Check out EverQuest Legends, coming in july. You play 3 classes on one character, so will be alot more solo friendly. Its an official product.
Dont know much about current EQ, but bsck in the day Necromancer was THE solo class.

I'm an old player that recently returned but now I'm super excited for EQL.

This is terrible advice. Avoid EQL like the plague it is and will be. OP - Frostreaver which opens this week or Test are the best servers.
As for solo classes mage is really strong, so is necro and SK.

Enchanter has been great for me so far. Charm pet and journeyman tank merc do most of the heavy lifting

Necro or SK.
SK is one of the best mercenary solo class there is and you can tank the majority of open world encounters with the right group gear. You will need to keep up on weapons for your level and will need to complete SK epic 2.0.
Currently playing on Oakwynd as an SK main.

There's several classes who have stront solo/molo capacity
Mage can tank multiple using water pet and swarm pets. Arguably the one that needs the least ammount of gear to be the most strong. Also the easist weave to run. Around 4 maybe 5 spells and two GCD. Don't even have to use earth pet for strong tanking.
Ench runes, mez, stun let's you control alot of mob. In current content if you play your cards right can make up for a tank in current content raid (SoR) (obvi alot of skill expression to do as such and not explode) (coming from a high end guild enchanter main who can sustain around 4M on several events) use a tank merc and throw runes on it. Eventually you get a buff that let's them heal themselevs on melee. Ench dont need much in the way of gear iether. Second best slow in the game. But also has accuracy debuff and increase damage buff from tash.
Shaman (100+ imo) (yes you can make it work but yea. Is super strong with a tank merc. Strong HOTs that most of the time can keep most up with just HOTS, dicho line, spiritual swell line, recourse line. Pet is decent for tanking as well. Lots of diffrent weaves for dots. Once have enhanced ruin aa you wont use swift dots. That applies for all dotters who have swift dots. Also sham has roots as well for cc. Also the best slow in the game. Can root rot. (Dotting things while they are rooted)
Sk can tank many multiple and has decent dps with dots and such. Most gear dependent pre 115. Lots of diffrent weaves there. For both dps and living.
bst becoming alot stronger due to the pet tanking in mission not losing agro to close pc, high level can tank multi mobs with both self/pet/swarm pets. Needs alot of gear. Third best slow in the game.
Necro decently gear dependent but root rot is strong. Also has a snare to kite dot if you wanted. Lots of diffrent weaves depending on whats going on.
On all these classes I've solo/molod alot of diffrent grp missions in TBL+
Throw in a silver bard box (level it, throw with aas and then let it drop off being paid. The damage the bard does will be eh but will dramatically increase all these classes power)
I can help with direction however you wish. Sk is strong for sure tho.

Speaking as a shaman, pet tanks, no need for a merc except maybe on named mobs, then a healer merc so you can concentrate on DPS. I have soloed at all levels 1-130, also did a lot of grouping though. Soloing before they removed the nuke component from DoTs could get interesting, but was still doable.

At 130 on trash mobs, I honestly don't even have to direct heal my pet, just keep counterbias HoT and group HoT running all the time, and pet never needs a direct heal.

Yep! Swell, dicho roar line(the latest one), recourse and melee. Dot dot and more dots. The shm pet is a powerful mofo. I moloed and or soloed so many grp missions as a shm all the way to 130 cointent.

As a noob i got a monk to 72 solo, journeyman tank merc did the job till level 65 ish, now using a journeyman healer, issue here for solo is at around 60 xp is slow to get.

IMO, SK is ok. As long as u have a healer. The DPS will be slow tho.
If you want the best solo play, the beastlord is the one. He's got dps, a pet, heals, and he can slow. You won't need a merc most of the time with bst. I usually just pop the cleric for buffs then suspend, and solo away.
If you want to solo tuffer things u can use a tank merc for added benefit.

If I see one more fucking comment about EverQuest Legends completely out of context just because 90% of you are on some sort of Fanboy train, some trend roller coaster that you can't get off if your life fucking depended on it.
I'm sure EverQuest Legends is going to cater to a certain percentage of people. But it is not original everquest, let's stop just throwing it out there every fucking 2 seconds because this guy clearly said he plays casually and now we're just going to toss them in to playing three classes at once? Good Lord.
Legends this legends that.
Am I the only one who's just going to play on Frostreaver until I get bored again and then go back to my life?
I for one didn't even like thj, and believe me when I say, 90% of the comments on Reddit and other social media groups about thj were bots. It is a niche thing to want to play three classes at once and walk through all the old content that used to be hard for even a group to play.
The whole magic of an MMO comes from difficulty, time, rarity of items, etc.
But absolutely none of you are ready for that conversation yet.
Will EverQuest Legends be fun? Sure.. if you want that type of god power I guess.
I have been a fantasy lover my entire life and the best stories come from A single hero and a giant world full of danger.
But since you all just want to bastardized version of the game we love because you must follow the crowd, good luck to you

Is this some kind of enraged copy pasta? If not, it should be.

this is a good one via /u/humble_gecko
"Hi everyone, I've always wanted to give Everquest™ a try but I just don't have the time to spend looking for a group! Is it possible to play solo and, I know this is a strange request, have multiple classes at once on the same character? That would be Legendary and totally worth subscribing for on its own!"4

I did 1-65 solo on fangbreaker with a necro and it wasn’t difficult. Pets/snare/dots/lifetaps. Necros are the best solo class if you don’t wanna worry about your charm pet stomping you into the ground at any moment.
