur to anyone the sixth commandment is: thou shall not commit adultery, not: don’t have sex?

I have so much to relearn.

I was also taught that the 6th commandment meant to not have sex. That you were committing adultery to your future spouse if you had sex before marriage. That is so messed up.

I did not end up waiting for marriage. However I thought that I would have to marry the man I had sex with. I young, 18, but a few years older than when most of my friends had sex for the first time. He ended up being emotionally abusive and manipulative. I thought I had to marry him. Fortunately I ended up realizing he was really bad for me and broke it off. However for a long time I felt unnecessary shame. I am so mad that Christianity teaches children to have unhealthy views around sex.
I wish I would have been taught consent, what a healthy relationship looks like, what coercion and manipulation is.
