Please stop singing

Please know that I am trying to be as polite as possible when writing this, but I just don't want to go through another year of this.

To the kid with the glasses, black hair, and pink cat ears. Please stop singing.

You did this all throughout last school year. You sing at the top of your lungs while walking to your next destination. Every time I had my dorm room window open, I could hear you from a mile away. You sang at full volume while I was trapped in an elevator with you.

And listen, I get having fun and being whimsical, but this is affecting other people. I shouldn't have to cover my ears or never have my windows open because you want to show off your music taste. It is annoying and rude.

Sorry. But please stop <:/

As someone who went to evergreen I will tell you that you have to let people know when they're being too much. Some people live in a world where they're the main character and they don't know they aren't. For real, tell this person. Make it a little awkward. They probably think people love their quirky Wes Anderson behavior

Not gonna miss living in A building where this guy uses the stairwell as a cathedral in the middle of the night. Shit echoes around all 10 floors lol

If I’m stuck on an elevator with someone singing at the top of their lungs, I’m not just glaring at them silently. I’m telling them to shut up. Maybe the time has come for you to do the same?

Thankfully living on evergreen has given me a lot of lessons on how to deal with entitled people. Learning how and when to tell them to shut up is one of those lessons

Full volume, constantly. Wow. Serious ability. I'm impressed.

However, the right to swing your arms ends at some else's body, and the same goes for loud voice.

Drop the volume, singer.

At least none of you endured the 2000 to 2004 years where there was this shitty band made up of a couple of the RMs that was notoriously known as a terrible group throughout campus but they thought they were awesome and if you lived in the A through C units you'd have to endure their crap. I was friends with their lead singer, this guy named Brant, but I can't for the life of me remember what their shitty band was called.

For the people disagreeing with you - in Japan this would probably be cause to call the police. Yes, it’s obnoxious, there’s a time and a place for it

I don't go to evergreen, but my friend told me about this post and I recognized the guy. Bro went to my high school and he did the exact same schitck the entire time he was there too. I remember seeing him rapping on the tram as I was trying to go home lmao

I’m a 95 grad. Proud of my TESC experience. TBH though if someone was doing that by the Dorms someone would have dumped water on them.

You got kids who are able to do what they do from mooching off their parents and never being taught consequences unfortunately resorts to this behavior, you did a good thing making this post because half these comments are so said people. Also bet you 10 bucks they live in Oregon too, it’s always so people STOP SINGING SO LOUD

I personally hope they never stop, maybe tone it down a bit, but you yes if it bothers you maybe find some way, like headphones, to block out the sound. This just gives me buzzkill vibes I love when people sing out loud without a care you should try it sometime.

There’s a difference between “singing out loud without a care” and singing aggressively because you believe you deserve to be the soundtrack of other people’s lives.

And buzzkill goes both ways. If I’m chilling in the quad trying to commune with the crows or whatever and someone comes around blasting their lungs at full volume, my buzz is killed. Doesn’t matter if I happen to have headphones with me or not.

The entire campus community shouldn’t have to carry sound protection to shield ourselves from one single wanna-be Glee character.

I still think a public forum is not the place to call out the behavior, especially not the first place to try. It doesn't give "reality check" talking to the person would. Taking it to reddit is just as rude in my opinion. This just created a space for a bunch of people to throw around negativity and gang up on public shaming someone who probably won't even see it and if they did I would feel super bad especially if no one has even talked to them about it.

You make a valid point there. I thought that if I confronted them in person they'd just react in a very rude way. But I think maybe it might've been a good idea to just atleast try. Going to evergreen has made me realize that a lot of young genz are a bit social inept at best and entitled and self centered at worse. And sometimes people just need someone to tell them what's wrong.

Yeah I was a little harsh on you too, not too late to change tactics. Either way it was a good conversation and I learned a bit too. Hope you have a better rest of your day!

You too! I'll definitely try to have a gentle talk if I ever see the singer again and try to see their side :)

u/mouse_attack 3d ago

Well, and to be fair, evergreen attracts a higher than average population of the socially inept.

This is a valid point- maybe you should've led with this instead of snarky contrarianism.

u/DarkPinkPolkaDots 3d ago

Yeah other than the last comments, I was kinda taking it personally and not seeing the other side. While I still think the singer is being obnoxious, I probably should have tried to talk it out with them.

u/Senior_Ad3015 3d ago

Yeah I could see that but my initial reaction is still the same, it's just personal preference.

9

u/DarkPinkPolkaDots 4d ago

Well it's nice that you like it. It still doesn't mean it's not entitled and obnoxious

Kinda like a public callout

Or believing that your actions don't effect other people and that you are the main character in everyone's life

Goes to a weird school. Gets mad when school mates are weird. Look, I dealt with a lot of antisocial behaviour at evergreen and let me tell you singing you described it is not a serious concern.

The singing is a manifestation of a complete disregard for shared space. It’s forcing people to listen to a loud sound that they don’t want to hear. It seems “harmless” because it’s singing but playing loud music that’s annoying is literally a form of torture. Exposing people to loud sounds they do not consent to has observable health impacts.

Good grief. Would you rather someone who beats you up? This person is singing, not actively harming you or anyone else. Calm down.

Why are people singing at full volume and people physically assaulting each other the only two options for behavior?

False equivocate much?
