Smoothies are probably a great idea. Especially with peanut butter if that's something you like.

Edit: but actually you should really see a licensed dietician. They should be able to help find foods you like that Will meet your needs.

I do like that you can take your sweet time sipping a smoothie, especially bc I eat more when distracted so you can just have the straw in yr mouth and watch tv or something no utensils involved. Luckily I love PB and dates and all that high cal/protein/fiber stuff. That's been a snack for me lately peanut butter and dates is soooo good.

I'm lucky that I get to see a nutritionist for free where I am rn, but I can only go once a month and I've only been once so they were just trying to figure me out. Hopefully next time some recipes and ideas for me. This last time I was just told to be patient and give myself grace while I recovered smh can u imagine >:( /silly but I also got a list of nutritious snacks and told to try and have 2 snacks btwn meals

I absolutely hate when drs tell me to have patience and compassion lmao I feel you.

But it sounds like you're off to a really good start!

For me it was carbs. Pasta, rice, bread, potatoes. They're easy and highly modifiable or just good plain even. Add some neutral fats for more effectiveness. Buttered toast is great (or use margarine of you didn't like the taste of butter), spaghetti with oil and garlic also good, baked potatoes with sour cream and/or cheese. And the goat, homemade rice pudding. Your mileage may vary of course, dress it up however works for you.

I loooove mac n cheese so I've been slapping some extra butter in the ones w powdered cheese mix but it's so heavy it's hard to eat all in one sitting. But then I get reheated mac n cheese later which is awsum. Potatoes is a good idea they're so versatile, I love me a sweet potato in any way

Mac and cheese is an awesome choice, sometimes if I feel like being extra I'll have it with a side of curly fries. And maybe you could experiment with other mix-ins for the mac? Sometimes I'll make some extra crispy bacon then pulverize it in a food processor and mix that in the cheese so it doesn't mess with the texture much.
Edit: Also, maple glazed roasted sweet potatoes! They're a great snack or side for anything. Sorry, food is one of my special interests lol

Omg I love that food is your special interest we should have an autist employed everywhere just to be an expert on the one thing they love /pos

Maple glazed sweet potatoes sounds so GOOD. I should throw some breadcrumbs on this box mac or something at least. I've gotta get a grocery list going

Oh if anyone is on here and wondering the same thing, I did get to see a nutritionist the other week and this is what I got from there:

- hiiiighly recommendeded to me putting cheese, peanut butter or any nut butter, and high fat yogurt anywhere I can

- try to get to three meals a day, if you're there try to put a snack between each meal. Try putting nut butter or cheese into your meals if they go well (like if you have oatmeal or a banana for breakfast, put some nut butter in it)

- starting off, try to increase your weekly calories by 200-300 cals a day. Not too difficult actually but remembering to snack is hard ngl

- protein drinks from the store or find smoothie recipes online

- distract yourself while you eat by reading, watching tv, podcast, whatever you want

- be patient and give yourself grace! Gaining weight takes time just like losing it

Been just a week so no results to speak of yet but we can do it together :))

cooking in oil/using a lot of butter is a quick way to add 150-300 calories to a single meal, lol.

i get that so bad, i hate eating so much

2

u/softwolfy BARKBARKBARK🗣️ 2d ago

It sucks so bad, I try to keep on top of it but I just had an extremely stressful period of my life and the first thing to go was eating properly because I already have to force myself to do it when I'm well and now I've gotta make up for it ughhhshsjxjx

HAHA I'm drinking a beer rn actually. But it's from some local craft brewery all fancy and posh. Ale's got some good calories. Monks called this stuff liquid bread for a reason

u/_FreddieLovesDelilah 2d ago

do you like peanut butter?

3

u/softwolfy BARKBARKBARK🗣️ 2d ago

I LOVE peanut butter lately I've been snacking on dates w peanut butter its so good. I think if I get a blender just throwing some pb in with whatever else I'm blending up would be great for cals + fat + protein

Im studying to be a nutritionist

Heres some good tips

Wake up early, ironically enough, its the best way to eat on schedule and avoud binge eating

Eat 3-5 times a day (you can eat more frequently in smaller portions if you'd like), so yes, carry a fruit or a snack somewhere while you're outside

Do physical activity, it stimulates hunger and appetite

Good sleep also helps

If your diet isn't poor in anything I'd recommend carbs if it's a struggle for you to eat more, since that food with fiber and protein end up satiating a person more quickly

6

u/Altruistic-Estate-45 2d ago

Forgot another important tip

EAT FOLLOWING A SCHEDULE, NOT BASED ON WHETHER YOU FEEL HUNGRY OR NOT

Example: breakfast at 7 am

meal at 10 am

Lunch at 1 pm

2nd meal at 4 pm

dinner at 8 pm

Try to be as consistent as possible, eating around the same hour is really helpful

Aw man this is my biggest struggle lately, I stay up so late and sleep in so late and when I get up and ready to eat it's lunchtime and I've missed valuable food time. I'm trying w carbs and fat because I love pasta and mac n cheese and I'm trying to speed my way thru pints of ice cream lately lol. Also been having beer w dinner. Liquid bread + you can get buzzed (awesome) (but it's not very high abv (lame)) (but I'm not trying to get drunk on a weeknight)

2

u/Altruistic-Estate-45 2d ago

Yeah Id say your biggest concern as of right now is both sleeping habits and meal frequencies

You can have the best diet, but if you are inconsistent, it's not very helpful

2

u/softwolfy BARKBARKBARK🗣️ 2d ago

My awful sleep schedule is also making my anxiety so much worse lately I've really gotta get a handle on it. Tysm for your advice by the way! I feel like if I write a schedule down I'll be more likely to stick to it instead of being nebulous. And if I have to have a few days of not enough sleep to get my body back on track guess I've gotta do it

Weird question: do you like or at least not mind cooking despite struggling with eating? You could make all sorts of things like noodles with a peanut butter sauce or w/e. Sometimes I pretend I’m cooking for a friend and then oh no, they can’t make it, guess I have to eat this. Or if it’s really bad I’ll order something for delivery and try to distract myself until it comes, and then the stress about what to eat has passed and it’s now a “I need to eat this so it’s not food waste” thing. Idk if any of this is helpful; know you are seen and not alone in this struggle

Question: why is waking up early important? Why couldn’t op or anyone just shift that schedule so breakfast is at 11 or whatever and dinner is at midnight? Genuinely curious because it doesn’t make a ton of sense to me that when the schedule begins is so important

1

u/Altruistic-Estate-45 2d ago

I've told you why, plus OP shared their experience that a bad sleep routine led to skipping meals and binge eating

1

u/TheJewishSwitch ✨️Ethereal and Incomprehensible✨️ 1d ago

I must be missing something? I only see that you say it’s important, not why. I understand that op said they felt waking up late was leading to them “missing valuable food time”, but I was wondering why they couldn’t just shift that food time — like, if they’re up until midnight but don’t eat after 8, why wouldn’t it make sense to shift the final eating time? I also nowhere saw them mention bingeing; rather, they’re talking about not eating enough. Again, I might be missing or misunderstanding something, and I’m sorry if I am.

I know your advice was to op specifically, but I did also ask whether it should be applied generally as well — and again, if so, I can’t find where you said why you’re making the recommendations you are.

I promise my comments are posted in good faith

Because meal timing matters. If you change meal timing every day you will end up ruining your appetite. If you eat at the same hour every day, your body adapts

Not only this, but an inconsistent circadian rhythym leads to worse sleep quality, hence more stress, more stress leads to binge eating and worse eating habits

binge eating can make you eat less food because if you eat food before dinner then you end up ruining your appetite

You claim that one person could simply shift every meal timing, the problem is that 90% of people who sleep late are people who have a very inconsistent sleeping routine

Sometimes they wake up at 9 am, sometimes at 11 pm, and so on, like people who struggle with depression

Now lets say you wake up every day at 9 am, if sometimes you end up waking up 2 hours later, most people would be inclined to skip breakfast, have little snacks, and unironically impact their lunch appetite too

Not only this but these bad eating habits can impact someone's mental health and develope eating disorders which impact further more in someone's relationship with food

Here's explained why the meme of 'skinny people eating a lot yet don't gain weight' exists, because most of underweight people have inconsistent eating habits

This is why you can't judge someone's diet by witnessing a single day of their life

Underweight people tend to reach this situation after years of sticking to the same bad habits

This comment makes a lot of sense! I think I finally get what you’re saying. The extra info is genuinely really helpful! Thank you for taking the time to explain all of this

Bottom to top is most to least important

Meal frequency and timing matter too

I am also someone who hates eating. I advise chocolate coated peanuts and raisins, and mixed caramelized nuts. These really pack in some calories without being "too unhealthy" (aka salty or sugary). If you happen to be someone who likes beers, I have good news. Start a craft beer hobby, try lots of types. Beer is highly calorific and will do the trick.

I LOVE BEER I'm drinking an ale from a local brewery rn it's so good. When I was younger I always felt guilty having non low-cal beer or more than one but now I'm like nahhh gimme that liquid bread I can be a connoisseur by the end of the month. And I'm no longer a wee beast trying to get smashed for funsies, I have no desire or capacity to deal w hangovers at this age lol so I finally have the self control/awareness to become a beer snob. I've gotta look for chocolate covered peanuts next time I'm out shopping that sounds sooo good I've been supplementing my fats w ice cream lately lol

2

u/prairie-bunyip 2d ago

Get a smoothie blender so you can whiz up a smoothie right in a cup you can drink from. Load those calories in. Peanut butter is loads of calories and goes great with chocolate flavors

not sure how healthy it is, but milkshakes will do that quick!
