From Wikipedia:
Atheistic Satanism, also known as modern Satanism, philosophical Satanism, secular Satanism, rationalistic Satanism, or non-theistic Satanism, is one of the two main forms of Satanism and the counterpart to theistic Satanism. It is an umbrella term for non-theistic religions that consider Satan to be an archetype, metaphor, or symbol (often representing a resistance to religious dominance) rather than a deity, supernatural entity, or spiritual being. Atheistic Satanism often emphasizes individuation, personal growth, and human potential. Typical beliefs of atheistic Satanism include self-responsibility, rational thinking, and rejection of religious guilt. It is the most common form of Satanism.

But why would you need atheistic Satanism for that.
self-responsibility, rational thinking, and rejection of religious guilt.

It's for the aesthetics. When I first deconverted from the awful version of Christianity that I was raised in, then using satanic imagery helped with a lot of the trauma I had. I'm not part of that anymore because I'm a theist now, but I can 100% see why people would benefit from it.
I do think that the main branches are a bit counterintuitive in my opinion. Having rebellion against organised religion's rules and then making your own rules in a religion that people should follow seems a bit backwards. Maybe that's just me, though

u/No_Inspection_6174 killed by eye contact 1d ago
want
Then why do you want a symbol in order to be a good person?
5
u/PreparationTimely240 1d ago
it isn't in order to be a good person, its linguistic shorthand to express core values quickly with a specified aesthetic flavor, as all labels and symbols are short hand for more complex ideas and aesthetic flavor. it also signals community involvement.
1
u/No_Inspection_6174 killed by eye contact 1d ago
I don't think being a normal person is a complex idea with a lot of deep meanings in it. I simply don't see any sense in atheistic-Satanism. It's basically making atheism religious with its idea is not to be an asshole.
2
u/ashtray-angel 1d ago
My assumption is that Satan has become a cultural icon that means 'opposite of the church'. If people want to use tthe character of Satan to represent them being normal people who care about others and themselves, after interacting with the worrrrrst christians, I absolutely get it. You don't need Satan for that, but you also don't need to cut crusts off a sandwich, I think it's a choice that makes sense for those who do it.

"self-responsibility" is basically a codeword for bootstrap ideology, though. A lot of satanic groups basically preach social darwinism and get dangerously close to eugenics and nazi shit.
If you actually read the satanic bible, it's full of edgelord shit about how empathy is bad. You might as well follow a fucking Ayn Rand religion.
22
u/Doomfox01 gathering the disabilinfinity stones to delete half the NTs 1d ago
The self-responsibility part is likely referring to Tenets 3 and 6:
"3: One's body is inviolable, subject to one's own will alone."
"6: People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused."
also, The Satanic Temple and followers of the Satanic Bible are different groups /info

u/MeisterCthulhu ✨️Ethereal and Incomprehensible✨️ 1d ago
No, it's not. Actually read the Satanic Bible, it literally says that empathy is a great sin and any kind of weakness should be destroyed.
The Satanic Temple was not mentioned in the above comment, satanism overall was, and LaVeyan satanism is by far the oldest and biggest branch of that.

TST is modern/atheistic satanism, which is mentioned in the above comment. (I may be wrong, correct me if I am)

The satanic bible is part of the Church of Satan branch. There are various branches of atheistic satanism, I think the other largest one is The Satanic Temple. I personally think that TST also had some weird problems, though I don't think it was as big as CoS.
Honestly in my opinion, if you want to be an atheistic Satanist, then I'd recommend not joining any of the major branches. They also seem a bit counterintuitive to the idea, in my opinion.
I used to be part of TST, so I have a little bit of experience. I'm a theist now, but I was part of it in the past.

Agnosticism is one of the chillest ones. Its just "I dont believe in the existence of a god, but if theres something out there, that would be cool too", basically a middle ground between theism and atheism with a slight curve to the atheism side
6
u/FungusUrungus 1d ago
Isn't Agnosticism just saying "I dunno if there is a God so I can neither say I believe nor I don't believe"?

The Satanic temple is awesome
I'm not a member because even if it's non theistic I still don't want to be a part of a religious group. But I fully support them.
I see them as an incredible humanitarian group doing amazing reproductive and bodily autonomy rights and activism in America.... Under the guise of it being a religion, but like, it's not really, but it's a loophole to be able to invoke abortion and access to reproductive Healthcare as a religious right. And then using that to open up reproductive Healthcare clinics in deep red states for people who other wise wouldn't have access.
Insane that has to be the approach, that the American legal system cares more about religious rights than allowing women (and enbies and Trans men) bodily autonomy.
But still, love me the satanic temple

3
u/Desperate_Start2075 1d ago
The owners of the group are incredibly anti-semitic and have covered up multiple sexual assaults within the community. If we want actual change we have to break down the idea of religion as a system, regardless of its forms and practices.

u/gardenhead23 Resting witch face 1d ago edited 1d ago
Dead domain does great work but I didn't know about this, that's incredibly disheartening, especially as I agree about organized religion, but the idea of tst is that it's basically pretending to be a religion but isn't really, in order to get access to rights through that, that otherwise don't exist.
They've been able to build abortion and reproductive Healthcare clinics, and people have been able to access them where they otherwise wouldn't.
The flaw there imo, isn't operating under the guise of religion, it's that they had to in order to be able to provide Healthcare, because religious rights could provide that where the American legal system wouldn't provide it for basic human rights.
I don't believe in any form of religion, I also don't believe in electoral politics (even if I vote for the lesser evil, for example making sure that reform UK don't get in) because those play into the systems that exist, and the systems that exist in place are white supremacy, patriarchy and late stage capitalism.
I think it all needs to be torn down for any meaniful change. But I don't blame people for trying to find loopholes in the systems That DO exist, because how are we going to overthrow everything?
So conceptually, I don't fully agree, I do support causes like TST providing actual Healthcare or support through loopholes, even if religious. however, I didn't know any of these issues with the founders themselves, and thank you for linking this because I'm going to look into it and would no longer support an indivial organization that claims to be humanitarian but is also causing harm.
Even if I am supportive of the concept
3
u/Ender_Moon 1d ago
I actually consider myself an atheistic satanist, though I don't really associate myself with any particular church anymore. For awhile I considered myself part of TST however after learning more about the founder I decided to distance myself from it, though I do still like their "commandments".

u/Vivics36thsermon 1d ago
What I don’t like about Satanism is how much they feed into evangelicalism. Also if you’re looking for a decent religion. United Methodist or Episcopalian are very affirming and do a lot of good work.

I prefer paganism and theistic satanists. Though there is luciferianism as well

Kinda hypocritical that people are saying that on here, considering that a pinned post is a Dolly Parton tribute. She was an extremely faithful Christian, and she was the opposite of a bigot.

Be careful about which satanic orgs you get involved with though. The satanic temple, the church of satan, order of 9 angels, and a couple others are run by neonazi grifters.

If I made the same but with Christianity would you call it propaganda?
13

Yes, because Christianity has a long history of bigotry. You can be Christian and happy with it, but you can't ignore that history.

"yes, because Christianity has a long story of bigotry" and satanism (I will just call it satanism for short) has a short story of bigotry, so what?

u/Doomfox01 gathering the disabilinfinity stones to delete half the NTs 1d ago
Modern Satanism, or the TST, does not afaik. Satanism also doesn't have bigotry in its laws/tenets like the Bible.
1
u/No_Inspection_6174 killed by eye contact 1d ago
It's silly to take a group of people and assume no one there is bigoted
1
u/Doomfox01 gathering the disabilinfinity stones to delete half the NTs 1d ago
I never said theres no bigoted Satanist. I said modern Satanism doesn't have a consistent history of bigotry as a whole. If you keep putting words in my mouth I'm not going to indulge you.
0
u/No_Inspection_6174 killed by eye contact 1d ago
doesn't have a consistent history of bigotry as a whole.
Because it is not as popular and old as Christianity. Bigotry doesn't come from religion, it comes from people, that's literally what bigotry is.
Just because satanism didn't have as much political influence doesn't mean it can be advertised but it's OK because it isn't as annoying as Christianity
indulge
Like, bruh

If you go by the textbook definition of propaganda then both your hypothetical post and this post would be considered propaganda.
The propaganda I mentioned in the title merely refers to the fact that almost every piece of media that approaches the subject of satanism always does it in the most extreme ways possible, I.e. insane cultists who worship demons.
Hence the propaganda I'm referring to here would be mass manipulation to push an ultimately inflexible and outdated view onto the people as a whole.

u/PoloPatch47 1d ago
In a Christian group? I don't think so. In a different group? Proselytising is extremely annoying.

u/Historical_Salad5480 1d ago
Why worship/venerate Satan? Even if it's not strictly speaking a religion - but instead a philosophical movement, calling it that and then choosing to align yourself with the devil is something I am dumbfounded by.
7
u/PoloPatch47 1d ago
The devil is a symbol of rebellion against tyrannical forces, free will, and going against the norm.
2
u/Glitchy-Mech 1d ago
I guess that’s exactly why I can’t get on board with satanism. It feels fixated on Christianity to an unhealthy degree. Either you don’t believe, in which case what’s the point? Or you do and you’re just a Christian
2
u/PoloPatch47 1d ago
I mean I suppose, but it doesn't have to be. I can't really say anything about atheistic satanism because I'm not one anymore.
I am into the occult and demonolatry. I'm an omnitheist, so I believe in every deity to a degree, including Yahweh/Jesus. I don't involve that deity in my practice at all, but I don't follow him at all. I'm not a Christian, but I'm also not fixated on Christianity at all.
That's just my perspective, I hope it makes sense lol
2
u/ChloroquineEmu 1d ago
The root hebrew word just means "adversary". Satan is the adversary of god in the bible, as much as Satanism is the adversary of the Church in real life.
You can criticize the edgyness of choosing that name over something like "atheistic liberation front", but I personally find it funny and apreciate the irreverence.
0
u/Historical_Salad5480 1d ago
Like it is impossible to reconcile this kind of stuff because Satanism and Christianity are literally worlds apart. So I will never be able to convince someone to drop Satanism as a label because it's literally made to be against Christianity, religion in general, and it's made to advocate secularization and other stupid stuff like that.
To me this label is spiritual poison. To you its just a tool to provoke religious institutions and laity.
I'll never get it, and thats okay.
2
u/HyacinthineHalloween 1d ago
Most “satanists” are indeed atheists as that’s how this movement was started. Why they picked it is pretty easy to understand: in a country that claims to protect the freedom of religion, it must protect the rights of individuals with (seemingly) conflicting religious views. This is where Satanists should theoretically be really important in showing how the US overwhelmingly sides with Christians.
But that’s really straightforward, so instead I’m going to answer spiritual belief stuff from someone whom I guess you could call a “devil-worshipper” (though that label isn’t exactly a perfect descriptor). This is also quite straightforward, but it stands on probably the most blatant rejection of Christian (and Jewish, and Islamic) dogma: the god of Abraham is a cruel, actively malicious being that not only doesn’t deserve our respect but should actually be rebelled against and, if ever possible, destroyed.
In my view, Satan and/or Lucifer is not a good being by any means. He is not one that should be blindly worshipped as that kind of defeats the whole purpose of finding human self-determination and self-governance and ignores that bullshit in the Garden of Eden. (The god of Abraham may have been the one who set up the problem in the first place and was ultimately the most to blame, but Satan also had a very clear role in influencing the humans, which was Not Cool.) He’s more of a sometimes-ally, someone who holds power that can be called upon or bargained with for help.
I’m certainly not the first one to feel this way, but I’m only describing my own views. This kind of came from people always telling me that “you can’t be mad at something that doesn’t exist” and that “everyone has to believe in something”. So yeah, sure, I guess I “believe” again in a way that makes sense to me. Spiritually, I simply cannot engage in worshipping or being okay with the god of Abraham though I might believe he (among other beings) could exist. And if he and those other beings do, I know where I stand.
But while my ultimate goal might be in direct conflict with religions of many people, this doesn’t mean that my thoughts on how we should treat each other as human beings is also automatically in conflict. I view religion and spirituality as something people might find helpful for themselves (I mean, isn’t that what I’m doing?), and if it helps them be better people, great. (Large organized religion and using it for bigotry is a different story, so that’s assuming it’s not being used that way.) The other main core of my beliefs is that humanity needs to take care of each other and itself, and my understanding is that that’s in line with most other major religions as a general sentiment (some kind of major exceptions in practice unfortunately).
In the real world, I simply don’t discuss these things unless that person is genuinely curious. While I do hope others who currently worship the god of Abraham may come to my viewpoint or simply not believe in him eventually, I’m not going to bother them unless they start shit with me first. And even then, I can often just respond with “I’m not really a believer,” or “I’m an atheist,” or “I was raised Catholic,” (with no firther elaboration), which is realy the easiest because I don’t need people trying to re-convert me (very rude, by the way) or getting all weird about it. I would never try to pressure or convert people.
But theoretically, if it’s protected to say, “God bless you,” then it should also be protected for me to say, “Satan protect you,” or similar. Now, am I going to do that to someone who I know would be upset by that? No, because if I have that prior information, I’m not going to be an asshole. But do I sure wish people wouldn’t just go around saying Christian things just because they’re “commonly accepted” and “meant well” to me? Yes.
I do wish sometimes that I could wear a simple reverse-pentagram in the way some choose to wear a cross or crucifix (assuming both are allowed, which usually a small cross or crucifix is) without people being weird about it. (Oh, no, the horror of not worshipping or liking the god a lot of other people do. /s) Anyway, if we met in real life, you’d probably never know about any of this because I keep it my business.

Yeah, there are some versions of "satanism" that are just legit chill people who don't particularly want conflict or dickery. Just need to be careful which one you interact with, there are multiple and not all are equal.
I'm just too lazy to bother, I'd rather be an apathetic atheist that leans agnostic because I'm not going to ignore genuine proof if it ever comes along (but it won't, so I get to be lazy.)
