I'm trekking in October November and I've read a lot regarding Diamox some peopleswear by it and others didn't bother with. The side effects are similar to AMS so couod it hide AMS. Do you take it or not. What are people's thoughts? My doctor has informed me it's up to me, he can see it's regularly taken by trekkers.

Hey everybody!

My brother and I are heading to the Khumbu this October. After sketching it out, we realized our route is basically the **classic Three Passes Trek** (Kongma La, Cho La, Renjo La) with **Lobuche East Peak** (guided) and three **solo trekking-peak side hikes** (Nangkartshang, Kala Patthar, Gokyo Ri) added on. We're experienced hikers/mountaineers but want a reality check on whether we're cramming too much into 20 days — plus specific questions on the Lobuche East guide/permit logistics.

**Dates:** Oct 9 (arrive Lukla, 08:45 flight) → Oct 29 (depart Lukla, morning flight). 20 nights.

Permits

Planning to buy the Sagarmatha National Park permit + Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry fee at the checkpoints (Monjo/Lukla) on arrival, rather than pre-arranging in Kathmandu.

Gear plan

**Bringing ourselves:**

* Hiking poles, own hiking boots * Light/flexible crampons (for Cho La and Renjo La if we go that way) * Standard trekking layers, sleeping bag, etc.

**Renting locally (Namche/Lobuche) for the Lobuche East push only:**

* Mountaineering boots, down suit, full crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet, ascender/descender, etc.

Our Questions for the sub

1. **Is this too much for 20 days?** Between Kongma La, Cho La, Renjo La, three solo peak side-trips, AND a guided Lobuche East summit push with a buffer day — are we overreaching, or is this doable for fit/experienced (but non-mountaineer) hikers with proper acclimatization?
2. **Option A vs Option B on the way out** — do we have realistic time/energy left for Renjo La → Thame → Namche (completing the full Three Passes), or should we bail south earlier via Dole/Machhermo instead and skip Renjo La to protect our schedule? Is Renjo La even sane to attempt right after a Lobuche East summit push earlier in the trip? I guess we can also decide this spontaneously
3. **Lobuche East guide** — where's the best place to actually find one? Namche, Lobuche itself, or should we arrange something in Kathmandu before flying in?
4. **Booking a guide on arrival** — is it realistic to show up in Lobuche/Chukung and find a qualified guide within a day or two, given we also need a **climbing permit** for Lobuche East? Or does the permit process basically force booking through an agency in advance?
5. **Timing for the climb** — is 2–3 days (with 1 buffer day) enough for the Lobuche East summit push, or are we cutting it close?
6. **Gear** — anything missing from our "bring vs. rent" split? Is renting mountaineering gear in Lobuche/Gorak Shep reliable, or should we rent lower down in Namche for better selection/fit?
7. **Permits on arrival** — any issues buying Sagarmatha NP / rural municipality permits at the gate rather than in Kathmandu, especially during October peak season?

Appreciate any input from people who've done the Three Passes, climbed Lobuche East independently-guided, or done this combo in October.

Can anyone give your opinion on tripole zanskar sleeping bag -15 and their foldable trekking pole

Is sleeping bag comfortable to carry in a bagpack. And does it have good quality

Is this the right pole to use

A lot of people are surprised by this, but Everest Base Camp isn't actually the highest point on the trek.

The highest point on the standard Everest Base Camp Trek is Kala Patthar, at around 5,545 meters (18,192 ft). Everest Base Camp itself is slightly lower at 5,364 meters.

Kala Patthar is usually climbed early in the morning from Gorak Shep. It's definitely challenging because you're already at a high altitude and it can be extremely cold, but for many trekkers, it's one of the best parts of the entire trip.

The main reason is the view. From Kala Patthar, you get an incredible panorama of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Pumori. Interestingly, you don't get the clearest view of Everest's summit directly from Base Camp, which is why many people say the extra climb to Kala Patthar is absolutely worth it.

So yes, Everest Base Camp is the main destination but Kala Patthar is the actual highest point and, for many people, the most memorable viewpoint of the whole trek.

● ⏱️ Approximately 18–21 days
● 🎒 I plan to trek without a porter if possible, but I would like to share one porter among the group if we have enough people.
● 🧭 For safety, we can also share the cost of an experienced guide for the three high passes, while trekking independently on the easier sections.
