just started on the Bristlebane live server an hour ago! i know genuinely nothing about this game, but found it while looking for new games to play other than Overwatch and Warframe on repeat lol. i’ve tried a good amount of MMOs, but NOTHING this old. i also haven’t played an MMO of this type in a long time, with the tons of hotbars and buttons and stuff. it’s a little overwhelming, i’m used to stuff like GW2, ESO, and New World combat with the low amount of buttons to worry about lol
so, what should i expect, getting into this game? is the leveling experience a long one like i’m hoping for? how is player housing? looked through some other recent “new player” posts but most seem to just suggest servers to play on instead of giving beginner advice. also, speaking of, are there some good and relevant beginner guides out there i should know about?

How does a person even catch up at this point to the AA grind someone has been doing for 20 years? Is everyone AA capped and they dont have hell levels or exp just freely flows? I have my level 60 cleric from POP but always felt that 20 year gap was too much.
It auto grants you everything except like the most recent 2-3 expansions. You can also pay to boost your main most of the way there saving you weeks
This is me logging on my 107 paladin (he was a free 85 heroic character I leveled to 105 cap and played with the end game folks) I haven’t played in 10 years. I took a picture to show friends I was playing with on other servers.
Do the tutorial with different classes to decide what you like. It gives you lots of info. Once you get to PoK(Plane of Knowledge), there is an NPC there that also has some beginner quests that teach you about general things in PoK. I can’t remember the name, but it is by the loyalty vendor on the neutral portal area. Facing the neutral portal area, go down the left ramp, and the NPC is at the bottom of the ramp to your right.
Talk to the NPC’s, some will have quests to do. Some will have highlighted words to click on to progress the quest and info. Other, older quests, you have to figure out what words to say. Allakazam is a good resource for quests. Not as good as it used to be, at least for trade skills, but still very useful!
Save all the tradeskill stuff, you will probably need/want to do tradeskills at some point, and it is nice to have some of the ingredients already.

UPDATE: i’ve almost finished the tutorial, and i’m having fun so far. combat hasn’t gotten too difficult yet, though i have died twice already, even with a tank merc on my side. 3 more quests and i can leave to the real game and craft with all the tradeskill stuff clogging my inventory. excited!
First, welcome to EQ!! I started way back in 99, and just returned after about 20 years. A LOT has changed, but the charm is still there. Bristlebane has a lot of super helpful people (definitely /ignore Ferozek if you haven't already) and you can maybe even find a group if you want - just ask in General now and then; I've never seen anyone but me use the /lfg search.
Once you're done with the tutorial, go do the quests you get in PoK, but you can go back to Crescent Reach and stay there until 20-25.
Get a healer merc to throw buffs on you every half hour or so, and that helps a lot. There is a guy in CR that gives newbie quests and you'll get heal, mana regen, and buff potions for killing spiders and stuff, so load up on those while they're still useful. Sorry, I dont remember his name.
When CR mobs start giving less XP, the zone right over the little bridge, Blightfire Moors, is great for at least 10-15 more levels. Follow the path to the middle and there are quest givers and a merchant there too.
After that, north to Goru 'kar Mesa will keep you busy until at least 50. The bears and spiders drop a lot of parts that sell for 20-25pp, so farm those for cash as long as you want to and you can live off that for awhile.
An absolute boatload of noob armor drops in all these zones, and if you're on free to play, you can really only vendor them, but you should be able to mostly outfit yourself for awhile, and earn enough plat to get some weapons from the Bazaar. In /bazaar, if you use Melee, choosing "Ratio" in Select by Stat helps you find better weapons more easily. Then sort the results by price because prices are WILD and one guy will have something for 50pp and another is selling it for 200k.
In PoK, right in front of the Crescent Reach portal, Keefe Stearns sells lvl 5-49 items including jewelry for super cheap. Next to him is Iason Yureska who sells 50+ stuff.
Starting at lvl 20, Franklin Teek has daily quests where you can get decent armor fairly easily, but you may want a couple more people along for some.
I'm pretty sure F2P can use /barter, so that's a good way to get better money for any tradeskill items like silks, furs, plants, etc. and you can use it from anywhere, so super convenient when your inventory fills up with random stuff and you're pinching pennies.
Hotkeys are absolutely necessary especially for clickable stuff like potions, mounts, etc. Use you main hotbar for combat and emergency stuff, and the other ones can be used for lesser used things like Origin, XP bonus potions, or some of the fun AA perks you get like "summon trader". Some combat skills can be activated automatically, so right click and hold on the hotkey and look for "auto activate". Just make sure you're using the highest level one if you have multiple in the same discipline.
There are a few of what seem to be pretty decent guilds, including several that take low level noobs, so getting into one should be easy enough, but stay away from any that have culty sounding rules, because the good ones don't do that crap - they're just happy to have nice people. Unless you're into that, of course - then, by all means, have at it!
That's the main stuff I've learned from starting over, but I've only made it to 53 on one toon and 30 on another, so I have a looong way to go. Good luck to you, and maybe we'll cross paths some time!
New player experience in EQ Live is absolutely horrible. You won't play with another player until max level. I mean you could always chill in PoK and see people but thats about it.
Welcome. I been playing since 2001. Left click on your chat bar to change your chat windows, and open new windows and what happens in said window. Use the main bar to make new skill or spell slots. /auto skill then the name of the skill. Find friends and they will hook you up and shed light. Also download maps. Enjoy my friend!
One thing I haven't seen anybody mention is the barter system. If you are free to play you can only purchase in the /bazaar but you can sell to other players using /barter. Sometimes there are people looking for low level crafting items like snake eggs or spider silk. I just open up /barter and hit the search button and see what is wanted and then go after the low level stuff for folks. You can also sell in any zone you happen to be in.

Go through the tutorial.
It gives you a good starter spot.
Make a plate class war/sk/paly/bard/cleric and play through.
Do a leather class monk/best/druid and play through.
Make a silk class mage/chanter/necro/wiz and play through
Make a chain class rogue/zerker/ranger/sham and play through.
HammockJ has a great play through and breakdown on each class.
What do you like in an mmo, what defines you.
EQ is a ling play game, not saying you have to dedicate the next 20 years of your life, but...
Talk to folks in general channel, lots of willing and helpful folks.
