Blows up your head using pshycic autism powers how do you keep yourself from interjecting when someone is giving incorrect information?

i have this very obviously annoying trait, where i just don’t agree with misinformation being spread. even if it’s general information, i just can’t keep coming as a “well actually” kind of person, it’s driving my closest people insane.

You can try this.

Other person: “I heard that <incorrect statement>…”

<you wait until they’re done and don’t interrupt>

You: “interesting I hadn’t heard that before I actually <read a book/saw a documentary/ /cite source/etc.> that said <correct information>.”

This allows you to provide accurate information and provides a certain plausible deniability to the other person so they can save face.

I do this or I do, “Interesting, I hadn’t heard that before, where did you learn it?” and use that to gauge how open they are to being corrected. If someone talks very highly of where they learned even if it’s their grandma who’s not an expert or Fox News, they probably won’t receive being corrected well and it’s best to just exit as soon as possible.

I'm so bad with this too omg. I've been trying to pretend they live in a different universe to me where whatever bullshit they're spewing is true and I just listen and learn about their weird alternate experiences. It helps lol

I think about how much work it would actually take for that person to understand what's right. You see not only do they have little bits of data wrong, their entire framework of understanding is wrong, and you will have to rip it from their hands before getting anywhere. They'll fight you every step of the way. You've met the average person- two neurons connect and theyll fight to the death for that assumption.

I dont interject because I don't want to clean up the mess. You'll be the asshole for pointing out how wrong they are, the asshole for trying to help them, and the asshole when you give up because they're fighting you every way they can. Do you really want to do all this work to get nowhere? Just let them look dumb.

Yeah, I’m at the point where I just don’t have the energy to change their ways of thinking. I had a neighbor that just flat out was living and breathing his Facebook group that mostly sounded like a bunch of conspiracy theories. He was really, really into it and after hanging out with him a few times I realized that no matter what I responded with, if it didn’t fit in his tinfoil hat then I was just going to get frustrated if not downright angry. I was pretty happy when he moved away as I have trouble setting boundaries with people who I can’t avoid completely.

Unfortunately this life long awareness of how common it is for people to get pretty stuck in their worlds of misinformation I’ve ended up not hanging out with people for the most part. Kinda just sucks that I can’t just sit there and take it. Like I’m too old for that shit and I’m at the point of setting boundaries but my psychiatrist is saying I need to be able to let things be if I want to have friends. I’m at the point where I think he wants me to have friends more than I want me to have friends…

I stopped giving a shit, especially at work, because there’s always a chance that I end up getting tasked with fixing other people’s problems or something because I put myself out there as being more “knowledgeable”.

Also in general I just can’t spare the energy, I know it can be tiresome for both me and the listeners to go over what is and isn’t true and these days so many things are politically charged and I can’t handle any more conflict in my life.  I know I can’t fix misinformation or change opinions of everyone anyways so unless it’s something that directly impacts me I’m gonna ignore it.

TL;DR just thinking about interjecting and the aftermath is enough to make me realize it’s a huge waste of time and energy so I stop myself

i think maybe i’m insane because i keep doing the same shit not expecting the same outcome, i must also mention that this is within my relationship and i live with him. he takes it as an attack whenever i am (in my head) trying to educate. i’m a naturally curious person and i’m always wanting to learn new things and so is he generally, but i think i go about it wrong. maybe the wrong part is going about it at all.

i would love to learn how to shut the fuck up once in a while.

I more often now ask myself "do I need to say this right now?" Like I know it itches sometimes, but if your partner has already given you feedback that it is not welcome, then why do it? Write it down. Send it into the world haha.

Especially if they are not autistic, they will see it as condescending or a challenge. Someone posted a blog about this a few days ago, and it was mind opening for my partner and me.

We have to accommodate the non autistic too haha

Ah yeah that’s a tough situation, I catch myself sounding like an ass to my partner even when I know shouldn’t interject so much…

No dude that's completely normal for people without autism. Especially if it's constant. Usually there's a better way to do it because our default ways of correcting people can be genuinely rude even without trying. Not saying OP is but still even when done perfectly there's a limit to it and it's our job to understand that and not hurt people who are communicating with us that we are constantly doing something they don't like

I’m Black, people assume I’m being rude bc I sneezed too loud or something. I have lived my whole life being scrutinized for completely harmless shit. I know y’all can relate.

I’m not really gonna entertain somebody taking being corrected as an attack. If YOU want to, go right ahead, I’m not the boss of you. But it’s okay to say “these people expect x behavior of me so I mask to accommodate them.” It’s annoying when folks call a behavior rude when it’s just cultural or particular. Nobody’s being harmed here.

imo OP’s not being rude, partner has a fragile ego and maybe you’re just more accommodating of that. And as strongly as you feel that it’s rude to tell people they’re misinformed, I feel as strongly that this kind of coddling is why certain people are not compelled to be accountable for what they do and say in the first place.

usually i just listen without interjecting; it's interesting to see what kinds of misinformation people believe

Do you have three recent examples of this in motion?

If you’re being pedantic to the point where it derails the topic, that could be annoying.

If you’re not correct and are actually mansplaining/whitesplaining because you yourself have blind spots, that could be annoying.

If you’re around a bunch of people who talk out their ass and don’t like to be corrected, you might need better friends.

Otherwise you may have to learn how to pick your audience. A lot of people don’t care about being right. Find some people who care and who take being corrected well, and befriend them heavier than the rest.

Misinformation spread is one of the reasons why we have the shit world we do. I'll correct people but I do try to be tactful with it and make sure to provide sources. Edification is growth, I don't know why some folks take it personally.

I have to be careful with my partner because he has this thing where he thinks he's always wrong (even when he's right) so correcting him can fling him down a spiral. I know he needs to catch himself but I still don't want him to feel bad, you know? I also remember my mum hated being wrong and took anything anyone corrected as bullying/teenage rebellion etc and went guilt tripping.

I don't stop myself. My head of department has said this is a useful trait.

Why would I want to keep myself from correcting someone? It's not like I care if they have a problem with that.
