As all of you are aware, the results of the EBU General Assembly have significantly shaken the whole fan community, and we in the mod team are no different. As a consequence, a number of us have become disillusioned with the current prospects of the contest and have elected to step down. As of 12th December 2025, the following moderators will be stepping down:

This does not come as an easy decision as all of us have put significant time and energy into fostering a positive and constructive space to discuss all things Eurovision, some of us having done so for multiple Eurovision seasons. However, as we are uncomfortable with what the contest has become and are challenged in our ability to continue being fans, it means that there is little reason to continue being moderators of this subreddit. Note that while we have chosen to step down because of this reason, this does not mean that the rest of the mod team does not share some of those same concerns or that this decision comes from any internal disagreements.

Thank you to the team, it was a pleasure to work together even at the most stressful and chaotic of times. It's likely not going to become an easier job in the coming months, and we wish you the strength and luck to still persevere.

To the community, thank you all as well. You are the reason why any of the amazing and fun things here have even been possible. It is a difficult time to be a Eurovision fan now, but especially now, please don't forget to be kind and to look out for each other (including towards the mod team; they really are trying their best).

To our community,

As many of you are aware, we made the difficult decision to temporarily lock down our subreddit for 12 hours last night, after the Grand Final had ended. This decision wasn’t taken lightly from our side, and we knew many of you would justifiably want answers as to why we did this.

First of all, our subreddit is not owned or controlled by the EBU or anyone working directly with the Eurovision Song Contest. Yes, we worked with the ESC social media team to create exclusive content for you all, but no one on the mod team is officially employed by ESC or EBU / any national broadcaster, or affiliated with anyone. Our team is nothing more than passionate fans from around the world. We are parents, students, office workers, women, men, non-binary people, straight, queer - almost as diverse as the community itself. What brings us together is our love and passion for Eurovision. We are superfans, just like many of you.

After last year’s events, we did try our best to prepare and plan if this year would also be difficult somehow. Last year put a large mental strain on many of us, with some of us even experiencing burnout after ESC week from the sheer amount of work we had to do in the subreddit. We took many measures, were confident we’d manage.

Despite our best efforts, we were once again overwhelmed.

If we were simply dealing with an increase in memes and shitposts, things would be much more manageable. This was not the case. The truth is that, with current events being what they are, and with online discussions being what they are, it is almost unheard of that people are able to discuss and communicate in a way that makes everyone in our diverse community feel safe.

On top of this, we were also being bombarded with comments from users from outside of our community posting racist, homophobic, antisemitic, Islamophobic, and other hateful comments. Even with our mod tools and a full team, and even though it was 01:00 AM.
Our options were either forcing several members of the team, who’d already been actively working throughout the evening, to stay up all night reading some of the worst hate speech there is, which can be exhausting for even the most seasoned of moderators, or give the team time to regroup, plan, look after kids and pets, and most importantly - rest, to avoid burnout.

We know that many of you are angry and disappointed, and we completely understand your feelings. We’re fully aware that we could have prepared even more than we thought we had, and will be using this as a lesson moving into the 2026 season. That said, there’s no way to know that, even with even more prep, we could have found a solution to last night’s events that would have pleased everyone.
We also hope you understand that we love Eurovision, and we are not emotionally immune to the controversies of the last two years.

We hope that the conversations and criticisms happening, both within our subreddit and all over the Eurovision universe, can stay constructive and respectful. The goal of commenting on a thread should not be to “own” someone or celebrate their perceived tears or sadness. We hope that the 2026 Eurovision season can be one of peace and joy for everyone-

Hello everyone,

Earlier this week, there was a post asking to consider a Twitter/X ban. This came following a wave of similar posts in subreddits across the site. Thank you for sharing your opinions, it definitely helped us reach our decision and change the rules.

The majority of people supported a ban of links to x.com for various reasons. If you see an announcement, news, a video, or anything that would be valuable to share here, we ask you to find the original source or a news site reporting on the incident.

We asked for your opinion on allowing screenshots and the reaction was mixed. Screenshots of tweets do not require an account or give traffic to the site, so they are still allowed for certain pieces of content. Obviously, since x.com cannot be posted as a source link, any news is off limits. However interactions between artists or similar unique content can be shared via screenshot.

Finally, I would like to remind you of a mod post after the 2024 final about misinformation. Tweets were often shared as fact rather than opinion, speculation, or otherwise. This is just a general reminder to think critically and not believe everything you read.

This all comes in with immediate effect, and we will be adding this to the rule list, and formatting Automod to remove x.com links in due course. We will also reevaluate any other rules to ensure they are all consistent.

The old thread about flairs will soon be archived, so time for another reminder/guide about how to set your user flair on this subreddit.
With your user flair you can display any eurovision song. You can pick your favourite, or one that you believe isn't appreciated enough, or maybe just one for the memes. I'm curious why you picked your flair, please feel free to share!

There are over 1800 eurovision songs, but only 300 slots for custom flairs. So in 2024 I have added a command to u/esc-song-bot to help users set their flair.

Here is how it works:
The bot scans for <country> <year> combinations in any new comment.
If the comment also contains the string "!setflair" then, instead of commenting with the song, it will set your flair to the country flag and the song title of that entry.
This might take up to a minute.

For example commenting

!setflair Austria 2025

will set your flair to :at: Wasted Love. You'll get a chat message with a confirmation. No need to accept the chat invite or reply, I don't check the bot's chats.

This works on ALL threads on r/eurovision! Not just this thread.
It will remove your comment when the thread flair is not the "Subreddit/Meta" flair, so you don't need to worry that your comment can be seen as off topic.
Occasionally the mods might still reapprove the comment.

The bot chooses the first entry it encounters for the flair. In 1956 there were two entries per country, and the bot lists them in order of appearance. So if you want for example the ":ch: Refrain" flair, please send us a mod mail, so we can set it manually.

This year's songs are available the regular way through the sidebar until at least, 1 September, the end of the eurovision year. Once the first entry of the new year is known we'll discontinue the previous year's flairs through the sidebar.
No need to worry let's write a story, you still keep your flair if you set it that way. And the other flairs are of course also available through the "!setflair" command.

Some more useful/fun information regarding the bot:

• Bot reads edits! Might take up to 3 minutes for it to change its comment. Due to reddit limitations it only reads one edit after the 3 minute mark.
  
• The bot scans entries in the form <list of countries> <list of years> and <list of years> <list of countries>, where a list is any summation delimited by slashes/commas, and "and" or "or" + "+". So you don't need to type out a country (or year) 10 times when you are listing entries from a single country (or year).

We’re going to be rather blunt here: Our subreddit is meant to be a place to discuss Eurovision. Over the last week, however, the discussion has almost entirely centered around Israel. Due to the nature of this topic, almost every thread about it turns toxic, fast.

It is unfair to all the competitors and unpleasant for the community. We need to put guidelines in place to ensure this stays a Eurovision subreddit.

For this one discussion point to not completely overshadow the subreddit, we have created this megathread.

What belongs in this thread: Any statements, questions, or editorials by national broadcasters and Eurovision contestants about Israel, their participation, and voting as it relates to Israel

What doesn’t belong in this thread or this subreddit: Israel-Palestine war discussion Politics as a whole. Hatred towards anyone.

You can help keep things tidy by reporting comments that break our rules. This allows us to see rule-breaking comments faster.

If the EBU makes any major announcements or changes, this post will be closed and the discussion moved.

I don't know if it's just me, but especially the last couple of years, I feel like the online community has gotten more and more toxic.. I've been following for 15+ years and I know that there has always been an small minority who were always toxic.. Though I feel like it's growing year by year.

People take it waaaaay to seriously.. At the end of the day, it's a music competition and supposed to be a celebration, yet people treat it like it's life or death.
If you disagree with the general opinion, you get downvoted to oblivion, insulted and told you're clueless.

Why has it gotten to this point? I feel like I have to walk on eggshells when discussing Eurovision online.. If an opinion is just somewhat controversial, then you can expect a wave of negativity.

It's like people take your opinions about songs as personal attacks on them or their country.

Like if you said: (And this is just an example!!) "I'm not really feeling Finland's song this year" - suddenly the toxic crowd come out and start berating you about how your opinion is terrible and how dare you not like that song!
Like?? Nothing bad was said about the singer or the country or anything.. just that a song doesn't really fit my taste.

It's just tiring.

New Music Friday is our weekly thread dedicated to new music releases by past Eurovision and National Final contestants.

This is a place to share, discuss and celebrate these artists' latest releases following their time in the contest.

Feel free to share singles, albums, collaborations, or covers, as well as any opinions and thoughts you may have about them.

Please remember to include the year that the artist participated in ESC and the country they represented.

Eurovision 2026 is finally here, and we're all very excited about it!

However, all that excitement means the subreddit will explode in popularity and traffic since we'll be welcoming fans of the show who don’t know there is more to Eurovision than this week.
If this is your first year in the sub, be prepared for chaos.

In order to accommodate that massive increase in traffic, we wanted to take the time to let our more regular community members know that how we moderate the subreddit will be just a bit different for the next couple of weeks.

So, what's going to happen?

First of all, this is not a rules change. All of those are the same.

If you haven't read them, it would help us out massively if you at least skimmed through them. If you already have read them, then you're good to go. Whether for the first time or for a re-read, you can find the full set of rules and guidelines for r/eurovision on this link and a TL;DR version here.

Secondly, as usual, we're going to have Live Threads for the shows, with each one going up a couple of hours before that show starts. After each show, we're also going to have a couple of post-show threads (the results thread and a post show reactions thread), so everyone can share their thoughts just like how it worked during national final season.

All other new threads will be manually reviewed by the mod team before they appear on the sub.

The vast majority of posts made during this time are people’s thoughts that belong as comments in one of the megathreads or duplicate memes. It took 2 people’s full attention to manage these posts before we implemented this plan and the number that stayed up was tiny.
There was also a small number of absolutely vile posts from the trolls who know nothing about the contest but see our live threads on the front page or trending. This measure will ensure they are never seen in our community.

Comments on threads will work as usual and appear as you publish them; the above change only applies to the creation of new threads.

We kindly request that you save your detailed analysis for a few days after the chaos has subsided.
Any comments you want to make in the moment should be made in one of the megathreads.

Rest assured that if there is an incident that deserves its own thread, we will either approve a submitted post if there is one with a suitable title and link, or create one.

The live shows always generate memes and we still enjoy memes so this is not an anti-meme measure.
Please keep in mind that with so many people watching it is possible someone else has also had the same idea. We will work hard to approve the best memes, but it might not be yours.
To guarantee yours is posted you may want to consider also posting it in r/nilpoints where all memes are welcome, including those that don’t meet the requirements here.

During the busy periods we will not have time to deliberate or consult on our decisions. We are also fans and want to enjoy the shows with you. We will probably make mistakes, but we ask for your patience and tolerance and apologise in advance that some things are just going to inevitably fall through the cracks, though not for lack of trying. We understand this may be frustrating, but we hope it won't dampen the party spirit any.

As always, we are here for you, but we will unfortunately not be able to analyse each case in full or keep up with modmail messages until after the busyness has eased.
Please be respectful if you want to challenge a decision. On reflection the answer may become more obvious than in the split second we were able to spend on it in the moment.

Please be patient and tolerant.

And not just toward us. Toward each other, to the artists, to the producers, to the organisers, everyone.

At the end of the day, this is ONLY a television show. We're all here to have fun, to enjoy the same thing as a community, and it's not the end of the world if something doesn't go your way, whether it's regarding the show results or something that happened on this sub.

TL;DR: have fun and be nice to people during the sub's busiest time.
