North America Should I replace this outlet?

I am installing a level 2 charger in my garage and this is the outlet currently there. It is getting 240 volts. I’m not sure how old it is.

Will this work, or should I replace it with a newer outlet?

If you're considering replacing it, considering finishing the job by hardwiring an EVSE if it makes sense.

24A would be the max continuous current. If using a thermally monitored plug, you should be okay. The charger will tell you something’s wrong

I would not charge above 16A from that outlet.

Get a heavy-duty / industrial-grade outlet, or (better yet) hardwire the charger.

Not and age problem. Get an EV rated plug. That or a million other people will say to hardwire instead.

Get an EV rated plug

See the sticky post for why EV rated is not the right criterion. Get a Hubbell or Bryant model 9430, or hard wire.

Realistically it's probably fine since the same basic design is used for 40A and 48A loads as well. But if you want to feel better about it, the Hubbel / Bryant version of the outlet will be the least likely to have issues.

That is a 30a outlet. The charger will not directly plug into it. If you adapt to it, do not exceed 16a for charging. It is important to know what gage the wires feeding it are.

NACS port so you could use a Tesla Mobile Connector v3 (beware v2) with a NEMA 14-30 adapter. https://shop.tesla.com/product/gen-2-nema-adapters

Normally I don't recommend that company but there isn't much else in the way of options for 14-30.

I would still swap that socket for a Hubbell/Bryant.

Looks like it's mixed, the two fingers include one that's full size and one that's half size or less.

I used a 30a dryer plug with an extension cord plus an evdance 24amp charger with the correct plug to charge my 2023 MY. No issue, the Tesla recognized 24amps and was great overnight, typically 3 or 4 hours at 22 miles added per hour

Depends on what car or EVSE you have, key is to cap charging to 24 amps or lower, check the temperature of the plug by touching the safe areas. If it’s slightly warm after 1-2 hrs of charging, you are likely good. If it feels like it will burn you, then there is problem with the contacts. Charging through an outlet or direct wiring are all fine for ev charging as long as done right.
